From the US Soccer website's game notes:
There are a few instances in sporting history of father's coaching their son's at the highest
level. A couple of famous ones include - Cesare and Paolo Maldini in soccer and Cal Ripken Sr. and
Jr. in baseball.
"But how about having two teams with this phenomenon playing against each other - anyone heard
of that happening?

In football attacking players often get most of the praise when their team is achieving results
while players in other positions are often overlooked. Defenders are typically ignored when
accolades and awards are given out, yet it would be wrong to underestimate the contribution and
influence of key defensive players such as Italy's Paolo Maldini or France's Lilian Thuram, just
to name a couple of outstanding talents.

The Offside's Main Page decided to compile a list of the "100 Best Players of the Decade." I
thought it might be of some interest to you, especially since Arsenal is out of action for a couple
of weeks. It was voted on by all of the Offside's bloggers, as well as readers. I will say that I
thought the criteria was a little vague it was simply to name the 20 best players who played in the
decade.

When you think of football's greatest one-club men, the likes of Tony Adams, Paolo Maldini and Ryan
Giggs spring to mind. But how hard can it be to stay at a club at the pinnacle of European
football? Was their loyalty truly tested? The same question cannot be asked of Matt Le Tissier, the
Southampton legend and one of the finest players to grace the Premier League stage.

Milan vs. Inter
Could the Derby della Madonnina, the first big derby of the 09-10 season in any European league,
live up to the hype? Inter came into the game favorites to win the scudetto after mostly adding to
the squad that has won the Serie A four years running. AC Milan did not add much in the offseason,
and suffered the huge losses of Carlo Ancelotti, Paolo Maldini and Kaka.

At yesterday's Champions League group draw, UEFA president Michel Platini honored recently
retired Paolo Maldini with a special lifetime achievement award a fine gesture for a legendary
player. Unfortunately, no one at UEFA could be bothered to spell check it.
The message on the award, written in Italian, reads: "In recognition of your excelent career and
of your extraordinary contribution to football.

In 2003 Italian club football reached its peak when AC Milan and Juventus met in the Champions
League Final in Manchester. Six years later, that same Final was held in Rome, but Italian sides
were nowhere to be found. All of them had left the competition following the Round of 16. The
2008-09 campaign was a step back for Serie A.

American Lance Armstrong seems to be channeling Paolo Maldini these days by hanging tough with
athletes who were born at least a decade after him. Today on the Tour de France's gruelling 20th
stage ride up Mont Ventoux, Armstrong beat back several attacks to cement his third place standing
for the ride into Paris tomorrow.

After much speculation and interest from over a dozen clubs, US and Standard Liege defender Oguchi
Onyewu has just signed a 3-year deal to join AC Milan. He will be the first American to play in
Serie A since Alexis Lalas played for Padova from 1994-1996.
Gooch's move to Milan makes much sense when one considers that the Rossaneri's ageing back line was
overdue for renewal, especially given the retirement of longtime great Paolo Maldini.

First a shout out to our readers in Canada. Happy Canada Day!
In a world where loyalty is hard to come by, it's still nice to know that in some part of the
world it still exists. Case in point, Manchester United and Nemanja Vidic. But before I go into
that let us take a brief trip down memory lane to see how those who were tempted by cash and left
for so called "greener" pastures.

A few eyebrows will doubtless be raised by Chelsea's decision to appoint an exotic continental

to control the dressing room given his alarming accurate impression of an overweight Andrew SachsÂ

After years of underachievement, it seems a new era is set to begin at AC Milan. While the club
have enjoyed some success in recent years, including a seventh UEFA Champions League trophy in
2007, it has been a disappointing few years for the Rossoneri as they have failed to mount a
realistic challenge for the Scudetto while city rivals Internazionale have established a
strangehold on the Serie A title.

It's Friday. Hurrah.
A quiet blog for you this morning but with an Arsecast special, the details of which you'll have

So while the vast majority of Premier League fans rejoice at the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo
and hope that he's welcomed to Spain in the same way that bull the other week welcomed the
Matador's intestines to the top of his horn, Arsenal fans will be reassured by the latest
proclamation from Cesc Fabregas that he sees his future with us.

With the retirements of Luis Figo,Paolo Maldini,Pavel Nedved and the possible transfers of Kaka to

in regards to what this means for the Serie A as a European power player. Add to this the rumors
that Carlo Ancelotti will also take with him Alexandre Pato and Andrea Pirlo and what comes of this

players. In the past game Maldini has allowed to be the "4th" substitute during the game, to allow
the fans to cheer Maldini for a final time.

Well... we wouldn't have guessed the irony of this photo after Milan's 2-0 victory over
Fiorentina last night. It wasn't just Paolo Maldini's last official game for the Rossoneri - but
also Ancelotti's. After eight memorable years, we bid goodbye to Carlo. But if he
goes to Chelski (notice the second irony : Adrian Mutu's name in the backdrop), he should expect a
drastic change in his managerial duties.
