New Zealand's qualification for the 2010 World Cup is the direct result of 2 actions by the
FFA. 1. The move of the Socceroos from Oceania to Asia, thereby giving New Zealand its 5th spot. Also
the '5th spot' moving from South America to Asia. 2. The A-League lifting the performance of players who otherwise would only have achieved local
experience on the small NZ scene. Click to continue reading...

Going against what this writer wanted, New Zealand became the 24th nation with a ticket for
South Africa by beating Bahrain at home. The only goal of the match was scored by Rory Fallon in
the final moments of the first-half. The first-leg of this playoff ended 0-0, which gave Bahrain
the chance of qualifying with a draw different from the nil one.
With 23 nations already qualified for World Cup 2010, there are just nine places in South Africa
still up for grabs. Three of those will be decided when African qualifying concludes next
Wednesday. But that's a separate post. The six other qualifiers will be decided by playoffs,
starting tomorrow.

Our guest this week is Lilika, a Liverpool fan living in Japan.

October has a full slate of World Cup Qualifiers on the schedule, a fact I set out in my
Octoberfest post back in September. It is time for the top teams to secure their spots in South
Africa in 2010, and it is time for the inferior squads to be sent home to start dreaming of
2014.
New Zealand did not have it all the own way in the Oceania qualifiers. The Fiji "general public"
had been demanding a good result. Roy Krishna, the Lad from Lambasa, obliged with two goals. (If only Roy's grandmother had been born
in Kilmarnock...Scotland could have been coming down the road.
It is, on paper at least, the easiest World Cup Qualifying Group in Europe and perhaps world
football, not counting the rather farcical system New Zealand need to go through in Oceania. Greece
though have retained an incredibly frustrating ability though to turn the most promising of
situations into a nightmare, Click to continue reading...
New Zealand is out of the competition after losing two games, but they will
certainly play for pride. Going out of a competition without scoring a goal is a blow to any
national team, and the All Whites will undoubtedly want to bow out on a high.
Iraq still have a chance for qualification, provided South Africa lose their
game against Spain.
Spain 1 - 0 Iraq David Villa scored the only goal of the game as Spain recorded their 14th consecutive win in
defeating Iraq in the Confederations Cup. South Africa 2 - 0 New Zealand It's a first Confederations Cup victory for the hosts, as the Oceania champions go crashing out at
the group stages. Click to continue reading...
North Korea coach Kim Jong-Hun praised his players after they overcame the searing conditions of
Riyadh to earn the goalless draw against Saudi Arabia that booked their place in the World Cup
finals for the first time since 1966.
While the North Koreans can start making their World Cup plans, Saudi Arabia have to prepare for
a play-off against Bahrain in September as they look to keep alive their hopes of a fifth
consecutive World Cup appearance.
Group 2 North Korea have become the fourth and final team from Asia to win an automatic qualification spot
for World Cup 2010. The North Koreans went into yesterday's final round of matches in Group 2 already occupying second
place behind South Korea and only needed a draw to confirm their place in South Africa next year. Click to continue reading...
(Sudafrica-N.
Click to continue reading...
Yesterday the first two games of the Confederations Cup were played. The first being a mostly
stale nil-all draw between the hosts and the Asian champions, Iraq. The real action was in the
second game between the European champions Spain and the best of Oceania since Australia joined the
Asian region, minnows New Zealand.
C'mon, as if you didn't know that Fernando Torres and co were going to shit this one in? I must
admit though, the 17 minute hat-trick was a bit of a surprise... was there actually another team
playing!? It was complete domination and the Spaniards were playing at some sort of divine pace. Click to continue reading...
It's the moment every football fan has been waiting for - the start of the 2009 Confederations Cup.

Fijian footie players are smoking that sh*t. Like really, they are all on drugs... according to 8
of 10 league presidents. This could be a good thing as it may help them get a shirt sponsorship

So the US dug themselves an early hole and then displayed some determination to eek out a win
thanks to another Landon Donovan penalty kick (with that ridiculous routine of his, he is going to
look like an idiot when he misses one) and a truly spectacular diving header from Carlos Bocanegra.
Along the way, the US failed to dominate an inferior opponent. Click to continue reading...

This time 4 years ago, we Aussies had already clinched the Oceania group and were eagerly
watching the South American qualification group. Who would we play in November? Uruguay again?
Paraguay or Columbia? It went down to the wire and history shows that we played Uruguay and showed
Reccoba that his "Divine Right" was to put his head up his arse.
New Zealand's national team of football, also called the All Whites, are arguably Oceania's most
successful football country but their record on the International stage especially is yet to reach
good standards. New Zealand participate in this year's Confederations Cup for another time,
portrayed as the team with the least chances to do any harm. Click to continue reading...
Honduras became the 12th team to qualify for the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Nigeria from Oct.
24-Nov. 15. They joined the U.S. and Mexico in representing CONCACAF, with one bid from the region
still outstanding - that will be either Guatemala or Costa Rica and we'll find out tomorrow
(Sunday). New Zealand won the Oceania bid on Friday afternoon. Click to continue reading...
Tahiti needs only a draw against New Zealand to earn Oceania's sole bid to the 2009 FIFA U-17
World Cup, which would add to an already remarkable year in which Tahiti's U-20 team has already
qualified for the U-20 World Cup.
The two teams are set to battle on Friday. If New Zealand wins, they take the bid.
Interesting article over at the World Cup Blog today, asking the question, 'If 2010 World Cup
qualifying ended today, who would make the trip to South Africa?' 32 nations will make the cut. Who would be in? Let's take a look ... CONMEBOL:
Paraguay, Brazil, Chile, Argentina
CONCACAF: USA, Costa Rica, Honduras
Playoff: Uruguay (5th place CONMEBOL) vs Mexico (4th place CONCACAF)
Five teams will represent Asia at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Two will come from group A
and two from group B. The fifth team will have a torturous set of matches between now and the World
Cup kick off over the next 12 months. The fifth spot will be filled by either a team that comes 3rd in group A or B or a team from the
Oceania group (the group the Socceroos were part of for the 2006 World Cup). Click to continue reading...
We know it's been a week or two since the most recent round of World Cup qualifiers took place, but
we never quite got round to summing up all the action from outside Europe, so here's our
