Given I only get to the ground about ten minutes before kick-off, I missed the opportunity to
buy the latest edition of Red Issue which went on sale today. Why? Because the GMP,
without receiving a single complaint, deemed the picture on the back page "potentially offensive"
so went about confiscating it and threatening the sellers with arrest.
My friends and I often indulge in extended debate on the club vs. country issue and how so far,
it's ‘OK' to support England. We eschew the jingoism, the hooliganism, the sheer repugnance of
many of those called on to sport the jersey, the overreaction to defeat and over-anticipation of
victory, the arrogance and the aggression, but still wish for a team we can support.
"Go on, touch it. I've put the safety on."Football on a Friday night? It's just not cricket.
Perhaps that was the reason for Tottenham's utterly distasteful performance at Vicarage Road as
they scraped past a plucky Watford. If you were to believe the general theme of the commentary and
post-match media reports, you'd be forgiven for thinking Spurs arrived in north west London, rudely
parked their giant team coach wherever they chose, shaped to headbutt anyone and everyone on their
way in and spend the entire game cheating and coercing the ref into allowing them victory.
For Fernando Torres, it will be a long way back to media approval. His move to Chelsea, for a
record £50m, will lead to him always being highly scrutinised and criticised for each game where
he doesn't score.
His performance against Manchester United, which included a fine goal, a number of feats of
fleeting footwork and concluded a great week for him, which included two assists against Bayer
Leverkusen on Wednesday, will be remembered for one other incident.
What are the odds Sven fails to see out the season as Leicester boss? Derek McGovern's
Bets of the Day
When is word going to leak out that Sven Goran Eriksson isn't very good at managing football
teams? For reasons beyond me, Sven is not short of offers from wealthy boards or rich broads.
Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere has reacted to Joey Barton's Twitter rant by insisting
that the Newcastle midfielder must acknowledge his own wrongdoing before blaming others involved in
the infamous incident that marred Saturday's league opener between the two clubs.

Javier Morales is the latest victim of MLS's rough play.
Chivas USA's Marcos Mondaini slid into Morales from behind and took out the RSL star. Mondaini
broke Morales' ankle and the injury required surgery and will knock him out of action for at least
four months, possibly the rest of the season.
My standard game review is coming tomorrow, but i wanted to get my comments on what happened to
Steve Zakuani down before MLS makes its ruling. This is a long post, so settle in. Anyone who
watched the game or any other MLS game this weekend has heard (or seen) what happened. In the 3rd
minute Brian Mullan went in two-footed on Steve Zakuani and got his leg, breaking the tibia and
fibula (both lower leg bones).
Jason Davis of US Soccer Players Newsletter writes of the trials and tribulations of preseason
training camps.
The weeks between the opening of Major League Soccer training camps and the start of the new
season are a metaphorical minefield of meaningless results and poorly informed conclusions.
The FA have charged Rafael da Silva for his reaction to the second yellow card Mike Dean showed
him in our 0-0 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
This was the third time we've seen such an explosive reaction from our little Brazilian. The
first game from the bench after United went 2-1 up against Spurs last season.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester City
In the pub beforehand, there wasn't a single member of our party who envisaged anything other
than a home win, and some of us thought we might get three goals (I think I went for 2-1). All I
can say in hindsight is it's a good job none of us are bookmakers by trade.
So 2010 is over. The first league game of the year saw Rosicky score a late equaliser against
Everton, the final game saw Squillaci score a late equaliser against Wigan. Oh, hang on, for Wigan.
Whoops.
After the fantastic display against Chelsea, it was always going to be a letdown that we failed
to take three points from an easier game two days later.
