PSP makes the case for why 5 refs are better than 3 (and goal-line technology). Yes, we're using common sense again, in a way that no one else seems to be, because unlike Europe, we actually have other successful team sports to draw upon for examples. Also, a few quick hits on the Union.
Major League Soccer is a growing league, and in many ways, it's still in the awkward teenage stage of its development. This is neither good nor bad inherently; just an honest assessment of the league. One big example of this is our fascination with something that major sports in this country typically take for granted: television coverage.
File this one under what could potentially be a cool thing.
According to CaptialNewYork.com, Major League Soccer has hired a design company to carry out the plans of designing a new stadium in Queens.SHoP Architects, the firm that designed the new NBA Nets stadium in downtown Brooklyn, will prepare initial designs for a Major League Soccer stadiumFlushing Meadows Corona Park.
There has been a lot of talk about Merritt Paulson and affecting the team. People have compared
him to Paul Allen and other more hands-on owners. I don't think the comparison to Paul Allen is
apt, as there are a lot of differences between Paul and MP -- I would say MP is the Mark Cuban of
MLS.
Mark Cuban, as many of us know, is the owner of the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA.
This is another step in the right direction for D.C. United and one that will certainly help get
their stadium situation sorted out in a hurry.
ESPN Soccer's Marc Stein is reporting that the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers minority owners Erick
Thohir and Jason Levien are set to become new co-owners of D.
It's been a busy sports weekend with the 2012 Euro competition beginning Friday, the Heat winning
the NBA Eastern Conference final, the New Jersey Devils denying the LA Kings in the NHL finals, MLB
interleague play, World Cup qualifiers going on everywhere but Europe, the French Open, MLS, USL
PRO and PDL soccer matches going [.
The Miami Heat are working towards quite a feat in trying to break the record for most consecutive wins this season. The record of 33 games was set by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers.
If they get the record and win this year's championship, the Heat will undoubtedly be recognized as one of the greatest teams in NBA history.
Nike was quick on the draw with a new LeBron James commercial after he won his first
championship. This LeBron James commercial is called "The Ring Maker" and is actually really good.
Scroll down and watch the video below.
In this LeBron James commercial, there is a ring maker who watches LeBron grow from a high
school phenom into a powerhouse in the NBA.
While I know a lot of NBA experts are expecting the New York Knicks to give the Miami Heat a run
for their money in the first round, I just don't see it. The Heat are just too good. LeBron James
is the best player in the league and Dwyane Wade always shows up in the playoffs. The Knicks,
meanwhile, are a gimmick team that depends on one-on-one play.
Presenting pretend Liverpool fan/minority shareholder and NBA supermercenary
LeBron James' new Nike '9 Low Liverpool' basketball trainers but can you spot the ever-so-subtle
error (aside from them being hideous) in the various Liverpool-themed livery?
The big news of the week has been the worldwide soccer corruption scandal touching everything from division three matches to National Team fixtures. Not even the Champions League was spared. In even worse news, UEFA's warnings over club spending doesn't seem to be getting through, as football teams around Europe are posting record losses.
By J Hutcherson - WASHINGTON, DC (July 31, 2012) US Soccer Players – Well, of course the National
Basketball Association is "interested" in following soccer's example with the Olympics. Numerous
reports have the NBA pushing their sport's international governing body to go the route of FIFA and
the International Olympic Committee.
Lamar Odom was a bust with the Dallas Mavericks. He never seemed to adjust to leaving Los
Angeles. While the Lakers are reportedly interested in him, the team making the biggest push for
Odom is the Clippers. With the Clippers needing a bigman who can space the court, Odom looks like a
perfect fit.
NBA and Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki came out to enjoy the FC Dallas game June 23rd against
Chivas USA. Dirk, being German, is not surprisingly a big soccer fan. Click the article to check
out this little video made by the FCD PR crew of the former Champ's visit.
As it stands now, each NBA playoff team has an idea of who they play in the next round.
Some teams are still battling in the first round, but the second round matchups are set up in a firm tournament format. The one seed plays the winner of the 4-5 seed matchup, while the two seed plays the winner of the 3-6 winner.
30-Somethings are dominating the NBA these days. They're everywhere, making their presence felt in crunchtime.
Almost every team in the 2013 playoffs has at least one 30 year-old plus player making a difference:
Ray Allen, Dwyane Wade, Udonis Haslem, Chris Anderson, Shane Battier/Miami Heat, Jason Kidd, Pablo Prigioni/New York Knicks, Kevin Garnett, Jason Terry, Paul Pierce/ Boston Celtics, Kirk Hinrich, Carlos Boozer/Chicago Bulls, Chauncey Billups/LA Clippers, Tayshaun Prince/Memphis Grizzlies, Kyle Korver/Atlanta Hawks, Andre Miller/Denver Nuggets, Nick Collison/OKC Thunder, Pau Gasol, Antawn Jamison/LA Lakers and Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan, Matt Bonner, Tony Parker/San Antonio Spurs.
The trade deadline came and went Thursday. There were rumors of Al Jefferson, Josh Smith and J.J. Redick on their way to the Spurs. But, none of it came to fruition. More than likely, the rumors were just that, rumors.
It looks like Spurs management is pretty satisfied with the roster.
The names of the starting lineups (starting 5) and head coaches are announced before the tip to every NBA game. It is a custom that has been part of the NBA for a very long time, possibly since its inception.
Next year will see Portland field a new top-level sports team. It might not be as big as the NBA or even MLS, but it's an important step in the city's sports legacy regardless. The fact that many of our nation's World Cup champions and Olympic gold medalists will be playing for the team and in the league, in general, should at least help to spur some interest.
There's a kind of sadness to getting crushed in leg one, in that you can not just forget about it. This is not a series ala the NBA, MLB or NHL where the total score matters not. Every single goal in that drubbing will stick with Sounders fans and buoy Galaxy fans.
In other relatively tight cap leagues it isn't the performance of the top player in the league that determines success. Nor is it the bench or subs. Take the NBA where every team has enough space to have two great players, but need to convince their third best to take a major salary cut, or they drafted very well, or they use other cap techniques to even further weaken the bench.
Why were the Nets so active during the NBA offseason? Not because the franchise wanted to make a good first impression on its new neighbors in Brooklyn. No, the team just wanted to make sure we got used to writing Brooklyn Nets enough in the summer that we wouldn't slip and call them the New Jersey Nets as we gear up for the season.
NBA's 2011 Most Valuable Player Point-Guard Derrick Rose became only the second Chicago Bull's player to receive NBA's most coveted MVP award in 2011, after Michael Jordan.
And like Jordan before him Rose has his very own signature shoe much like the Air Jordan's, only Rose;s latest signature basketball shoe is aptly named the 3 rose 3 designed by Adidas and available to Pre-Order for $160 with the release date scheduled for October 4.
Some stunning statistics here. 10% of Americans are avid soccer fans first and foremost (NFL: 25%, NBA: 14.4%, MLB: 19.9%). The researcher projects global soccer to grow 3-4 times bigger than it is now, and MLS's fanbase to triple, all within a generation. Most importantly?
Image: NBA Photoshops via ESPN.com. The van Persie family is officially headed north for McMansions

confident they'll let the Dutch international know when they travel to Old Trafford on 3 November
and again when their former captain returns to [.
llamadas o correos.
How do you play starting swingman/small forward on the best team in the NBA and not get more
consideration for Rookie of the Year? The vote for this year's ROY proves it's just a political
exercise to try and make stars.
Two point guards were ahead of Kawhi Leonard, Ricky Rubio of Minnesota got second place and Kyrie
Irving of Cleveland won the award.
Today word came out from Peter Vermes and Sporting KC that the team has decided not to appeal the
red card against Roger Espinoza in KC's 2-1 loss to Chicago. Vermes said that they decided not to
appeal for "many reasons." Certainly one of those reasons is probably the word frivolous. If the
disciplinary committee deems an appeal frivolous, they can double the suspension.
The top 3 NBA free-throw shooters of all-time are white guys, Steve Nash, Mark Price and Rick
Barry. Five of the top 10 overall are white, with Larry Bird and Scott Skiles as part of the list.
Many people would consider Peja Stojakovic as white; he is also in the top 10.
