Editor's note: At the end of the 2010 season, we posted a series of season reviews of every
Philadelphia Union player. Over the next several weeks PSP continues with a review of the 2011
season.
After an uneven 2010 season, Danny Califf was a player reborn in the Union's second season.
1. Find Abou Diaby
He's gone missing. Injurepol have been alerted but there is still no sign of our
no-minutes-on-the-pitch midfielder. If spotted, feel free to approach him. He's completely
harmless.
2. Avoid what Denilson's been drinking
Six appearances for Sao Paolo, three red cards.
Just when you thought all hope was lost, New York goes out and does this. A win, honest to
God, a win. For the first time since the July 6th drubbing of TFC, the Red Bulls claimed all
three points and boy did it feel good. Granted, it got a bit nervy there and it wasn't the pretty
display by any stretch of the imagination, but isn't that what it's all about?
As a follow-up to Saturday night's Salute To Heroes celebration and memorial, the New England
Revolution will be launching an online auction tomorrow at biddingforgood.com to raise money for
the 9/11 Memorial Fund. The Fund supports the ongoing development, operation and maintenance of the
new "Reflecting Absence" memorial at Ground Zero that was dedicated this past Sunday.
I couldn't watch the San Jose game until the last few minutes, so imagine my surprise when I
turned it on to see this. Mike Magee can't pick up the ball! That's a handball!! Well, not that
night.
Who would have thought that for a number of weeks keeper would be the most exciting position on
the field for the Galaxy?
FC Porto have added another keeper to the fold, picking up 30 year old Nacional keeper Rafael
Bracali on a free transfer. The Brazilian has been with Nacional since the 2006 season appearing in
104 games. Bracali joins a crowded Porto net with current starter Helton, Beto and Pawel Kieszek
all battling for time between the pipes for the Dragons
On the 26th June, the sixth Women's World Cup kicks off in Germany. It is twenty years since the
tournament started, during which time the women's game has come on significantly, particularly in
terms of its public profile. However, women's football particularly women's professional football
is still very much in its infancy.
Nick Green is on my starting XI of well-informed, highly respected soccer writers. He works hard
and has smart opinions.
So I hope he won't take offense when I respectfully disagree with a little something he wrote.
It's just a wee disagreement. Think "friendly debate over icy cold Pacificos" more than "screaming
match in the bosses' office.
Will you, Arsene? I'm not so sure.
That flushing sound you just heard may have been Arsenal's title hopes going down the pipes.
Some of you will remember that I was a guest on the Arsenal Review USA Podcast last week, and
was asked how realistic Arsenal's title hopes were. I replied that I had a tough time seeing
Arsenal win the title when the "unholy trio" of Almunia, Koscielny, and Squillaci were prominently
involved.
Dane's been the man of the moment this preseason.
The hectic preseason continued for New York as they wrapped up their final trip in Arizona this
week. The only thing is, did this long preseason leave us with more questions than answers?
Last time we spoke, the Red Bulls just finished up winning against Ft.
Just reading Jim White's excellent "Manchester United: The biography" (no, really). Dave
Sexton, who taught Roy Hodgson, has just been dismissed:
For the players, though they liked the manager and admired his knowledge of the game, there was
a sense of anticlimax, a feeling that somehow the voltage about the place had been reduced.
Barcelona has taken a majority in the Team of 2010, as of the eleven players in the fan-voted
note that six come from the land of Catalans, and five came through the pipes of that fabled youth
academy.
In other words: nothing to see here. Business as usual.
Without further ado, the Spanish-heavy, by club or country, and entirely imbalanced team of
2010.
Promoted to Front Page, as the Supplemental Draft on the 18th of January. The Draft will be
held over a conference call with teams being allowed to pick until they pass. Seattle has picks 11,
29, and 47 but is under no requirement to take a player.
The MLS Superdraft is complete and the Sounders came away from it in good shape.
With the 5th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft, the blue and gold have put all the guessing to
rest and snapped up goalie Zac MacMath. Straight outta Maryland (the same place a certain former
Union GK hails from), MacMath has a fantastic record and proven skill between the pipes. This is a
good pick.
