What would the NSCAA Convention be without the added excitement (and pressure) of speaking? For
the second year in a row, my good friend and peer Ryan Knapp and I presented together. Ryan and I
met in 2009 at Tweet Blowing the Whistle on Social Media and have bantered back and forth on all
things digital and social media since.
The 2012 NSCAA Convention could once again be called: The busiest week of my life. Here's the
play-by-play, through a few select photos from the camera on my iPhone. I've posted the photos in
chronological order, enjoy!
Tuesday, January 10
Arrived in Kansas City and made my way over to the Kansas City Convention Center to check things
out.
The MLS 101 series will be a "living/breathing document" in that I
will continue to edit and update these post to keep up to date with the inevitable changes that MLS
will make. I encourage you to bookmark the post so you can use them as a reference going
forward.
In this edition of MLS 101, it's time to tie up some lose ends about MLS roster rules, along
with player movement and acquisition.
As part of the 2012 NSCAA Convention, the organizers presented an hour-long interview with Jurgen
Klinsmann conducted by Allen Hopkins.
Today's du Nord post is dedicated to one of our heroes: Muhammad Ali born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr
on this day, January 17, in 1942. Happy 70th my man!
STARTERSI spent 2 great days last week in Kansas City at the NSCAA Convention, including taking in the MLS
SuperDraft.
Episode 04: Wynalda is Even Crazier Than We Thought
On this special edition, I react to Eric Wynalda's free form comedy show at today's NSCAA
Convention in Kansas City. The details of which were brought to us via Twitter thanks to Jonathan
Tannenwald. More importantly, I'm joined by Sarah Wilson who was there in person for the entire
speech and offers her reactions.
UCLA's Sydney Leroux was the top pick of the Atlanta Beat during
the 2012 WPS Draft on Friday.
Forward Sydney Leroux, who currently is training with the U.S. Women's National Team in Los Angeles
trying to make the squad for the 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament, was selected
as the top pick by the Atlanta Beat during Friday's 2012 WPS Draft at the NSCAA Convention in

The 2011 Hermann Trophy winner and ACC Offensive Player of the Year had 17 goals and eight assists
last year.
Great production value. Strong story line. If this doesn't get you pumped about an event you
normally might not get pumped about then check your pulse.
But seriously, the SuperDraft, silly name and all, is where dreams start for a lot of players in
our domestic league. Each one has the chance to make American soccer even greater.
The 2012 edition of Major League Soccer's SuperDraft is scheduled for Thursday, January 11th at the
NSCAA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Here's what you need to know in advance of the Draft.

BREAKING NEWS: The NSC Minnesota Stars will ring in 2012 with the unveiling of a new logo, designed
by our good Friend-In-Football Kevin Joseph, on Mon Jan 9 at 7:30pm at Brits Pub in downtown
Minneapolis. See you there!
STARTERSThe 2012 NSCAA Convention will take place January 11-15 in Kansas City MO.
Sometime in the summer or fall, I took down the subscription link in the header because 1) it
hadn't been used for a while, 2) it was breaking the design on the iPhone, and 3) I wasn't all that
thrilled with the work product. Since the start of the New Year, I've had a couple requests to make
donations to the site, and for me that's reason enough to put it back up.
I'm currently running for Secretary of the NSCAA. The election winner will be announced at the
annual business meeting at the NSCAA Convention in Kansas City on Friday, Jan. 13, so as we're
getting closer to the event, I thought it would be good to share my answers to the 12 questions the
NSCAA asks each candidate to file.
John Rennie, the noted men's coach at Duke University, and M. "Chick" Jacobus, the highly
successful boys coach at Kingswood School of West Hartford, Conn., will comprise the 2012 induction
class to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Hall of Fame.
The two will be inducted into the NSCAA's Hall of Fame as part of the Association's annual Awards
Banquet, to be held Friday, January 13, at 7 p.
The annual NSCAA convention just got a lot more fun with the announcement that two MISL teams, The
Comets and Wings, will play a match during the weekend long soccer convention taking place this
year in Kansas City, MS.
The MISL put out the following press release regarding the NSCAA match:
The MISL's Missouri Comets will play their annual "Retro Game" honoring the area's rich indoor
soccer history against the Wichita Wings at Sprint Center on January 14, 2012, during the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Annual Convention in Kansas City.

MLS is apparently in the business this week of releasing all their information for the drafts this
offseason. Earlier this week they announced the rules for the upcoming expansion draft for
Montreal. Now MLS has announced the rules for two more of the offseason drafts.
First the second year re-entry draft rules have been announced.
Mike Woitalla of Soccer America writes of how US coach Jurgen Klinsmann hopes to impact the US game
at the grassroots level.
Before Jurgen Klinsmann's debut as U.S. coach against Mexico, ESPN's Julie Foudy asked him,
"How would you define success over the next three years?"
It's noteworthy that Klinsmann steered his response to youth soccer:
"I define success in individual development of players.
In January at the NSCAA convention, I ran a session called "Finishing Exercises for Elite
Players." I leave it as an exercise to the reader to determine how a soccer mind as brilliant as my
own could have run out a team which produced so many embarrassing moments in front of goal.
I mean, I know the answer.
From the Evansville Courier Press, January 30, 2011
The formula for developing soccer players shouldn't be like trying to solve the Rubik's cube — it
shouldn't be a series of twisting, turning and guessing.
There is one club in the world that churns out world-class players more than any other.
By now you may have heard about how the USSF refused to sanction the NASL as the men's Division
II league in the United States in 2011. Kind of like how changing the MLS schedule is off the
table. Funny how that happens. For a truncated history of the NASL split from USL, wikipedia is as
good a place as any to bring you up to speed.
Mann Lagos
Today's guest is Manny Lagos. It's been a busy January for the former MLS and US National team
player who has now turned his attention to coaching. Lagos was first in Fort Lauderdale, FL. in
early January for the MLS Combine and while there was able to observe the US U-20 Men's National
team team train.

It's been a bit of a whirlwind since presenting, "Social Media for Coaches," at the 2011 NSCAA
Convention in Baltimore with the one and only Ryan Knapp. A huge thank you to the NSCAA Convention
Committee for inviting us to give this session, my fellow association members and convention
attendees who came to watch, and all of the folks who offered insight and ideas ahead of time.
Maurice Edu returned from injury to score the final goal as Rangers hammered Hamilton Academic
yesterday. Edu had been down since November, but he has featured regularly for the Scottish side
this season and should be the American every team scrambles to pick up.
The MLS Supplemental Draft will help teams fill out their reserve team rosters.

Check out my man Andy Thorson from Skillzys® at the Skillzys® booth #1913 at the NSCAA
convention in Baltimore that's happening right now. Yes, that orange bracelet on his right wrist
is a Believe in it® bracelet!
I mentioned Skillzys yesterday saying if you are the convention you should stop by and check
them out.
Women's Professional Soccer held it's 3rd Draft at the NSCAA Convention on January 14th in
Baltimore, MD. 900 players entered the draft with hopes of getting selected by any team. The only
problem is that this Draft was much shorter with only 4 rounds, and 24 picks overall. Unless, they
were Alex Morgan, Christen Press, Sinead Farelly, Lauren Fowlkes, or Meghan Klingenberg, the
hopeful players had about a 3% chance of getting drafted.

Major League Soccer held their 2011 SuperDraft today at the NSCAA Convention in
Baltimore, Maryland.
The expansion team Vancouver Whitecaps had the first choice overall and took 17-year-old forward
Omar Salgado which seemed to surprise everyone but the Whitecaps.
Neil Morris of the Triangle Offense reported yesterday that court documents point to the
dissolving of the Carolina RailHawks organization called Triangle Professional Sports, L.L.C.
Morris reports that the organization originally founded by Chris Economides now includes Selby
Wellman, Atlanta Silverbacks Boris Jerkunica, Bob Young and Dr.

As most of you are well aware, the MLS Super draft will be held next Thursday at the NSCAA
Convention in Baltimore, Maryland.
As always the SuperDraft is proceeded by the MLS Combine where a select number of chosen players
participate and are looked at by MLS Clubs but other lower division teams will also have
representatives there.
The University of Minnesota's Katie Bethke has been called back to the U.S.
Women's U-23 National Team for a January training camp in Carson, Calif.
Head coach Bill Irwin has called 24 players to the camp that will overlap with the full US
Women's National Team camp.
Over the last month and a half I've been trying to sleep off the depression and exhaustion I've
accumulated since who knows when. A few of the things bothering me were recent, relevant, and
tangible - the demise of the Chicago Red Stars, the Qatar World Cup fiasco, the total lack of
sunshine, the crappy writing in the soccersphere.
