Ireland a place in the World Cup but I wanted to be the first to use that headline...

Here is the goal in gif format:
And here is the guilty party - the most hated man (boy) in Liverpool:
As you can see from the last gif, it's not a balloon at all, but some sort of beach ball thing.
Hence the deflection. That chavvy kid must be extremely unpopular right now.

Here in all its glory...
It's pretty bad. Fortunately for RVP he didn't get it full in the face - could've taken an eye
out. Let's hope the FA throw the book at him - I'd love a ten match ban.
More on this:
Manchester City's sensational 4-2 victory over Arsenal, maintaining their 100% winning start to
the season, was soured tonight when Arsenal's Robin van Persie accused his former team-mate,
Emmanuel Adebayor, of committing a "mindless and malicious stamp" on him.

Chelsea have been banned from signing any new players for two years after a FIFA investigation.
Full story here.
Chelsea have been banned from signing any new players until 2011, after Fifa accused them of
illegally inducing a French youth-team player to join the club in 2007.

We are constantly luading the Guardian Football Weekly podcast - and rightly so - but don't
forget about the Times' one, either. Although Phil Jupitus is an insipid host the excellent Patrick
Barclay provides consistently insightful contributions, and although a bit of a nob Gabriel
Marcotti also makes the occasional good point.

As seen on Sunday and reported here, Kevin Keegan will be ESPN's lead analyst on their Premier
League coverage this season. He joins Ray Stubbs and Guus Hiddink for the American network's
virginal attempt at English football coverage.
I would love it if he is good.

Ian Rush's comments about his struggle to adapt to Italian life whilst playing for Juventus entered
into Liverpool FC folklore long ago, but did he really say that living in Italy ‘was like living
in a foreign country'?
According to Liverpool's goal-scoring Legend, he made no such comment:
"I was set up!

There was only one Bill Shankly; he was the best manager this land has ever seen, and despite the
claims of many a Manchester United fan, his achievements will never be equalled. Benitez is not,
and never will be, the next Shanks, But could he be the next Liverpool manager to write his name
into Anfield folklore?

Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will be absolutely vital to Liverpool's FC's hopes of winning
the Premiership this season. We all know how well the two players work together, but just how
effective is the Gerrard/Torres partnership?
I have analysed every LEAGUE game Gerrard and Torres have started together since the Spaniard
joined the club in 2007.

Liverpool FC has lost out on many great players over the years, but the most regrettable missed
opportunity is arguably Danish maestro Michael Laudrup. The club had two chances to sign this
footballing magician, but failed on both occasions. Why did the club miss out and what impact would
Laudrup (theoretically) have had?

After scoring 207 goals in 7 fantastic years at Liverpool, Ian Rush left for Juventus in 1987. A
year later he was back at Anfield after finding it hard to settle in Italy. Ever since then, the
popular myth seems to be that Rushie failed at Juventus. There is, however, a difference between
failing to settle and actually failing overall, and in my view, the idea that Rush 'failed' in
Italy is totally wide of the mark.

Sir Alex Ferguson has (predictably) dismissed Liverpool's chances of winning the league this
season, believing that the main threat to Manchester United's dominance will come from Chelsea. Is
he right? In a three-part season preview, Kais-Sabir Jesani refutes Ferguson's churlish claims and
outlines why Liverpool fans have every reason to be optimistic about the season ahead.

Another underwhelming pre-season performance from Liverpool.
Liverpool's pre-season record so far is pretty wretched:
Played - 7
Won - 2
Drawn - 2
Lost - 3
With only a week to go until the new season, things definitely need to improve.

With only 3 days until the new season starts, it's good to see Fernando Torres and Albert Riera
getting into the swing of things. Both players scored against Macdonia, with Riera grabbing the
winning goal for Spain.
Pepe Reina was also in action, and the Liverpool stopper was beaten twice by Goran Pandev, who put
Macedonia into a 2-0 lead before Torres and Riera saved the day.

In a display of breathtaking unprofessionalism that is sure to concern all Liverpool fans, four of
the club's star players have been captured on camera partying on the streets of London, just days
before the start of the new league season.
With only three days before the big kick-off against Spurs, serious questions need to be asked
about whether this is the kind of behaviour is acceptable before a big game.

On the 9th April 2002, a particularly catastrophic tactical decision by Gerard Houllier robbed

Liverpool fans and the media never tire of perpetuating the idea that Liverpool are more effective
when Steven Gerrard is in the team, but is this actually the truth? It's time to get a definitive,

not struggle without Gerrard in the team.

Police have discovered a live hand-grenade outside the home of Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish.
According to a report in the Liverpool Echo, Police were alerted to the presence of two men 'acting
suspiciously' on Selworthy Road, Birkdale, at around 10.15pm last night.
The two men in question were duly arrested nearby and upon searching the scene, the police found
the live grenade on top of a garden wall outside Dalglish's home.

Over the last year, Rafael Benitez has wasted a huge chunk of the club's money on transfers that,
for whatever reason, just didn't work out. With news that Liverpool have reportedly accepted a
£4.3m bid from Napoli for left-back Andrea Dossena, this money-wasting trend seems set to
continue.
I think we can all agree that last summer was an utter disaster for Liverpool when it came to
transfers.

In this new series, I'll be taking a look at what I perceive to be some of the biggest myths

the most recent inaccuracies, namely the improbable notion that former Liverpool Chief Executive
Rick Parry signed Robbie Keane.

Kevin Keegan once described Sir Bobby Robson as one of his ‘all time favourite football
managers', and I'm sure that many Liverpool fans also have a soft-spot for Robson, a true legend of
the game, who sadly passed away today.
A thoroughly decent man, Sir Bobby shared many of the same personal qualities as Bill Shankly and
Bob Paisley and remained unaffected by the shallow excesses of modern football.

One of the biggest recurring myths about Liverpool FC is that the team struggles without Steven
Gerrard in the side. The tabloid media are notorious for perpetuating this blatantly false myth,

Of all the players in all the world, why does Rafa Benitez seem intent on gambling a reputed £20m
of the club's money on an injury prone midfielder who has barely managed 27 league starts in the

Alberto Aquilani, and Rafa Benitez was very complimentary indeed:

Near the end of last season, Fernando Torres stated that winning the Champions League is more
important than winning the league title. Sacrilege, surely? Whilst Torres is perfectly entitled to

"Domestic titles are very important but to win the Champions League you are saying we are the best
team in Europe.
