A new youth soccer tournament created by the merger of the Chesterfield United Icebreaker and the
Kickers Invitational, The Ultimate Cup tournament features a Girls and Boys weekend, scheduled to
launch February 24-26, 2012 and March 2-4, 2012. Applications are available; click here for the

The age-old debate about playing on natural grass versus an artifical surface doesn't seem to be as
controversial as it was 10-years ago.
A large part of that may be with the new technological advances in the new field turf, as well as
the large growth of artificial fields all over the United States.
The 2011 version of the NVSC Battlefield Tournament will take place October 8th and 9th. The
official list of accepted teams was released yesterday and can be seen on their tournament
website.

When the Atlanta Silverbacks announced their return to professional soccer last November, many
challenges faced the dormant franchise. After not fielding a team for two seasons, the Silverbacks
had to start from scratch in almost every aspect of building a professional sports team.
It's been a while since our last look at stadium construction around MLS. We'll start in
Houston, where the Dynamo's efforts to build in downtown Houston has progressed far enough to
warrant a webcam. The Dynamo are expected to contribute $60 million to the project. The proposed
stadium will be shared with Texas Southern Football and other local events.
The U.S. was drawn into Group D of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, and will play its group games in
Torreon and Pachuca. Before the young Americans have a chance to explore, here is a bit of
background about the city of Torreon and Estadio Corona.
Torreon
Torreon, nestled in what used to be a lake bed in north central Mexico,
is about 250 miles due south of Big Bend National Park in Texas.

extensive camp program offers the perfect spring/summer activity for soccer players of all ages and
abilities.
Time for our first stadium update of 2011. We'll start in Houston, where last week we reported
that the team will break ground on the project on January 29. That date has since been delayed to
an uncertain date, but the team is maintaining that the building will be ready in time for an April
2012 opening.
A common complaint of players who play on "play on plastic" is that they feel much more tired
compared to playing on natural grass. In fact, a study reviewed here (link) found that many players
have a negative perception of artificial turf. They feel that turf is was more physically taxing
and more technically demanding.
