2011 was a pretty incredible years in a lot of ways. Here are a few of my impressions:

My beloved Minnesota Stars won the re-inaugural NASL championship! I know most of you don't follow
the 2nd division of soccer in North America, but it was a great year for many of the teams. The
play on the field was arguably the best ever, and when your team goes on one hell of run and
eventually wins it all, there is nothing better!
Last week we gave you our our take on the top business stories in the world of American
soccer. Now it's time for you to cast your vote. Don't agree with our options? Vote "other"
and drop a line in the comment space with your choice. If you want our take on the five
finalists, read the summaries below the poll.
Kasey Keller Wins MLS Moment of Year
His final regular season game (also Date with Sounder at Heart Day) won nearly 50% of the vote.
The TA singing the national anthem came in at 31% and the Galaxy winning MLS Cup at 19%. There's
clearly some rounding.
He's big. He's tall. He's a ____ wall.
Over the next couple of days (and in no particular order), we will present the top American
soccer business stories of the year. Early next week we will conduct a vote to see which of the
entrants you think is the winner. We'll start with two entrants today, one in Portland and the
other in Kansas City.
Trevor James, an assistant coach for the Portland Timbers during the 2011 season has officially
departed from the team's technical staff today. Those of you who were with us during this past
pre-season will remember that he had spent the previous 5 years as an assistant coach and director
with the LA Galaxy, which means he brought a lot of experience from one of MLS's best teams to the
Timbers, unfortunately for us.
The chief of the Royal Grenadian Police Band was immediately relieved of his duties. His musical
troupe had made a major diplomatic gaffe: at the grand opening ceremony for the Caribbean island
nation's rebuilt national cricket stadium, they had played the National Anthem of the Republic of
China, to the considerable discomfort of the dignitaries present who hailed not from the Republic
of China (Taiwan) but from the People's Republic of China.
Sing it, Damien Fulham winger Damien Duff didn't get a copy of the memo passed around the Republic
of Ireland camp today that said they were not doing their sideways national anthem routine ahead of
this evening's Euro 2012 qualification play-off against Estonia. Conveniently positioned at the end
of the line-up and with his eyes [.
Japan lost 1-0 to North Korea in their WCQ, their first defeat of the campaign, but it was the
events off the field that will be remembered more than what happened on it.
Arriving in Pyongyang the Japanese team were kept waiting four hours while immigration and customs
did their shit while ahead of the game their national anthem was roundly booed by the reported
50,000 crowd.
FELIZ terça-feira! Brazil defeated Egypt 2-0 last
night and Jonas netted in both goals for Mano's men ("quão legaaal" for
the Valenciano!) By all accounts, the selecao were expected to win this match anyway and
despite all his attempts, Hulk wasn't able to score from any of his best chances upfront.
WIN a Remembrance Day anthem jacket worn by England at the Spain match
England's players honoured British servicemen and women by wearing special kit embossed with
poppies. And one lucky reader can win an special jacket worn by one of the England players during
the national anthem before the victory against Spain.
Ireland assistant boss Marco Tardelli has told Ireland's players they could be preparing for the
most important games of their lives as they attempt to book a trip to the Euro 2012 finals in
Poland & Ukraine next summer.
Ireland face Estonia in a two-legged play-off over the next seven days with a place at next
summer's tournament at stake.

As we wrote last week, it is the time of year when votes are cast in Major League Soccer for
MVP, Defender of the Year, Coach of the Year and more. This is the third year that
Footiebusiness.com has been a voter, but the first year that a Team PR Award isn't among the
offerings. However, whether official or not, we thought it worth casting our vote for the 2011
Team PR.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - When U.S. men's national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann revealed his
starting lineup to his players, Danny Williams was in shock.
Williams, the 22-year-old son of an American serviceman and German mother, was included in the
starting XI that would take on Honduras at Sun Life Stadium on Saturday night, something that may
not have even seemed possible just a month ago.
Dealing as I am with the untimely loss of my laptop due to the motherboard melting down, i just
have time to note that:
*The Galaxy plays the Colorado Rapids tonight in Carson (live at 8 o'clock on Fox Soccer

There was something oddly consuming about the dullness of today's France-Romania European
Qualifying match. It was played in Bucharest, in front of a packed and energized crowd of Romanian
fans, who understood that this was probably the pivotal moment in the country's attempt to get to
the European Cup next year.
The New England Revolution will be remembering the ten-year anniversary of the horrific
terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001 with a "Salute To Heroes" series of events during their
home match against FC Dallas on Saturday. The club has distributed over 3500 tickets to men and
women in the US Armed Services for the match, and you can join them by clicking the "Tickets" tab
on the red navigation bar above.

I think that Messi has been the most talked topic in the world of the game for the past one week.
His pale performance, his tears, lack of Charisma, Messi is not Maradona, Messi is too exhausted,
Messi was pressured more than he should, ..............., and the most ridiculous of all of them
was: "Messi is not too loyal, Messi didn't sing the national anthem"
What I liked most from all what I heard or read about Argentina or Messi in the past two weeks, is
his father Jorge comments:
"People criticise Leo for not singing the national anthem but they forget that he turned down
the chance to play for Spain.
Editor's Note: This is probably one of the only personal bits you'll see on this site.
The Free Beer Movement isn't about me, but about, you, the collective American soccer fans that
help build this sport one beer at a time. Yesterday's USWNT win, though, moved me to put into words
the "love story" I've had with the Lady Nats.
It's a holiday weekend here in the States, so I've been enjoying it, relaxing. But here is a little
something in honor of the holiday:
England players look a little resentful while singing their national anthem. I don't think they
were expecting as much criticism as they got for their draw against Mexico.

England Women got their World Cup campaign underway with a slightly disappointing 1-1 draw
against Mexico in Wolfsburg yesterday afternoon going ahead through Fara Williams' looping
21st-minute header before being pegged back just 13 minutes on down the line thanks to a bit of a
special effort from Monica Ocampo.
This week was a busy one for the Revs as they hosted two home games against Eastern Conference
foes. Although the Revs only picked up 2 out of a possible 6 points, at least the Bruins won,
right? Also, I learned things about America.
The Revs had a two game home-stand this week starting with Toronto FC on Wednesday night.
Capping off a week in Kansas City the Free Beer Movement took in the last of the first round Gold
Cup games where surprisingly the U.S. National Team found itself in a "put-up-or-shut-up" match
against the tiny island nation of Guadeloupe.
For the U.S. supporters group, the American Outlaws KC became the site of the closest ever Nats

At the grand old age of 37 (though we'd swear that he's been 37 for at least the last five
years) and after scoring a million goals in a thousand appearances over two spells at the club,
Boca Juniors' veteran striker Martin Palermo played his last ever game at La Bombonera at the
weekend.

As we have discussed over the last two weeks FOX broadcast the Champions League Final for the
second straight year. The Nielsen ratings are out and the network scored a 1.8 overnight. This
represents a significant increase over the final from last year. The 2010 Final achieved were not
nearly as good as expected, with the match scoring a 1.

I attended the April 30 Philadelphia Union game against the San Jose Earthquakes with my friend
Frances who is a resident of Chester. It was great to see how excited she was to be at a game, and
she is definitely looking forward to attending another. This was highlight of the game for me, but
being a verbose blogger, I will also note the following:
Photo Credit: Free Beer MovementOn April 14, 2011 the Portland Timbers made their smashing Major
League Soccer debut. The American soccer world was blown away at the sights and sounds of the
league's newest members. A renovated stadium, a supporters-fueled National Anthem, and a team that
brought home a victory for the home fans.
By Cesar Diaz – NEW YORK, NY (Apr 29, 2011) US Soccer Players -- Playing their first home game of
the 2011 MLS season on Thursday, April 14th, the Portland Timbers and their fans served noticed to
every MLS team that winning a match at JELD-WEN Field is going to be extremely difficult. From the
beginning until the end, it was all Portland.
Political website Drudge Report has adopted a photo of the River End as its front page
photograph.
With an American flag, and a Sons of Ben one as well, being waved amongst the smoke, the Drudge
Report possibly chose the photo to tie into the site's current headline of "Age Of America
Ends.
Incredible scenes from Portland Timber's long-awaited home opener. The Timbers Army (our first
supporters group feature) arrived early and was in full voice for their singing of the National
Anthem.
The match itself was no let down. The Timbers opened the scoring early and piled on to a 3-0 lead
only to see their opponents, the Chicago Fire climb back to 3-2.
In case you missed it last night, Portland Timbers fans sang one of the better renditions of the
National Anthem you'll hear, celebrating their team's first MLS home match in grand fashion.
Enjoy:
