I posted about Beckham's most famous sending off on the main page earlier, but thought it was
worth re-posting here on the England blog too.
We all know what happened. The 23 year old David Beckham was fouled by Diego Simeone, and then
foolishly had a kick at Simeone's calf in retaliation.

The press coverage afforded to John Terry's ignominious relinquishment of the England captaincy
last week has been so overwhelming that, amidst it all, the significance of Fabio Capello's
decision to give the armband to Rio Ferdinand has largely been overlooked. The Manchester United
defender has captained England in the past, but his permanent appointment in the role means that,
for the first time in the history of English football, a player with Afro-Caribbean ancestry
(Ferdinand's father is from St Lucia) will be recognised, conclusively, as the leader of the
national side.

Our Big Phil wants out, we all know that, and rumours are still around that David Moyes wants
him at Everton and need another top notch defender to be there in case TV or Gallas get injured. I
know we have Silvestre and Big Sol but if either Gallas or Vermaelen suffered a long term injury
would they have the legs to play every two or three days?

We've said it once and we'll say it again: nothing good ever comes of the January transfer
window. But while rumours of big-money moves and blockbuster trades persist, here is our pick of
four relegation-bound players ripe for the plucking:
Morten Gamst Pedersen. Having threatened to drop off the radar under Paul
Ince's stewardship, the Norwegian winger looks to be re-discovering his best form with Big
Sam in charge.

"We're looking to do something with Nigel but we are waiting on a phone call from his agent and
some contact with someone at West Ham.

Liverpool will be hoping to take another step on the road to recovery this weekend when they tackle
Blackburn Rovers, who showed in midweek that they are more than capable of running with the Premier
League's big boys.
Rovers booked their place in the League Cup semi-finals on Wednesday with a shock win over
table-toppers Chelsea.

"When the bus arrived back in Liverpool, I didn't want to get out. I thought it wouldn't be long
until I was out permanently, sent back to the Under-19s with a note marked 'not good enough'."
It was December 1998 when Steven Gerrard felt this way. He was 18, and had just seen his first
senior start for Liverpool ruined.

Steven Gerrard has admitted Liverpool's chances of catching Barclays Premier League leaders Chelsea
are slim and that Champions League qualification is now the target.
The Reds are in fifth place, 13 points behind Chelsea and two behind fourth-placed Arsenal having
played a game more than the Gunners.

The question above brings me to Ives' news today that the Red Bulls' coaching hunt includes two
foreign names with no MLS connections - former Norway coach Age Hareide and former Portsmouth coach
and Arsenal legend, Tony Adams.
Let's start with Hareide because no one here, including me, has ever heard of him before.

Danny Simpson left Manchester United under a bit of a cloud after mistakes in his personal life
saw Sir Alex Ferguson ship him out to Blackburn Rovers. The move was supposed to be as a favour to
Paul Ince but Danny struggled to get in the team and the move became a bit of a waste of time.
Simpson is enjoying himself a lot more at Newcastle though and reckons he would sign for them if
he was asked in January or at the end of the season.

We'll be back a little later on today with a report on the match between Paulton Rovers and
Norwich City. In the meantime, however, The First Round of The FA Cup started yesterday evening
with three matches. The remainder, of course, are to be played over the next three days. One of the
traditions of The FA Cup is the press sending one of their hacks who is probably none too happy at
not being to assigned to a Premier League match to write a few words about the smaller clubs that
are taking their spot in the limelight.

As Michael Owen prepares to go back to Anfield as a United player, another player to break the

There is generally at least one managerial casualty in the opening stages of a new season and
there are plenty of contenders in the Premier League in my opinion. Portsmouth, Hull City
and Blackburn are the current occupiers of the relegation places but Bolton, West
Ham and Wigan aren't fairing much better and heads may roll before October (or even
September) is out.

As the EPL and the rest of Europe completes the first month of the domestic season, it is

Saturday, June 1st, 1991 was the day when Man Utd won the Cup Winners Cup beating Barca, 2-1 in
a nerve wracking final, the first such honour for an English side.
Steve Bruce almost scored a goal but it was Mark Hughes with two goals who stole the show. In
that squad too were Paul Ince, Bryan Robson, and Mike Phelan.

Arthur Wharton - the first black pro footie player.

Darren Ferguson was brought through the ranks at Manchester United with his dad and manager, Sir

for a league title winners medal.

You would think that our fans had never seen through a whole season supporting United, judging
by the reaction to our defeat against Burnley. Don't get me wrong, it was a dreadful result and a
poor performance, but christ, it's not as if we haven't seen them before. Just looking over the
past ten years or so, we've had some bloody awful results and performances.

Over the past couple of weeks we have heard Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson predicting
his team's success would continue on into this new season. Given Ferguson has often proven his
doubters wrong, the departures of key players over the summer and the failure to adequately replace
them has left a lot of questions over the quality of this team.

A strange lull has fallen over the Premier League at the moment. Almost eerie. I can feel it,

In what was supposed to be the season of goodwill, it transpired that there was really no hope

The Premier League was targeted firstly by the campaign, as its high profile and influential
nature was hopefully going to place a "verbal cull" on some of its more outspoken players, and
indeed managers.
