SEATTLE They say it rains but never pours in Seattle, but don't tell that to the 38,880 that basked in a deluge of Sounders goals Saturday afternoon at CenturyLink Field.
A Lamar Neagle brace paired with a brilliant Mauro Rosales strike and an opportunistic late goal from Obafemi Martins led the Seattle Sounders to a 4-0 thrashing of the San Jose Earthquakes.
Despite missing Obafemi Martins (knee), Shalrie Joseph (hamstring), Steve Zakuani (groin) and Osvaldo Alonso (birth of daughter), the Seattle Sounders certainly did not look like a depleted team early. In the tenth minute, the always explosive Eddie Johnson scored on a corner kick service from Mauro Rosales, and Seattle were up 1-0.
The Seattle Sounders hit rock bottom in last week's SBI MLS Power Rankings, but after recording their first win of the season the Sounders look poised to start their climb toward the top.
The Sounders defeated the Colorado Rapids to not only erase the zero from their win column, but also to help open the account for Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins, who scored his first Seattle goal on Saturday.
A couple of World Cup veterans were signed by Major League Soccer teams on Friday. The Seattle Sounders made the long-awaited signing of forward Obafemi Martins official. The 28-year-old Nigerian has played for Inter Milan, Newcastle United, Wolfsburg and most [...]
Former Inter and Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins has reportedly paid €3 million to buy out his contract with Levante so he can join the Seattle Sounders. Martins joined Levante in September on a free transfer and signed a two-year deal before becoming the club's leading scorer this season with seven La Liga goals in 21 appearances.
Obafemi Martins has confirmed over Twitter that he is leaving Levante and signing with the Seattle Sounders. This comes on the heels of Levante announcing that Martins had paid his exit fee and been released by the team. The last piece of the puzzle is for the Sounders to confirm the move themselves.
After a rough start to the season, Seattle Sounders supporters received some good news in the last 12 hours. Several Spanish media outlets reported Monday morning that Levante striker Obafemi Martins could join the Sounders by Tuesday with the MLS [...]

Sigi Schmid gave Softy specifics about injuries and playing status today during his near weekly show on KJR. He addressed Obafemi Martins' availability, the club's need for players being at 100% and a couple players that played themselves out of the lineup who may be reentering it as well.
On a cold, wet day after a draw/loss in Mexico and a day of rest the biggest bit of news is that Obafemi Martins returned to Starfire and was training with the team again. Several other key Sounders are still out with injury and Friday's training session will go a long way to determining who gets used in Saturday's match.
Obafemi Martins is clearly not going to play on Tuesday night in Torreon as the Seattle Sounders try to upset Santos Laguna and continue to make history in the tournament. But the team may, or may not, have the services of Eddie Johnson and Brad Evans.
"Eddie did more today," head coach Sigi Schmid said following a rainy day of training on Sunday.
Seattle Sounders FC will likely be without at least two of their four listed forwards for the match at Santos Laguna next Tuesday. Obafemi Martins is getting his knee looked at by a foreign specialist and David Estrada's eye is still healing from a non-foul incident in the RSL game. Eddie Johnson may be back for the next match.
Obafemi Martins and Eddie Johnson logged significant travel miles over the past week in order to help club and country. After today's practice session it seems likely that both will be able to feature in the two matches that are causing Sigi Schmid to juggle lineups. Mario Martinez is unlikely to start on Saturday.
In a match that will last in Seattle Sounders fans memories more for the first appearance of Obafemi Martins than the result, the result was a mere draw against Portland Timbers squad that used constant pressure and a barrage of offense to press Seattle despite being on the road. Steve Zakuani created a great opportunity in the 13th minute that Eddie Johnson slid into the goal, but the 1-nil lead would not hold the Timbers back and Rodney Wallace completed their comeback with a 91st minute game winner tying goal.
As Seattle Sounders and Portland timbers rekindle their decades old rivalry for 2013 there was much anticipation in CenturyLink for Obafemi Martins arrival. As much vitriol and familiarity between Seattle and Portland, both clubs are without key contributors from their past and are somewhat unknown to each other.

Both Sounders GM Adrian Hanauer and Coach Sigi Schmid talked briefly about the potential Designated Player signing of former Levante player Obafemi Martins when practice at Starfire wrapped up today. While neither was willing to confirm the deal, their words make the deal seem quite close to being done.
The Major League Soccer Players Union released on Monday their first list of player and team salaries in 2013, and it's not a huge surprise who is at the top of the list.
Thierry Henry of the New York Red Bulls remains the top earner in the league, bringing in a total of $4.
Don't look now, but Seattle could make a real run for MLS glory this season.
The Sounders announced in a press conference on Friday the signing of Nigerian forward Obafemi Martins, becoming the team's third Designated Player on their roster. He joins midfielders Mauro Rosales and Shalrie Joseph as the team's DP's, and bolsters an already strong Seattle attack.

"This move is consistent with our promise to the fans," Majority Owner Joe Roth said in a team release.
As you should all know by now, there's no better way to insure that Sounders news happens than for us to record a podcast. Obviously, this was recorded on Sunday, so you're welcome. We talked about Obafemi Martins like it wasn't a done deal and, lo and behold, it sure appears to be done now. Feel free to only listen to that part for entertainment purposes.
Sporting Kansas City is back at it tomorrow against the Seattle Sounders at Sporting Park in a rematch of last year's US Open Cup final. Both teams are coming into the game on short rest, Sporting at least will have not had to travel, although they'll have one less day of rest. Seattle played in Philadelphia on Saturday earning a 2-2 draw while Kansas City took care of Chivas USA 4-0.
Let's be honest, this week was a bit of a letdown. Almost literally as soon as he arrived, Obafemi Martins was gone. Eddie Johnson and Mario Martinez were away as well. Those three absences were especially felt in Saturday's loss to the San Jose Earthquakes.
That left the Sounders with an 0-2-1 record, which ties them for the worst start in franchise history.
We promised it would happen eventually and we came through: Sounders GM Adrian Hanauer joined us on the show this week. Through some technical difficulties, he shed some light on the acquisition of Obafemi Martins as well as a host of other subjects. We also tried to get to the root of what makes "House Hunters: International" so darn popular, as well as agreeing that the new host of "Property Virgins" doesn't quite do it for us.
When Seattle finally officially announced that Obafemi Martins would be joining the team, and in just a few hours with an airport media scrum, it ended a long saga. Over a period of many months, the Sounders pursued a deal with Levante and the player. In the end things were certainly not amicable, as Levante did everything they could to stop or at least delay losing the Nigerian national teamer.
It will be a tough task to wade through the layers of drama leading into this weekend's Cascadia Cup opener against the Timbers and get into the tactics.
Go on, pick a storyline.. It'll kick off the first season in the 10 year history of the Cup that Seattle will try to win it back after losing it to the Timbers.
Looks like we'll have to wait just a little longer before Obafemi Martins is officially introduced to Seattle Sounders fans. The now former Levante striker told the BBC that he's decided to get his Visa in Spain before making the trip to the United States, at which point he plans to officially sign his Seattle Sounders contract.
The Obafemi Martins-transfer saga may be finally nearing a conclusion. A few days after the Nigerian striker came down with a mysterious stomach ailment, Spanish-based media are now reporting that the Seattle Sounders are expected to pay the nearly $4 million exit clause. There's no confirmation as to that happening, yet, but the reports suggest Martins is preparing to join the the Sounders immediately.
