No, there isn't thing officially saying that MLS is coming to Detroit, and I'm not insinuating
that it is.
Today the Pontiac Silverdome was sold for peanuts, really. $583,000 for an 80,000-seat stadium.Â
The Silverdome certainly has aged, and it hasn't aged well, but it could always be upgraded and
when it's all said and done this firm, which at the moment is still anonymous, got it for a
steal.

Big Story
The surprising news that one of the greatest and highest-earning footballers of his generation,
John Barnes, had somehow managed to end up bankrupt is superbly deconstructed in a
piece looking at players' incomes and financial cluelessness by former Ireland star Tony
Cascarino, as he considers how the likes of even recent Premier League stars like Eric
Djemba-Djemba and John Arne Riise have somehow suffered a similar fate despite their massive pay
checks.

He was often lampooned for his disgusting alleged antics, which include peeping under the ladies
toilet door; he is also the man who was willing to sell the club for 'peanuts' to Michael

eventually forced to resign as United's chairman in 2002 over alleged engagements with prostitutes

A great man (Alan Curbishley) once said "don't let the highs be too high, or the lows too low",
but it would take a hard man not to forgive Charlton fans for wearing a cautious, toothy grin at
present.
Following a treacherous three seasons, a 100% record at this stage was not on even the most
optimistic Addick's radar.

Seems very pricey to me. I realise he's only 19 but we have been burnt too many times in recent
seasons on young players with potential. To be honest, I'm not an expert on the lad or French
football in general but he does seem to have only had the one good season which was last year when
Toulouse finished 4th.

John Terry has pledged his future to Chelsea after the much publicised pursuit of the England
and Chelsea skipper by Mark Hughes at Manchester City.
With the bottomless pit of money on offer at Eastlands, it would not have been a surprise if he
had got his man.
Terry though has reaffirmed his commitment to the Blues after many thought he might be persuaded
to make the move to City.

Who is watching Honduras v. USA in the CONCACAF Gold Cup?
I'm watching, on WUTF, one of Boston's Spanish language networks, catching the starting minutes
of the game.
Its not always fun watching the USMNT menos Landycakes, Altidore, Dempsey, etc...Yet i find
myself spending my precious free time following an often amateurish match AND its not even in
English.

I'd link to it, but it requires a subscription (or at least a free trial), and I'm not going to
put you through that. Suffice to say, it's a small part of one of many interviews Grant
Wahl has done recently about his new book, The Beckham Experiment (the latest
trial is tonight when LA plays at New York, 8pm ET, Fox Soccer Channel).

The summer transfer window does not open for another four weeks, but the amount of money being
branded about by as being available this summer is astounding. Newspaper reports say that both
Manchester City and Real Madrid have transfer budgets of between £250 and £260 million. Yes you
read that right.

Many Arsenal fans, journalists and people in football cannot understand why Wenger does not
spend money in the transfer market.  They see our weaknesses, they see a massive stadium sold
out for every game and record profits recorded year after year and ask themselves why will he not
spend?

The St Joseph News has done an excellent job of looking at the escalating cost of competing in
the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). It's primarily a football discussion
but it points to the role of Athletics on campus and as part of the process of differentiating a
school and a program.

Rumours continue to abound about unpaid salaries throughout the ISL. You still see quotes from club
officials, living in some parallel universe, insisting they are waiting for local government funds
even though this have been disallowed.
Clubs used to a culture of handouts and opaqueness just aren't going to embrace the world of
marketing and cash flows just like that.

I hope you've bought your peanuts, because the circus is coming to town. With less fanfare than a
year ago (read: tickets are not sold out), David Beckham and the Rest of The Galaxy, whoever those
guys are, are making their way to DC for a nationally televised game (ABC Super Happy Fun Soccer
sunday).

What the people who suggest "soccer will never be popular in the US" are trying to say
is, "soccer as a professional spectator sport will never be popular in the US". Near term
- probably, long term - maybe, never - unlikely. What most conscious people have known for about a
decade or so now is that football is the most popular participation team sport (approx.

A recent article over at CNN got me thinking a bit about food allergies and how they might impact a
soccer association. The article is a heart wrenching tale about a parent's discovery that they have
a child who is extremely allergic to many types of food, including peanuts, wheat, and dairy. They
talk about [.
