This week was all about conference tournaments for the Marquette, UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay women's soccer teams.
The Golden Eagles cruised into the semifinals of the Big East Conference tournament, while the Panthers earned the right to play host to the Horizon League semifinals and final next weekend after extending their amazing run of regular-season titles.
The 2012 season kicked off across the nation for NCAA Division I women's soccer teams this
weekend, with Marquette scheduled to take on another nationally ranked foe, UW-Milwaukee playing
its first matches under new coach Greg Henschel and UW-Green Bay coach
Trevor Warren looking to get his team's offense going after a frustrating 2011
season.
The NCAA Division I women's soccer season kicks off Friday, and all four Wisconsin teams will be
in action on their home turf on opening night.
Rivals UW-Milwaukee and Marquette play host to Milwaukee Cup matches, and both teams will be
starting their first seasons without players who have been integral over the past few years.
UW-Milwaukee and Marquette each won conference titles, each advanced to the second round of the
NCAA tournament and each had four players named to National Soccer Coaches Association of America
women's all-region teams.
The Panthers' trio of senior forward Sarah Hagen (Appleton North), senior midfielder
Keara Thompson and junior goalkeeper Jamie Forbes were all first-team selections on
the All-Great Lakes Region team, while junior midfielder Helen Steinhauser made the second
team.
Soccer fans in Milwaukee have two NCAA Division I tournament matches to choose from Saturday
night, as both No. 12 Marquette and 15th-ranked UW-Milwaukee are playing host to first-round
games.
Both teams are in the tournament for the fourth straight year and the eighth time since 2001 –
coincidentally, each team has qualified in the same years in that time.
UW-Milwaukee celebrated another Horizon League championship on its home field Sunday, now the
Panthers will wait to see where they end up in the 64-team NCAA tournament bracket.
City rival Marquette also will learn its NCAA tournament assignment when the field and pairings
are announced Monday.
Marquette made sure it heads into the postseason firing on all cylinders, racking up yet another shutout as it remained unbeaten since early September.
UW-Milwaukee, meanwhile, came up with a victory that was big on two fronts: First of all, it was over state rival UW-Green Bay, and secondly it moved the Panthers into a tie for first place in the Horizon League with just one week of matches remaining.
Jamie Bladen's 50th-minute goal for UW-Milwaukee on Wednesday night was the first for the Panthers against the University of Wisconsin since 2007.
It also was enough to give his team its first win over its state rival in seven years.
Bladen cleaned up from close range after the Badgers couldn't clear the ball out of the box after a free kick, and freshman goalkeeper Connor Revsbeck made five saves for the clean sheet in his first career start in Milwaukee's 1-0 win at the McClimon Complex.
Falling behind UW-Milwaukee seemed to flip a switch for the University of Wisconsin women's soccer team Wednesday night.
The 13th-ranked Badgers seized control of the match after giving up the opening goal in the 58th minute, getting a 78th-minute equalizer from sophomore Kodee Williams and a 96th-minute game-winner from Joana Bielefeld (Brookfield Central) to rally past the Panthers 2-1 in a non-conference match watched by 1,116 at Engelmann Stadium.
It was a pretty good weekend for the Marquette, UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay men's soccer
teams, with five wins and just one loss among the sides.
The Golden Eagles remained unbeaten, while the Panthers extended their winning streak to three
games and won their own tournament. The Phoenix, meanwhile, had a thrilling double-overtime victory
on Friday night, but lost a key player to injury and settled for their second straight 1-1-0
weekend after losing Sunday.
What an opening weekend it was for the Marquette, UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee men's soccer
teams, with a show-stopping finish, inaugural victories for new coaches, a school record and the
best start for one team in 12 years.
Catch up on all the action in our weekly review of the Golden Eagles, Phoenix and Panthers.
The Marquette women's team won its annual matchup with city rival UW-Milwaukee on Friday night,
but that was the only bright spot on the weekend for the Golden Eagles, Panthers and UW-Green
Bay.
Catch up on all the action for all three teams in our weekly review.
The UW-Milwaukee women's soccer team might have a new coach, but the Panthers will head into the
season in the same position they've been for the past 12 years: As the Horizon League favorite.
Conference coaches put Milwaukee atop their annual preseason poll for the 13th consecutive
season, this time in a tie with Detroit.
UW-Milwaukee stayed in-state – and in its own conference – to find its newest men's soccer
coach.
Neenah native Kris Kelderman is leaving UW-Green Bay after one season to become the
seventh coach in Panthers history, multiple sources familiar with the situation said Tuesday.
Kelderman couldn't be reached for comment and an email to Kathy Litzau, the UW-Milwaukee
associate athletic director who oversees the men's soccer program, wasn't immediately returned.

All is quiet on the expansion front with no new team set to join the league in 2013.Â
Nevertheless, there are a number of potential expansion candidates waiting in the wings. Last
week, the Minnesota legislature voted in a stadium bill to keep the Vikings in Minnesota. The
stadium project is expected to cost almost a billion dollars.
Curtis Weir scored directly off a corner kick in the 59th minute as DePaul
topped host UW-Milwaukee 1-0 in a men's exhibition match Monday at Engelmann Stadium.
"I was very pleased with today's performance," Kris Kelderman said in a news
release following his first match as Panthers coach.
As expected, the UW-Milwaukee men's soccer team's 2012 roster looks a lot different than it did
a few months ago.
Kris Kelderman's squad for his first season as Panthers coach includes five
transfers, five freshmen who weren't part of the team's announced recruiting class in February and
two former players who have returned to the program.
Co-hosts Gabon looked like it was going to be headed to their best showing in any ACN when Eric
Mouloungui shot them into the lead in the 55th minute. But Mali had other ideas as Cheick Diabate
equalized in the 84th minute. At the end of extra time, with the two teams deadlocked, the fate of
the match was decided on PK shootout.

eligibility.
The junior trio of defender Kayla Kaeppler, midfielder Kara Jahn and forward
Lauren Hughes and freshman midfielder Kelsey Jahn all made the top team for the
Panthers along with senior defender Morgan Johnson.
UW-Milwaukee men's soccer coach Chris Whalley and assistant Ben Shepherd have been
placed on administrative leave, athletic director Rick Costello confirmed Monday.
Costello declined to say why the action was taken against Whalley and Shepherd, who have led the
Panthers' program for the past two seasons.
David Nikolic, a Milwaukee native who spent 18 years in the UW-Milwaukee program, was
named the Great Lakes Region women's assistant coach of the year by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America.
Nickolic and head coach Michael Moynihan left the Panthers last month to take the same
positions at Northwestern.
The season ended for the UW-Milwaukee and Marquette women's soccer teams against Big Ten
Conference teams Friday in North Carolina, along with the careers of two players whose
accomplishments over the past four years will be prominently featured in the NCAA Division I record
book.
Senior Sarah Hagen (Appleton North) scored on the final touch of her career, curling in a
free kick from 19 yards out in the 90th minute, but it was the only shot on goal for the
15th-ranked Panthers in their 2-1 loss to Ohio State in an NCAA tournament second-round match in
Durham, N.
