Liverpool travel to Manchester and Old Trafford to face United for the second time in two weeks
in a match that, depending on your resting heart rate, is either mildly exciting or something
that's possibly life threatening. There's as much to cover off the pitch as there is on, but for
everyone's sanity we'll try to just do the football.
Liverpool's brief road swing continues (and wraps up) tomorrow night in Wigan, with the Reds
looking to continue a bounce-back after the Fulham loss that's seen them win their last two fairly
comfortably despite relatively narrow score lines. Wigan will be in a similar spot after getting
points in four of their last five, including an away win at the Hawthorns after faltering badly at
home to Arsenal, and, in their last outing, saving a late draw against Chelsea at the DW on
Saturday.
The fourth round of the Carling Cup gets underway, and for Liverpool it means a return to the
Britannia, the site of their first league loss of the season. Stoke's body of work in the
competition is neither lengthy nor impressive, but they got past Spurs during the last round in a
match that only took nine hours, and they'll host a Liverpool side that's already won twice on the
road in the competition.
This time last year, Liverpool were in the midst of one of the most significant off-pitch events
in their recent history. It was a relatively important time for us here at the blog as well we were
around right at the start on October 5th, as things progressed throughout the day, when things
really took off late that night and into the next morning, and as the dust settled and we finally
had a clearer picture of who was actually involved.
Six matches into the season, and the discussion about where things stand from a Liverpool
perspective, both individually and collectively, is well underway. Noel's given us a couple of
great pieces already, first looking at Andy Carroll on Monday and Charlie Adam today. While both
have a titular (not like that, pervs) focus on specific individuals, both have also created
excellent conversation about these individuals' impact on the team as a whole, which, given the
changes in the side, is an interesting and, in some cases, divisive topic.
It's no secret that one of our favorite pastimes around here is drinking. Whether it's in an
attempt to cope with the punishing reality of last fall or to celebrate any or all of life's little
wonders, a nice drink is something to be enjoyed and cherished, often in large quantities. Our
regulars seem to have embraced this ethos, churning out some remarkably coherent and insightful
stuff while reportedly tipping back man's finest creation.
Two days away from the final friendly of the preseason and just over a week away from the season
opener against Sunderland, and there's plenty time for things to change in terms of personnel.
Discussion this morning (noted earlier in the week by Noel) has a deal done for Jose Enrique and
more talk about a loan deal for Joe Cole to QPR (who's apparently sold his home in Liverpool).
As a fair few mentioned yesterday, one of the residual effects of the Charlie Adam really for
real this time medical is that we can stop talking about what might actually be happening. We saw
him arriving with Kenny Dalglish, we saw him getting all checked out by Zaf Iqbal in the Melwood
training room, and soon enough we'll see him putting pen to paper.
From the official site:
Liverpool Football Club today announced they have reached agreement with Blackpool for the
transfer of Charlie Adam.
The player will now travel to Merseyside for a medical and to discuss personal terms.
And with that, as well as a fee rumored to be in the range of £8 million, it seems that one of
the summer's longest running transfer sagas is finally at an end.

Shavar Thomas and Roger Espinoza were both on the bench for their respective national teams last
night in their Group B encounter. Neither player made it into the match that Jamaica won 1-0 on a
Noel Valladares own in the 35th minute. Jamaica advanced out of Group B as the group winners and
will play the second place team out of Group C, which could be the United States.
Group B action wrapped up in Harrison, New Jersey on Monday night as Guatemala played Grenada and
Honduras faced Jamaica.
Grenada has been giving Cuba a run for its money as the whipping boy for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold
Cup, and Monday was no different as they gave up 4 goals to Guatemala while being unable to score a
goal of their own.
As if by divine intervention, my whining in the close of yesterday's post about Word Press being
the spawn of Satan is met with immediate resolution our admin servers are suddenly back to their
former glory, which means that we're close to normal service. Even if, as Noel pointed out to me
earlier, the front page is having trouble of letting go of things that happened four days ago and
our tags ("Christian Purslow is Worse Than Hitler" et al.
CARSON, Calif. – Guatemala controlled large portions of Monday's Gold Cup match against
Honduras yet were unable to test opposition ‘keeper Noel Valladares.
Los Chapines finished the match with zero shots on goal and were largely quiet on the attack
over the final half hour, hanging on for a scoreless draw in the Group B opener for both teams.
Swansea City became the first Welsh side to make the promised land of the Premier League with a
thrilling 4-2 win over Reading.
Swansea took a 3-0 lead into halftime at Wembley thanks to a double by Sinclair in the space of
two minutes and fellow winger Stephen Dobbie's fine first-time finish.
By Chris Wright
A penalty-ridden hat-trick from top-scorer Scott Sinclair (goals no. 25, 26 and 27 of the
season) proved the difference as Swansea beat Reading 4-2 in the Championship play-off final at
Wembley this afternoon to secure promotion to the top flight of English football for the first time
since 1983 becoming the first Welsh side to snare a spot in the Premier League in the process, just
eight years after the club narrowly avoided being relegated from the football league
altogether.
In other, less obvious circumstances, the ominous prediction in the banner would be something to
be proud of given how accurate it turned out to be. After a dull 0-0 draw with Hull City to close
out the 2009-2010 season, though, it was generally accepted that things couldn't continue as they
had during a disappointing follow-up to the second place finish a year before.

Liverpool fall to Villa in the final match of a rollercoaster season.
For the time being, I'm going to leave this as an open thread, as I missed almost all of the
first half and was interrupted for large spells of the second. From what I hear there wasn't much
to recap anyhow, with few chances for either side and a pace dictated by the fact that neither side
looked like they could be bothered to do much.
First, SUCCESS! I don't want to say that we were completely responsible, but I think we were
completely responsible. Liverpool v. Aston Villa, coming to Australia in all its HD glory. Brought
to you by the Liverpool Offside. Surely that's worth some sort of sponsorship deal?
And very quickly, if Noel's earlier introduction was unecessary, this reminder's overkill, so
apologies up front.
Note from nate: This is a guest post from Noel of Liverpool Offside. There will be a few guest
posts over the next two weeks, and I'll actually have some guest posts on other blogs. Plus polls.
Lots of polls. Everybody loves polls. Noel will explain, in great detail, below.Liverpool's season ending position may not be mathematically decided quite yet, but with Sunday's
loss to Spurs, the club moves into the uncomfortable position of needing to rely on others if they
are to have any chance of improving their final standing.
Liverpool head to London to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Before you get into this, there's the possibility that a Roundtable feature might go up on the
main Offside page last week they kicked it off with the Asian Cup final between Australia and
Japan, and it's basically a way to connect the bloggers from the different sites in the build-up to
matches of some consequence.
Ritchie Branagan is not only following in his father's footsteps by carving out a career as a
professional goalkeeper, but his first call-up to the Ireland Under-21 squad follows the career
path of his father Keith, who represented Ireland in goal in 1997.
Ireland Under-21 manager Noel King announced a 19 man squad, including Branagan, for the upcoming
U21 International friendly against Cyprus, which will take place on Wednesday, February 9 at the
GSZ Stadium in Larnaca.

Let's clear a few things up:
First, I've been drinking a bit. When you impregnate your wife and then ship her off to parts
unknown for a baby shower, you earn that privilege. You could also call it a "problem," prude.
The Copa Centroamericana final between Costa Rica and Honduras played out in similar fashion to
their group match at the start of the tournament, but this time with a Honduras win. Costa Rica
were actually the better team for significant periods of both matches, but couldn't convert their
dominance into goals.
Bow before our magnificence.
With December's traffic numbers for The Offside coming out just a few days ago, it turns out The
Liverpool Offside* managed to snag top spot for the third month in a row. Being December, the
overall numbers were down a touch given various holidays and the unexpected winter break that saw
the club going two weeks without a match, but apparently our five Australian readers were still
willing to stop by occasionally, for which you have our thanks.
