Chicago ended the year as potentially the best non-playoff team in MLS. They caught "fire" and
had a winning record for the final third of the season, almost stealing the tenth playoff spot from
New York. The same team that ...

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Fire's postseason hopes were erased Thursday night with the New
York Red Bulls clinching the final playoff spot. But that does not mean there is little value to
the Fire's home finale when they host the Columbus Crew.
Seattle Sounders have won the US Open Cup in each of the three years of their existence in MLS.
Although Sounders have been a model franchise for expansion their model of success was the Chicago
Fire. Chicago Fire had been the last expansion team to make the MLS playoffs, not to mention
winning the MLS Cup, in their 1998 inaugural season and winning the US Open Cup.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Fire made an early push on the offensive end, and they needed every
goal to overcome a late lapse on the defensive end against the New England Revolution on Sunday.
Chicago tallied three first-half goals and edged the Revs, 3-2, in front of 14,576 at Toyota Park.
Josh Wolff's goal in the 73rd minute allowed D.C. United to extend their unbeaten streak on the
road to seven matches with their 1-1 draw tonight against the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Fire so often have had to quickly put the past behind them to
rebound from a poor effort. But Sunday's road loss to the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps appears to
have lingered just a bit more than usual.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The theme around the Chicago Fire locker room during the midweek was toward
forging ahead in the midst of a disappointing outcome.
The players certainly have had to cope with quite a few, and their most recent effort was
out-playing the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday, only to manage a 1-1 draw.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- Chicago Fire midfielder Patrick Nyarko and forward Dominic Oduro exemplify the
type of international draw that Manchester United has.
The Ghanaian duo has followed Man U's brand of soccer since they were kids. And like tens of
millions of other Red Devils fans, they have appreciated everything from afar.
Frank Klopas -- Getty ImagesBRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Fire's dreaded winless streak has
passed. Now the Fire have the task of building off of a long-awaited victory when they take on the
New England Revolution on Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
Chicago's team-record 11-game span without a victory was an unavoidable talking point over a
two-and-a-half-month stretch.
Cristian Nazarit -- Getty ImagesFor 280 minutes, the Chicago Fire could not put anything in the
net. But on Sunday, Fire forward Cristian Nazarit broke that scoring drought with a game-winning
tally in second-half stoppage time en route to a 1-0 win over the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium in
Columbus, Ohio.
Fire's Logan Pause -- Getty ImagesBRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Fire, winless in four straight
games, are not the only ones in MLS in need of a momentum shift. The Fire face the defending MLS
champion Colorado Rapids this Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce, Colo., and the
host Rapids are in a three-game skid of their own.

streak and only one point in hand during April, the Chicago Fire are regularly deciphering their
shortcomings to turn around a poor start to the 2011 season. The Fire hover near the bottom of the
Eastern Conference with a 1-3-2 record, with Saturday's game at the defending MLS champion Colorado
Rapids on the horizon.
Fire midfielder Patrick Nyarko -- Getty ImagesChicago Fire midfielder Patrick Nyarko said he was "a
little lucky" that his injury during Saturday's 2-1 loss to Seattle Sounders FC was not severe.
Nyarko was dealt a vicious knock from Sounders midfielder Servando Carrasco at the end of
regulation and into second-half stoppage time.
Marco Pappa -- Getty ImagesBRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- Last year's .500 record at home was a glaring
problem that the Chicago Fire wanted to fix this season. It got off to a good start on
Saturday.
Diego Chaves scored his second goal in as many games, and Gaston Puerari and Marco Pappa also added
scores as the Fire defeated Sporting Kansas City, 3-2, in front of a crowd of 12,157 at their home
opener at Toyota Park.

I've been tossing around different ideas in my head for weeks now for when it comes to
previewing the new season ahead. I'm fairly certain I'll do my usual team-by-team breakdown but
given the fact that there are now 18 clubs that task will certainly take a good amount of time for
a busy guy like myself.
