Gary Smith, who led the Colorado Rapids to an improbable championship in 2010, was shown the
door on Monday.
The coach, who had agreed to a new contract, and the team announced a parting of the ways on
Monday afternoon. The departure came the same day that Rapids players cleared out their lockers
following a 4-0 aggregate loss to Kansas City in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
At one point this season I thought about having Gary Smith on my coaching hot seat list but a
midseason turnaround kind of killed that thought for me. Turns out, we could be close to him
leaving Colorado anyways. He and TD Paul Bravo are apparently not on the same page these days.
In a way I wonder if this could have something to do with Smith staying behind for one of the
Rapids CCL games on the road.
Although there have been many wide open games in the previous 15 MLS All-Star gatherings,
Colorado Rapids players have rarely stolen the spotlight.
