The Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) hosted their annual Winter Coaching Symposium
Saturday at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Around 500 coaches from around the state of
Minnesota and MYSA affiliates attended the symposium. The theme for this year's symposium was
"Innovate; Elevate; Motive.

Ian Barker has been a star in soccer coaching education here in the United States, and yesterday
was offered the ultimate opportunity in that arena when he was selected as the Director of Coaching
Education for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
"Ian is the perfect choice to lead the NSCAA's coaching education program to new heights," said
Cummings.

I know the routine well. You plan and train all winter just waiting for the weather to get nice
enough to get outside and start training on real grass. But some years, like this past spring, the

The Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaches Association is holding their 21st annual
soccer clinic on Friday, August 12th, at Hopkins High School, 7:30 AM until 4:00 PM.
The clinic has continues to get better every year with some of Minnesota's best coaches and
several national recognized coaches as well, all putting on sessions.

Minnesota had two teams that made it through the US Youth Soccer Region II Midwest Regionals and
qualify for the Nationals in Phoenix, Arizona. Both the boys U-16 Minnesota Thunder Elite Academy
and the girls U-19 Woodbury Inferno competed in that tournament last week but neither team
qualified for the final.
Minnesota had two teams that made it through the US Youth Soccer Region II Midwest Regionals and
qualify for the Nationals in Phoenix, Arizona. Both the boys U-16 Minnesota Thunder Elite Academy
and the girls U-19 Woodbury Inferno competed in that tournament last week but neither team
qualified for the final.
Glendale Falcons, Austin Hart
The 2011 Region 2 Boys Camps are being held in Overland Park, KS this week. The Camps bring in the
State teams from Region 2 offering age group competition between the teams and leading to what is
termed the Holdover Camp where individual players are invited to stay and participate on a Regional
level squad.
Ortega - Hawkins - Henry - Opfer, Springfield SC 95-96
Springfield Soccer Club has announced that a trio of their players have been added to the Missouri
State ODP squad. Nicole Ortega (Catholic HS), Kasey Opfer (Glendale HS) and Aspen Hawkins (Central
HS) (Alternate) have made the 95 Girls ODP State team.
Only 3 of Minnesota's 13 teams that participated in this years 2011 US Youth Soccer Midwest
Regionals in Fox Cities, Wis., made it to the finals. They were the boys U-16 Minnesota
Thunder Elite Academy, the girls U-17 Minnesota Thunder Academy East
and the girls U-19 Woodbury Inferno.
The Hanifl Fields Athletic Park in Hugo, Minnesota has now officially opened and is being used
by both the White Bear Soccer and the Mahtomedi Soccer Association. According to an interesting
article in Twin Cities.com, the park is located at 137th Street North next to the city's public
works building.
The 2011 Missouri State Cup will be held June 11 16, 2011 in St. Louis, MO at the SLYSA and
Sportport complexes. The Missouri State Cup is the first leg of the US Youth National Championship
Series. All age groups (Under 13 up to Under 19) will participate June 11th 16th. The 2012 Girls
State Cup will be played in the Fall later this year as MYSA separates the tournaments by
gender.

The long cold winter turned into the long cold and wet spring of 2011. It not only pushed back
the flowers from blooming and the trees from leafing out, it has also effected the Minnesota Youth
Soccer Association's State Cup. Because of weather delays many of the semi-finals and all of the
finals have been pushed back to this weekend.

The two state-wide competitions have registration deadlines quickly approaching. Last year one
Girls team (Missouri Elite FC U14 Girls) competed along with two Boys programs Springfield SC and
Total Demize in State Cup. Will your team compete?
The alternate choice is the President's Cup which offers a lower tier of competition but the
result is still an opportunity to move on to Regional competition and even a National
tournament.
Steve Bellis
Steve Bellis, a name familiar to many soccer households in Minnesota, has been named Head Coach
for the Division II women's soccer team at Concorida College in St. Paul, MN.
The Manchester, England native has served as Director of Coaching and Player Development for
Wings Soccer Club (1998-2007) and spent two seasons as Academy of Holy Angels Head Girls Soccer
Coach.
