Manchester United 2-2 Rotor Volgograd (Agg: 2-2 RV win on away goals)
It probably made sense that goalkeeper-turned-goalscorer Peter Schmeichel found the net in this
one; simply put, everything about this game felt out of place. Back then, in 1995, there was no
shame in being in the UEFA Cup — you'd qualify by finishing runners-up in the League.
Carlsberg announced that it has today appointed Peter Schmeichel, legendary former goalkeeper for
Denmark and Manchester United, as its global ambassador for the duration of the brand's UEFA EURO
2012™ campaign
Sir Alex Ferguson has spent 25 years as the manager of Manchester United and he has won the Premier
League 12 times, FA Cup 5 times, League Cup 4 times, the Champions League twice, 10...

Everton keeper Tim Howard became only the fourth keeper in Premier League
history to score a goal when he scored last night against Bolton in their 2-1 defeat at Goodison
Park. The Other three are:
Peter Schmeichel for Aston Villa v Everton in 2001 at Goodison Park.
Andrew Cole has reflected on memories of his former Manchester United team mate and manager when
he was at Sunderland, Roy Keane, following his very public falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson.
"I was trying to sleep in a Hong Kong hotel when I heard the banging in the corridor,"
said Cole.
1. Arsenal anniversary celebrations like most Arsenal matches would be a duller place without Robin
Van Persie. What a sweet goal. 2. If Martin O'Neill continues to bring that level of luck to
Sunderland, Black Cats fans will be delighted to have him around the place. 3. Just imagine what
Stoke City could [.
The Top Footballing Feuds - originally posted on Soccerlens.com
It seems that footballers have been at each other throats for the past 10 days. We have
had handbags, abusive comments, slaps and theatrics up and down the country. These tête
têtes however will have to go some way to match:
Roy Keane v Patrick Viera
Very few feuds can match the rivalry between two of the best centre midfielders of their
generation.
There's a odd aspect of history that I'm often drawn to think about. It's the
degrees-of-separation game extended through time. Consider this as an example: I know a woman who
as a teenager in Jamaica met T. S. Eliot, whose grandmother she lived next door to him in St. Louis
remembered her great-uncle John Adams, who once, when living in Paris, met Voltaire at the
theatre.
Arsenal's new Number One is making quite a name for himself in the opening weeks of the
season.
He made a string of fine saves in the cauldron of Udine, including a Seaman-esque penalty stop,
to effectively win Arsenal £25m and guarantee their participation in this year's Champions
League.
Despite being just 20 years of age David De Gea has shown maturity in recent weeks that bodes
well for his future at Old Trafford.
The former Atletico Madrid keeper has not had the best of starts to his time at Old Trafford. In
the first live football of the season, the Community Shield, he was to blame for both of Manchester
City's goals.
This summer Manchester United faced a challenge in the transfer market that had similar
connotations to 1999 when the great Dane Peter Schmeichel announced he would be leaving for
pastures new. Back then, it was felt that the decision on his replacement was made in a rather
hasty fashion with the unpredictable Australian Mark Bosnich being [.
I think we can all agree football is broken. Whilst millions of pounds are being spent on
players like Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll, famous clubs like Wrexham are struggling to
survive. My ten point plan will not save football in its entirety, but it will help make it a darn
sight more enjoyable.

Much comparisons have been made between Manchester United's new Spanish keeper David De
Gea and former Italian keeper Massimo Taibi who had a nightmare 3 games with United after
signing for £4.5m in 1999. He played 4 in all for the Red Devils.
However Peter Schmeichel didn't have the best of starts at United either and we know what he did
at the club.

One of the more interesting snippets of news over last week was the confirmation that Ferguson has
told Peter Schmeichel to keep his opinions to himself in relation to new boy David de Gea. United's
Spanish stopper had what can only be described as a nightmare at Wembley in Sunday's 3-2 Community
Shield win over Manchester City.
AMSTERDAM - Manchester United are working their way around America on their way to Wednesday's
MLS All-Star Game rematch at Red Bull Arena (Wednesday, 8:30 p.m. ET; ESPN2/Telefutura/TSN), making

Well, well, well.
Who wasn't just a bit suspicious when, asked a few weeks ago about Edwin Van Der Sar's impending
retirement, Sir Alex Ferguson commented that now would be the right time for the great Dutchman to
end his career on a high and at his peak?
No no, not because that's a stupid way to think, although it is.
Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague broke the news on Revista de la Liga that
Manchester United prospect David de Gea will be in the Old Trafford nets next season. The 20 year
old goalkeeper should be unveiled in the near future as a United player for around £17 million and
will be seen as an immediate replacement to retiring goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.
There are many cases in which footballers are talked up as being "the greatest in the world" or
"the best player in this era", but the true measure of a great of the game is longevity. Lionel
Messi might be the talk of the town; he is currently recognised as the very best by many observers
at this moment but he is no legend, not yet anyway.
In less than two weeks' time, we'll bid adieu to the finest Manchester United keeper since Peter
Schmeichel, as Edwin van der Sar will stroll off into the sunset after the (hopefully victorious)
Champions League final against Barcelona.
Is the end also approaching for another United veteran?
Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes that Sir Alex Ferguson is the best manager in
the world.
The Scot has won 11 Premier League titles and looks set to win a 12th with just one point needed
from the club's remaining two games, while he has also won the Champions League twice with the Red
Devils.
Arsenal's flame may have petered out somewhat in recent years, but Wenger's boys-turned-men came
awfully close this year to winning their first league title since 2004. They may not possess the
same tenacity as Manchester United but they are as good as anyone in the league on their day, as we
seen last Saturday with the victory over United that could help Chelsea retain their title.
Edwin Van der Sar has revealed in the Dutch press that Manchester United have decided on his
replacement, but it's not Schalke's Manuel Neuer.
"United have made their decision," he said. "It's not Neuer, but I can't say any
more than that."
Peter Schmeichel has claimed that Bayern Munich-bound Neuer is the best keeper in the world
though.
Last night belonged to Manchester United. Their 2-0 victory over FC Schalke 04 in Germany was
masterminded by the back-in-form Wayne Rooney as the England man and United legend Ryan Giggs both
struck in the space of three minutes to take a vital win away from the Veltins Arena and begin to
set-up camp on the Wembley porch.
Much has been made of treble winning goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel suggestion that Manchester United
should grab the £50-60million Real Madrid is reportedly willing to pay for Wayne Rooney in
summer....

Mr Bendtner is a man who creates waves, everyone has an opinion about Nik and for a man who has
yet to play a consistent first team role in the Premiership, he attracts an enormous amount of
publicity. Why? Perhaps it is his self-belief that rubs the humble Anglo Saxon mentality up the
wrong way or is it his happy swagger and the fact he finds football amusing?
noruego.
Albert Camus, goal keeper of French Algerian descent.
Famous author and philosopher Albert Camus once said, "All that I know most surely, about the
morality and the obligations of man, I know from sport." His sport of choice? Football of course,
and his chosen position was goal keeper, the place of those odd men who live in a very different
psychological universe than the rest of the players on the field.

Sir Bobby Charlton is deservedly a national hero. It is easy to forget how major a star he was
in his day, and difficult to fathom just how huge he would be if playing nowadays.
But Sir Bobby Charlton is also the official flag-waver-in-chief for Manchester United and, not
for the first time, his interpretation of the facts is completely delusional.
In an age where footballers seem to care more about their wage packet, loyalty is often
overlooked.
Gary Neville, 35, hung up his boots on Wednesday as he called time on an extraordinary 19 years
playing for the club he has always cherished, Manchester United.
His loyalty to United was unwavering and his professionalism on the pitch and dedication to the
cause, won the affections of both team-mates and fans alike.
Hat tip to 101 Great Goals for collating some brilliant clips that epitomise what Gary Neville was
all about; passion, desire, hunger, determination, strength, bravery, loyalty,
dedication.......

It's a sad day. An iconic figure in the English game has hung up his boots after an illustrious
career. Gary Neville has finally called it a day at the age of 35, not short of a trophy or an
England cap or two. A widely hated figure outside of Manchester (and in certain parts of it),
Neville may be missed equally by opposition fans – Red Nev, the embodiment of Manchester United
and Ferguson's philosophy, has been a premier exponent of some of the most tasty rivalries in the
Premier League.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it
was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the
season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of
despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven,
we were all going direct the other way in short, the period was so far like the present period,
that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the
superlative degree of comparison only.
