Whilst skimming the business section of the Times of London this morning (because that's what
baller-assed suits such as myself do in between Powerpoint presentations and breakfasts of
California Condor eggs over easy) I accidentally spit mimosa all over my keyboard when I read the
following about the alleged recent purchase of the New York Cosmos name by former Tottenham
Vice-Chairman Paul Kemsley:
"Pele will be president of the company.

There were two big New York soccer rumors reported in the media this past week. The first was
that Pele may be recruited by newly minted New York Cosmos owner Paul Kemsley to serve as President
of the organization, which he intends to build into a lifestyle brand as well as a football club.Â
The second is that David Beckham is eyeing New York, Miami or Montreal as the location in which to
exercise his right to start a new MLS franchise.

I realize that the last official football match to take place at Giants Stadium was almost two
weeks ago between the Red Bulls and Toronto FC, but I still figured I'd throw my two cents in on
what was once a football mecca in this country. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking
about the Meadowlands is very mixed feelings.

As I mentioned on Monday with the release of our latest podcast, we are making some exciting
changes at MLS Talk. One of these changes will be our new "Legends of MLS" series on both our
podcast and website. Often times, MLS History is unknown or hardly written for the new fan. We seek
to bridge a gap in understanding and recognition of certain players, coaches and clubs.

fans, particularly those old enough to remember the New York Cosmos, for the New York Red Bulls the
end could not have come soon enough.

So long, farewell &Â good bye. This coming Saturday, October 24th will officially be the very
last time that this club (MetroStars & Red Bull NY) in the NYC metropolitan area & US Soccer will
call home. This famed stadium named after the NFL team that plays their pointy ball seasons also
shares it with the other football league in the American first division.

Colin Jose, the preeminent historian of the sport in North America joins us on the podcast. This
show is a must listen for anyone interested in the evolution of the game in North America. Soccer
history in the US/Canada did not begin in the late 1980s, and the sport is not a new one in this
part of the world, as has been argued by some.

Growing up playing soccer in the United States is both a blessing and a curse. Most of us became
fans of the most popular sport in the entire world, yet in the United States the sport has a third
tier status that receives only a fraction of coverage and attention of the major sports in the US.
I am old enough to remember the rise and fall of the North American Soccer League.

Take a good look at that crest ladies and gentleman. We all remember it fondly as this was the
most famous name in all of football during the era of the North American Soccer League (NASL). We
remember the movie about the history of the New York Cosmos and how popular they were once famed
Brazilian International Striker Pele came to these shores and created a major buzz over in Downing
Stadium at Randalls Island (Which was torn down and rebuilt as Icahn Stadium), Hofstra University,
the first Yankee Stadium and finally calling Giants Stadium home at the Meadowlands in the late
70's thru the mid 80's.

The New York Cosmos are back! The legendary name had been more or less in mothballs for years
under the control of G. Peppe Pinton, long rumoured to have been asking for extravagant payment for
the trademark. And given what a circus the team was at times (even if this wasn't always a bad
thing), it's perhaps appropriate (if rather sad) that the trademark of the team has been purchased
and will apparently be used for a reborn Cosmos as "a traveling array of all-stars, playing matches
around the world.

Alex Yannis was the New York Cosmos beat writer for the New York Times during a great time in
American soccer, chronicling the exploits of Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and Giorgio Chinaglia in the
1970's.
Despite being a child of the 70's and growing up a devout Cosmos fan, I was also a neighbor of

You really should read this. It's a bit long --in a good way-- so you might want to save it for
