Peterborough & District League Premier Division
Lindisfarne Road, PE6 7XH
After last weeks trip to the land of Satan that is a "premier league" football ground, I need to
cleanse my soul as it were and get back to watching the grass roots form of the game.
A lot of column centimetres have been devoted to Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes in recent
weeks and to have kept his head while others around him have been placing it upon the financial
guillotine has been admirable – yes, that's you David Gold. Three excellent articles in The
Seventy Two have explored the appeal of the man while our own blogger Ben profiled him in these
pages as 2012 drew to its conclusion.
When you break it down, what we love about sports are the memories they create.
You build stockpiles of those treasured days and nights. We all have our "Miracle On Ice"
moments, even if all can't rise to that level of cherish and intensity.
We fondly remember that special game at your high school.
It has been confirmed today that Manchester United youngster, Ryan Tunnicliffe, will remain at
Peterborough on loan for the rest of the season. He has made 24 appearances for the club since
joining them in the summer.
It has taken several weeks for an extension to be agreed but Barry Fry, the director of football
at Peterborough, spoke highly of the teenager when the deal was being talked about.
Peterborough's preseason ambitions were probably quite different to ours – consolidating their
Championship status after battling up from League One again, and whilst we may have harboured
loftier ambitions, they are currently a cool seven points clear of the drop zone whilst we retain
our place within the dreaded bottom three.
Skysports.com understands a host of clubs are tracking Shamrock Rovers striker Karl Sheppard.
Sheppard is out of contract at the end of the month and the news has alerted a number of clubs in
England to his possible availability.
Should Sheppard leave Shamrock Rovers any compensation for his signature would be minimal as he has
only been at the League of Ireland club for a year and joined them on a free transfer.
Last Tuesday night I sat through a freezing cold 4:0 defeat at Burnley and it was gutting.
I spent the whole drive home in deep thought, trying to make sense of what is going wrong with my
beloved Ipswich. I came to the conclusion that the most significant contributing factor to the 6
straight defeats was a lack of confidence.
The Peterborough United of 2009-10 were one of our three most heavily covered clubs. A tempestuous
period saw Darren Ferguson's exciting young team, enriched by a luxurious three pronged attack
consisting of George Boyd, Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron McLean, learn some harsh lessons when it
came to defence – by the time Mark Cooper, Jim Gannon and Gary Johnson had each taken a turn at
London Road
Sorry, Darren, I always Fergetcher name Sir Alex Ferguson chose last night's Champions League clash
with Benfica to give a second crack at Manchester United first-team football to his 39-year-old son
and current Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson... or so the BBC would have you believe. The
reporter on last night's news got a bit confused [.
How many emotions can one football team make you feel just three months into the season?
Elation: Check (Bristol Away)
Anger: Check (Peterborough Away)
Pride: Check (Coventry at Home)
Hope: Check (West Ham Away)
A little bit Lucky: Check (Portsmouth at Home)
Pure Frustration: Check (Millwall Away)
August's trip to Peterborough was devastating because it highlighted what a mess the side were in
at the time.

Leicestershire Intermediate Cup 2nd Round Lodge Farm, Oakley Drive, Loughborough
The drive from the University to Oakley Drive is less than a mile but with having some time to kill
between the games I went and had some lunch before arriving at the venue about ten minutes before
kick off.
I have a confession to make: there's a small part of me that's relieved we lost on
Saturday.
The recent run of good form has been a fascinating watch, and thoroughly deserved after the work
the boys put in to turn things around following Peterborough away.
But it had to end some time.
For this week's profile, we are made up to welcome David Wilkinson of the stunning Leeds United
Blog, The Scratching Shed (indeed, 'blog' seems such a humble word to describe such a multifaceted
treasure trove). Having spent this week pondering the controversy surrounding the Yorkshire club's
3-2 win over Peterborough at the weekend, David turns his attention to a man who returned from
exile this

In my state of drunk-with-happiness-following-our-amazing-3:1-win-over-Brighton I made a very
bold statement to the researchers at BBC 5 Live's 606:
'Ipswich Town are now the best team in the League'
Clearly I was a little overexcited. But, you know, the more I think about it the more I'm convinced
I'm right.
Last week, Sir Alex Ferguson singled out Ryan Tunnicliffe, Paul Pogba and Will Keane as
youngsters at United who had the potential to make it in the first team.
Paul Scholes, who has been working with our youngsters in his new coaching role, has supported
the manager's assessment, as well as praising Larnell Cole, who made his début against Leeds in
the League Cup last week.
With fourth spot in the Premiership all but wrapped up it's time for everyone to swing around
and face this direction once again, just hither. I appreciate it can be jolly dashed mind-boggling
these days trying to separate one competition from the next, but my spies tell me that tonight it's
Europa.
Four words you hate to wake up to in the morning: Narwich 2, Sunderland 1.
Listening to the last 15 minutes of the game last night my heart was in my mouth. Though it was a
shame not to hear Connor Wickham net a last minute equaliser against the Budgies - I found it
really exciting.
Shut the fucking door. El mercato has finally ceased, meaning we can finally get down to the
proper business of actually focusing on the football. I, for one, am ecstatic.
That's not to say the summer wasn't enjoyable. A tad chaotic and frustrating at times, yes, but
it certainly was an intriguing one for the club.
When it comes down to it, there are several categories which are splitting the Championship
equally. The resurgence of the newly promoted teams is wowing everybody and shows that you do not
have to spend large sums to get success. Unlike their Premier League counterparts, they do not have
millions to spare and could prove to be tricky.
Dundalk today today agreed the transfer of Ireland U21 international Daniel Kearns to English
Championship club Peterborough United, subject to final details being completed in the coming
days.
Belfast born Kearns, who was set for his 50th appearance for the club on Tuesday night, is expected
to travel to England on Monday for a medical, with a deal set to go through once that and the other
relevant paperwork is completed.
So, three weeks into the new Football League season and in many ways it's much the same as the
last. The divisions might be different, but Southampton and Brighton are still dazzling on the
south coast; Peterborough are still serving up improbable goalfests at London Road; Crawley are
still cruising at the top of the league; and, less happily, Plymouth's horrific decline continues
seemingly
Carlos Salcido started and played 82 minutes in Tigres de la Universidad
Autónoma de Nuevo León's (aka Tigres) 1-0 win over San Luis in Mexico's Apertura 2011.
David Stockdale started and made 5 saves in Ipswich Town's 5-2 loss to
Southampton last Tuesday.
Skysports are reporting that Championship side Peterborough United have tabled a bid for Dundalk
star Daniel Kearns.
The Belfast born Ireland U21 international has been earning rave reviews for the Airtricity Premier
League outfit and a number of clubs have been keeping tabs on his progress
Championship outfit Peterborough have held a long-term interest in Kearns and they have now firmed
up their interest with a six-figure offer for the exciting attacking midfielder.
With the top two from last year's League 1 table being transposed atop the Championship, it is
perhaps understandable that much attention has been focused on the South Coast mutual dislike
society, Southampton and Brighton. However, the third of the promoted clubs have also made an
encouraging start to their campaign.

Carling Cup football returns to Broadhall Way tomorrow night for the first time in just under a
year. Last season saw Stevenage make their first appearance in the League Cup against Portsmouth,

Last season, Brighton cantered to the title, with Southampton and Huddersfield fighting
neck-and-neck for most of the campaign before the Saints eventually prevailed and were joined in
the Championship by play-off winners Peterborough. But who will be up there or thereabouts this
year?
Who's Looking Good?
Who's Looking Good?
Leicester: Having massively overhauled the squad during the summer, signing no
less than nine players, including the marquee signings of Kasper Schmeichel, David Nugent, Michael
Johnson, Neil Danns and Paul Konchesky should give the Foxes the quality needed to reach the
Premiership for the first time since 2002.
A few weeks ago I commented on MK Dons striker Sam Baldock's decision to favour heart over head and
spurn newly promoted Peterborough's advances. Baldock claimed not to have felt excited by the
prospect of a move to Posh, and I praised his honesty, speculating as to how often the inane smiles
of new signings paraded before fans and media 'mask an expression of grim resignation at having

For the most part this site is resolutely non-partisan, shying away from inflammatory articles and
the bilious, monosyllabic responses they attract from spittle-flecked, talkSPORT-listening
meatheads in favour of carefully considered argument and reasonable, civil debate. In fact, the
only thing that seems to get the eminently agreeable Lanterne Rouge hot under the collar is a

Our votes in this most storied of categories were split evenly and many of the usual characters
cropped up. Grant Holt, so hearteningly wonderful in this year of Canary yellow, will be looking
back on his days as a definitive journeyman and Singapore leaguer with disbelief and Scott
Sinclair's play off heroics confirmed an ability to link wideside flair with end product.
First a caveat - it's a starry age for the blogosphere and this award was voted for by the 7 or 8
people who most regularly post at The Two Unfortunates. So, if your blog or website didn't get a
mention this time, it's not because we don't think you're great. Last year's winner BHaPPY
continues to excel and it was particularly heartening to see the return of the mighty SmogBlog.

Hit The North Last weekend EFW made a late decision to hit the north and take in a bit of football
and rugby league action. We saw Peterborough spank Huddersfield at Old Trafford in the League One
play-off final, followed that up with a brief stop over at The Reebok Stadium, Bolton before
rounding off the weekend at Wigan Warriers v Hull Kingston Rovers.
As the title above makes clear, I'll start first with the apologies. Posting about a player who
wasn't involved in this afternoon's rip-roarer feels like a missed opportunity, but having covered
the hero of hat-trick proportions back in November it seems inappropriate to double take. Of
course, Sinclair's fellow tormentor of many a Championship defence Fabio Borini would be a fine
substitute but

A flurry of late goals from Tommy Rowe, Grant McCann and the ridiculously prolific Craig
Makail-Smith were enough to see Darren Ferguson's Peterborough see off Lee Clarke's Huddersfield
(who came into the game on the back of a 27-league game unbeaten streak) to win the League One
play-off final at Old Trafford this afternoon after a one-year absence, Posh will be playing
Championship football again next season.
Fergie imposes his own Old Trafford ban Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson says his 'strange' dad
Sir Alex Ferguson will skip his side's League One play-off final for superstitious reasons.
Ferguson Jr admits that he too would have fears about the Manchester United manager jinxing him for
the match, which is being held at Old Trafford.
