During the past five seasons, Manchester United's full-time left-back/part-time captain/wannabe
winger has played more minutes than any other outfield player. Now though, the effects of all

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted his regret at selling Ryan Shawcross to
Stoke four years ago, conceding that the decision to offload the promising center-half was down to
a preference to develop Gerard Pique at Old Trafford.
Pique has since returned to native Barcelona, leaving Fergie frustrated at the manner in which
Shawcross had to depart United.
It has been a scrappy season for defending Premier League champions Manchester United but in
dealing with a plethora of injuries, the club has certainly benefited from the consistency of
Michael Carrick, which has not gone unnoticed.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has backed the 30-year old midfielder to continue his terrific run
even as the Red Devils prepare to welcome returning playmakers Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley.
Phil Jones was subbed off after 20 minutes in Manchester United's 2-1 victory over Arsenal,
needing a stretcher to take him off the field. Reports from the touchline suggested he had just
twisted his ankle but the following day there were claims he had ligament damage.
However, Mike Phelan has given us hope that Jones could be available for our FA Cup clash at
Anfield.
Manchester City's crosstown rivals and English Premiership title contenders Manchester United
could also do with a transfer signing. Nemanja Vidic, the club captain and lynchpin of the
Manchester United defence, is out for the rest of the season. Rio Ferdinand, the former England
captain and one of the best defenders in the club's history, continuously suffers from niggling
injuries and his participation is never certain until the match begins.
Arsenal come to their match with United battered and listing badly
Thomas Vermaelen is a last minute decision, Thierry Henry has a "calf" problem, and Mikel Arteta
will definitely sit out the match. A full starting squad is out with injuries, yes, there are
eleven out. The most in the Premiership.
It's interesting to see that, despite all our complaints, that we've only bettered our current
points total on 21 games on just one occasion in recent years, back in 2006/2007. Even if you
didn't take in to account the fact our injury list has been far worse than our title rivals,
Manchester City, to be three points off the top at this stage in the season is a good position to
be in.
With the debate over Manchester United's first-team goalkeeper raging ferociously, this author
steps back and lets the statistics do the talking. Bereft of self confidence and devoid of
regular...

"Rooney and Vida In FIFA World XI" was originally published at The

At this point only World Cup success eludes him. But Leo Messi has done enough to earn himself a

Messi beat out Cristiano Ronaldo, the Liga's top scorer last season, and his Barca team mate
Xavi.
Lionel Messi won the FIFA Balon d'OR for the second consecutive time after the inception of the
award last year. With this victory he has won the FIFA World Player of Year and Balon d'Or for the
third consecutive time. It was a no btainer from the time the three man shortlist was
announced.
Lionel Messi was voted World Player of the Year for the third year in a row with Cristiano
Ronaldo and Xavi a distant second and third respectively. Barcelona's Pep Guardiola won the manager

Messi captured the Ballon d'Or for the third consecutive year, beating out Cristiano Ronaldo and

1. Back to back defeats for Manchester United now against teams we should not be losing to.
Blackburn have been woeful this season and Newcastle have had a pretty poor record at home. We are
of course missing important players like Nemanja Vidic and Tom Cleverley but that isn't a good
enough excuse for not getting the wake up call we should have had after the Blackburn result.
After witnessing Manchester United defeat against Blackburn Rovers for our New Year's Eve match, I
would touch on another significant matter to the football world, the opening of the transfer
window....

Sir Alex Ferguson Stand
Ahead of kick-off against Sunderland, the game we were celebrating Sir Alex Ferguon's 25th year in
charge, David Gill claimed we would be marking the occasion in a historic and unprecedented way. I
thought getting the manager to say a few words before kick-off was hardly worth the build up Gill
was giving it, but whatever.
The end of the year is here, and it's time for you to draw up your own Player XI list! Who has
made your starting line-up? Here's Futbolita's Team of 2011, including our six substitutes (because
you never know who could get injured from all that paella or partying!) We've also included the
super Robin van Persie, Kun Aguero, and Nemanja Vidic in our team.
As most people around the world, unwrapped their Christmas gifts and opened the boxes to see what
is in store for them, there was a big box awaiting Manchester United at Old Trafford, the Theatre

Manchester United's week has gone from bad to worse.
After being eliminated from the UEFA Champions League in the group stage, United got word Friday
that centerback Nemanja Vidic will miss the remainder of the season after suffering ligament damage
in his right knee.
Vidic suffered the injury at the end of the first half of United's UCL finale against FC Basel
Wednesday while battling Marco Streller for the ball.

Are Manchester United in crisis or is this just a blip? Hear from Robbie savge on why Fergie's
side have become "wormanlike" and hear what happened in the aftermath of Nemanja Vidic's injury and
the shock Champions League exit to Basel from our Manchester correspondent David McDonnell.
More bad news for Man United as Nemanja Vidic's agent says the United captain has ruptured
cruciate knee ligaments. Sir Alex Ferguson said after the game his captain had suffered ligament
damage, but hoped the damage was not too serious.
However, speaking to the Italian website www.calciomercato.
Nemanja Vidic left the stadium on crutches last night following our 2-1 defeat at the hands of
FC Basel and his agent, Silvano Martina, has today confirmed the severity of the injury.
"It seems inappropriate to talk about that, because unfortunately he has suffered a ruptured
cruciate ligament.

Terrible night for Manchester United and City as both clubs crashed out of the Champions League
tonight.
The bigger shock was Man United losing 2-1 to Basel on a night that saw United captain Nemanja
Vidic carried off with a bad knee injury.
United only needed a draw to progress but went behind after only nine minutes when Marco
Streller fired home after Xherdan Shaqiri's cross was kicked out by David De Gea.

While Manchester City are in one of the toughest Champions League groups in recent memory, their
performances have shown that while money may be able to buy domestic success, European pedigree is
a priceless commodity.
Just ask Roman Abramovich. He and Jose Mourinho brought Premier League titles and FA Cups to
Stamford Bridge almost immediately after the Russian oligarch pumped many millions into the club,
but the Champions League title remains elusive to this day.
Nemanja Vidic has talked about his role as a defender but claims he isn't a murderer, as his
song would have you believe.
"I am not a number 10, I know that," said Vidic. "I am defender and I have to stop
the other team from scoring the goal. If I play well but make one mistake, than all anyone
remembers is the goal I conceded.
