Though the worst fears over his health and career have passed, it is highly unlikely (to put it
mildly) that
Charlie Davies will be match fit in time for the 2010 World Cup. So
who to replace him?
Head over to ASN's USMNT page to vote in the poll.

It's that time of the year again. Major League Soccer has announced its nominees for 2009
individual player awards. While the viability of the nominees can be debated at length (Is Kasey
Keller really nominated for three awards? Why are three Sounders players nominated for one award?
etc.) what is more interesting is to figure out what you, the fan, think should deserve to win the
award in question.

Finally, the Major League Soccer regular season is over and the playoffs are upon us. Four
matchups await, to ultimately determine the two clubs that will meet at Seattle's Qwest Field in
the 2009 MLS Cup game on Nov. 22. Will the defending champion Columbus Crew avoid being upset by
Real Salt Lake, who snuck into the playoffs at the 11th hour?

AmericanSoccerNews.net was one of the first publications to embrace Twitter as journalistic tool
one year ago (almost to the day). We've since seen the technology explode for good and bad. We
recently came across Tweeterview, a site that allows users to conduct interviews through Twitter,
and thought it would be a great idea to try it out.

The Kansas City Wizards yesterday fired head Coach
Curt Onalfo, replacing him on
an interim basis with Peter Vermes (ironically the man who hired him after the 2006 season). In
close to two years as head coach of the Wizards, Onalfo assembled a record of 27-29-22. While that
does not come close to equaling some of the expectations that had been placed on the 39-year old
after a high profile assistant career (chiefly under Bruce Arena at the University of Virginia, DC
United and the U.

It's been a pretty impressive CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament for the U.S. Men's National Team
(though it's not over yet. Sunday's Giants Stadium finale against Mexico could turn it into a giant
disappointment). There have been several individual standouts among Bob Bradley's mainly young
squad. Can any of them improve the team that will travel to Mexico City's Estadio Azteca Aug.

Then there were four. The field at the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup has been whittled to a quartet of
semifinalists: Honduras, U.S.A., Mexico and Costa Rica. No major surprises, as these were arguably
the strongest four squads entering the tournament. So who will win? You tell us! Vote in the poll
and defend your choice in the comment field below.

After last season's back and forth (and back again) between the L.A. Galaxy and AC Milan,
David Beckham is finally due to rejoin the Galaxy next week. His stay in purgatory
is expected to be short--presumably just until the end of the season, at which point he will turn
his back on Major League Soccer for good.

As the minutes counted down to the U.S. Men's National Team's shocking upset of Spain in
Bloemfontein, South Africa yesterday, the speculation started: How big of an upset was this?
Obviously, huge. CONCACAF clubs don't just beat the reigning European champions (least of all
fielding their 'A' lineups) in the knockout rounds of major tourneys.

After Sunday's shocking turn of events (a.k.a. The Miracle on Grass) led to a surprising
semifinal berth at the 2009 Confederations Cup, the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team sets its sights
on Spain, whom it will face Wednesday afternoon. The European champions, winners 15 straight games
and unbeaten in their last 35, present the most formidable hurdle the U.

A post by MLS Talk was the immediate catalyst for this poll, but the reality is we have been
pondering the question for a while. How good is Major League Soccer when compared to some of the
world's best professional soccer leagues? Specifically, the English Premier League? Nobody is going
to mistake MLS clubs for the best the EPL squads, even on a good day and for good reason.

Calls for Juan Carlos Osorio's head are nothing new, but now comes word from the Washington Post, a
normally reliable source, that Red Bulls brass are losing patience with the man they hired to
replace Bruce Arena ahead of the 2008 season. It's hard to blame them, frankly. Last year's
postseason run aside, the team has mainly played bland, boring, defensive-minded soccer with a
rotating cast of mainly high-priced Latin American players brought in by Osorio himself.

Having started a commenter contest, we realized there are not all that many places to comment.
Sure, individual team pages offer plenty of opportunities, but we thought it time to bring fans of
all teams together in one spot. Here then, the following questions: What Major League Soccer team
has been the biggest pleasant surprise so far this year?
