Is the game up for Dean Ashton?

Soccer Pie 12 November @ 05:14 AM EST

It is starting to look as if West Ham striker Dean Ashton could be forced to retire from the game at just 25-years-old.

The former Norwich forward broke his left ankle while training with the England squad in 2006 and has been unable to recover from the injury.

Hammer boss Gianfranco Zola had this to say on his situation: "When something like this happens, it is very much personal.

‘Big Spending’ Tottenham’s transfers since summer 2008

SoccerLens 11 November @ 06:51 AM EST

Much has been made about Tottenham's spending (almost £150m on transfers in the last 16 months), which presumably pushes them above the Big Four in spending and leaves them second only to Manchester City.

On the surface, it's a lot of money for not a lot of success. However, keep in mind that this Tottenham side has also seen a lot of exits, some of them at fairly good prices too.

The FA Cup First Round – What The Papers Say

Twohundredpercent 07 November @ 05:18 AM EST

In the meantime, however, The First Round of The FA Cup started yesterday evening with three matches. The remainder, of course, are to be played over the next three days. One of the traditions of The FA Cup is the press sending one of their hacks who is probably none too happy at not being to assigned to a Premier League match to write a few words about the smaller clubs that are taking their spot in the limelight.

Weekend TV Preview: 6 - 8 November 2009

Some People are On The Pitch 06 November @ 05:55 AM EST
Friday 6th November
19:30 Leverkusen v Frankfurt, Bundesliga, ESPN
Leverkusen find themselves one point ahead at the top of the Bundesliga, but they've only beaten Frankfurt once in their last six meetings. Normally stingy in defence, they conceded two goals late on last week against Schalke, so the potential for a further wobble here is considerable. Click to continue reading...

Brighton & Hove Albion Wipe The Slade Clean

Twohundredpercent 01 November @ 06:26 PM EST

After a disappointing start to the season that sees them sitting above the League One relegation places on goal difference, Brighton & Hove Albion have parted company with their manager, Russell Slade. This in itself isn't much of a surprise, but it does provide us with a reasonable case study on the psychology of football supporters and the pressure under which clubs find themselves.

The FA Fails To Secure TV Deal For The FA Cup

Twohundredpercent 28 October @ 05:30 AM EST

The loss of Setanta Sports during the summer didn't only have knock on effects for the Premier League, although that was the story which hogged the headlines at the time. The Scottish Premier League had to negotiate a new (and reduced) deal with Sky Sports, the Blue Square Premier started the new seasons without any television coverage at all and the FA were left seeking new partners for the FA Cup.

Leeds mock Liverpool

Dirty Tackle 19 October @ 08:43 PM EST

That's Leeds goalkeeper Shane Higgs warming up with a wall of beach balls prior to Monday night's match against Norwich at Elland Road. Leeds went on to win 2-1 on an injury time goal from Jermaine Beckford, but Higgs turned out to be in no position to be laughing at others, as he was substituted after just 17 minutes for looking shaky in his first match back from injury.

Manchester City vs Gillingham

Twohundredpercent 26 September @ 09:15 AM EST

Consider this. If it hadn't been for Paul Dickov's late, late goal for Manchester City in the Division Two play-off final against Gillingham in 1999, City may have stayed where they are and Gillingham might have risen to the Premier League and been bought out by quadrillionaires from the Middle East.
