USA: Travel, acclimatization, and ball speed

A new study done by Adidas shows that altitude at the World Cup will have an impact of up to five percent on a ball's speed.

That means, according to the study, that a free kick from 20 metres during the final at the Soccer City stadium in high altitude Johannesburg (5700 feet) will reach the goal line five percent faster than it would at the Moses Mabhida stadium in sea level Durban.

For the last two days, the team stayed on a lodge outside Rustenburg that is situated in the middle of a game reserve. Within 50 feet of the restaurant patio you can see warthogs, exotic birds, and the occasional elephant grazing and drinking from a waterhole. Exotic birds wander comfortably in search of scraps. Brazil dumped Italy out of the Confederations Cup after a ruthless display in Pretoria.

The game was dominated by Brazil who hit the woodwork a couple of times before a brace from Luís Fabiano and a Dossena own goal ended the Italian's faint hopes before half-time.

Brazil now have a semi-final date with Joel Santana's South Africa in Johannesburg on Thursday.
