1990* : The philosophical inquirer Francis FUKUYAMA appropriates and reconceives the defunct
notional entity known variously as The New York Cosmos, The Cosmos, and Pele's Studio 54 Fantasia.
As an actual football team, this construct played its final match in 1985, but Fukuyama—working
in clandestine concert with the business operative Peppe PINTON, whom rumours nominate as a
fugitive from international justice—reinvents the Cosmos as the world's first post-historical
soccer club.
Fourteen years after he last kicked a ball in anger, and 16 years after his kung-fu kick (in
anger, of course), Eric 'the King' Cantona is back in soccer — improbably as the director of
soccer for the reborn New York Cosmos.

There has always been a connection between MLS and the Cosmos, ever since the league was founded
and began to establish itself as an entity that wouldn't disappear from the American sports
landscape, people have speculated about connecting easily the most famous American club name with
the top domestic league.
