D.C. United found themselves in a tale of two halves in tonight's preseason finale against Las Vegas Lights FC. A fairly tight first half saw few chances and just one goal, from Yamil Asad, but the second half was another story.

D.C. United has a defensive midfielder around which they can build for years

Of all of D.C. United's midseason acquisitions, Russell Canouse was the one with the most mystery surrounding it. Paul Arriola was the big splash, Zoltan Stieber had the pedigree of a player who could reliably produce in Major League Soccer, Deshorn Brown was the MLS veteran, and Bruno Miranda was the flyer on a promising young talent.

Is the Black-and-Red's record transfer ready to be the face of the club?

Even now, two and a half months later, D.C. United's decision to spend over $3 million in real-life money to acquire USMNT winger Paul Arriola from Club Tijuana still feels like a surprise. We all knew intellectually that United would be spending on players to open Audi Field in 2018, but was anyone expecting this big of a move — and for a young player rather than an over-30 big name that would move jerseys — well ahead of the first game at the Black-and-Red's new home?

This transfer window wasn't just a fluke

Stepping back for a second and looking at a hectic two weeks that saw D.C. United get attached to World Cup veterans (Nigel De Jong, Gary Medel) and club players with national team experience in Europe (Marcus Olsson, Krisztian Nemeth), they eventually "settled" on adding a Young Designated Player from CONCACAF with Liga MX experience (the United States' Paul Arriola), his US youth teammate (Russell Canouse, recently with Hoffenheim and Bochum in Germany), a teenager with caps for a CONMEBOL national team (Bruno Miranda), and a left wing with experience in UEFA competition (Zoltan Stieber) over the course of the last five days of the secondary transfer window.
