FIFA World Player of the Year 2009 Shortlist

The 23 member shortlist for the 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year award has been announced. The winner will be announced on December 21, 2009. Giggs the top man in PFA awards

There seems to be mixed opinion on the announcement that Ryan Giggs has been voted the PFA's player of the season for the 2008-09 season.

A player who has only started 12 games this year, and played a predominant role from the subs bench, Giggs beat fellow United team mates, Van der Sar, Vidic, Ferdinand and Ronaldo, as well as Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, to the award, which is the first ever time he has received the honour.

Ryan Giggs Swipes PFA Award

He took down the long pass along the left side touchline. He turned the first West Ham defender who came at him and carried the ball into the box. Two quick touches and he turned the next defender as well. The box was still thick with players from the recent corner kick, but Giggs didn't worry about anyone as he fired the ball through traffic, into the far corner.

Ireland misses out on award

Stephen Ireland has missed out on winning this season's PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Ashley Young of Aston Villa took the prize at the Sunday night's ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, beating off competition from Gabriel Agbonlahor, Jonny Evans, Aaron Lennon and Rafael da Silva as well as Stephen.

It was announced tonight that Ryan Giggs has been named PFA Player Of The Year!

The 35 year old beat off competition from team-mates VDS, Nemanja Vidic, Ronaldo and Rio, as well as Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

It's Manchester United who dominate this years shortlist for the PFA player of the year award. Nemanja Vidic, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edwin van der Sar have all been put forward, along with Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard. Ireland nominated for young player of the year

STEPHEN IRELAND has been paid the ultimate compliment by his fellow professionals of being nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award.

His inclusion on a six-strong shortlist for the coveted prize is recognition of the gifted 22-year-old Blues midfielder's tremendous season both in the Barclays Premier League and the UEFA Cup campaign.
