It wasn't a good weekend for exciting football. It was a good weekend for exciting numbers. Or
rather, a good weekend for those who can find numbers exciting.

he did so while playing for Werder Bremen.

the upcoming match against the Irish on Thursday morning (even if I am not looking forward to
getting up at 4:30am to catch it live). Pim Verbeek has picked, whether by design or need, an
extremely youthful side and hopefully some of these fringe players can get a starting run.

The 2009-10 German Bundesliga season is set to begin on Friday August 7, 2009 as Wolfsburg look
to defend the league trophy. The Bundesliga was very competitive last season with the gap between

Energie Cottbus grabbed a lifeline by securing the relegation play-off spot, but ended up having
not even close to a chance in their tie against FC Nuremberg, who beat them 5-0 on aggregate to end
all eastern German presence in the Bundesliga.

The impact of this signing cannot over emphasized. For years and years top European clubs have
shown no interest in American field players. Most European oriented American fans (eurosnobs as
they are often called) have laughed off any suggestion of an American field player playing for a

Football is a funny game - this is the sport where anything, and I mean
anything, can happen completely out of the blue. For example, no one ever imagined
that Brazilian star Ronaldinho, who was literally unstoppable not too long ago, would suddenly
become as anonymous as he is nowadays.

On September 5, 2009, the two nations will meet with first place at stake at St. Jakob-Park in

guaranteed a slot in the tournament field.

Well, the Business-Punchinellos in the Bundesliga management decided before that season that it
would be a great idea to bring back the 1991 abrogated relegation play-off games, meaning that the
16th of the Bundesliga plays the 3rd of the 2nd Bundesliga in back-to-back matches. We now get
treated with soccer-istical dainties such as Cottbus against Nuremberg.

Three matchdays to go and there is still pretty much everything to play for at the top and the
bottom of the table. A welcome change to last season, where we had to make do with a little tussle
for the UEFA Cup and Intertoto spots and Nuremberg putting up not much of a fight to avoid the
drop. This time around it could all go down to the final matchday.
