Scottish Premier League Match Predictions 11 February 2012 - The 90th Minute Soccer Blog
A week away from the blog.
I'd like to explain my absence with exciting tales of derring do. But I can't. The most excitement
I got was watching Hibs beat Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup, nailbiting to the end.
No, I've been away largely because I couldn't be arsed for the last week.
Today's SPL. All of our dirty dozen are in action. Here's a very quick look ahead.
St Mirren v Celtic
Ah, St Mirren. 2-1 up last week with their opponents down to ten men. They lost 5-2.
A season in 90 minutes. The promise, the impressive moments, the entertainment and the frequent
disappointments.
A January weekend to cast off the shackles of league pressure and revel in the romance of what is,
at this stage, the most egalitarian of our competitions.
A Scottish Cup weekend. Breathe in the fresh air of potential shocks and brace yourself butchers,
bakers and candlestick makers making SPL defences look like part-time amateurs.
Maurice Edu picked up an assist as Rangers put three past Motherwell while Dominic Cervi and
Greenock Morton came from behind in Scottish action.
Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic has been linked with a move to England for a couple of months now,
and latest developments seem to suggest that a move down south could be imminent.Jelavic was left
out of the Rangers starting line-up for yesterday's clash with Motherwell, which is strange given
the fact he's featured in practically every game this season.
Day eleven. Guided by a star of wonder, the SPL Advent takes a trip to Perth.
Perhaps we should all read a Christmas lesson from the good book of McDiarmid Park.
St Johnstone have lost both a talented young manager and a steady, long-serving chairman this
season.
And, so far, it's been more evolution for revolution.
Day nine of the SPL Advent. Motherwell, the success story of the season so far.
What were we to expect from Motherwell this SPL season?
Stuart McCall's arrival to replace Craig Brown raised more of a shrug of the shoulders than a cheer
last season.
But he impressed in taking the team to the Scottish Cup final, an achievement that raised
intriguing possibilities about how he'd fare with a close season behind him.

Hitting the halfway stage of the SPL Advent calendar. Another annus horribilis for Hibs.
Even those well versed in the grimness of the SPL might have been taken aback by the sheer scale of
the despair Hibs have engendered amongst the faithful this season.
If appointing Colin Calderwood was a mistake it was an exponential error, compounded by every
signing he was allowed to make and every show of support the board made.
Today's SPL Advent calendar throws up not a nugget of cheap chocolate but a Stewart's bridie -
current SPL basement dwellers Dunfermline.
The road to the SPL is not paved with gold.
On their return to the top flight Dunfermline find themselves bottom of the league. They've taken
only four points at home in a miserable run that has seen them fail to win at East End Park.
Is that a tangerine in your stocking or are you just pleased to see me? Through the great SPL
Advent calendar window today: Dundee United.
Consistency, as Motherwell's progress this season has shown, can work wonders in the SPL.
But it eludes three quarters of the league.

Day two of our Scottish football Advent calendar. Celtic lurk behind today's window.
Was it really just a few weeks ago that all hope was lost and Neil Lennon's job prospects looked
bleaker by the match?
Celtic teetered as Rangers thrived, the SPL gap was getting bigger and the Parkhead title challenge
was being written off.
It seems like ages since I tickled the malnourished belly of the SPL with a wildly inaccurate
prediction post.
I think the last time I Nostradamus-ed the weekend action Rangers had won the title and Motherwell
were about to take the Champion's League by storm.
What a difference an eight point swing makes.
To Motherwell and part two of the great SPL Friday night football experiment.
Pity poor Motherwell. If you want to try something (sort of) new and attract the punters with cheap
tickets it's probably essential that you get ninety minutes played.
Unfortunately this Friday night project was abbreviated.

Pat Fenlon finds himself in the Hibernian trenches for the first time this evening.
Another SPL Friday night experiment as Hibs take a trip to Motherwell.
Perhaps I'm guilty of misreading his intent but my impression was that Henry McLeish had suggested
Friday night football as a way of reinvigorating the lower leagues.
Agog today for the SPL's biggest game since the last big game.
Motherwell v Celtic.
If you'd said in July that third placed Celtic would need a November win to move ahead of second
placed Motherwell on goal difference we probably wouldn't have believed you.
But such seismic events often only need the collision of one or two factors.

It seems club programmes in the SPL might be about to endure a rather brutal re-invention.
The league, in its new found spirit of consultation, is canvassing opinion on the future of
individual club programmes.
The endgame might see the disappearance of programmes as we know them and the advent of a
league-wide SPL matchday magazine.
David Moyes has clinched the signing of James McFadden on a free transfer, boosting Everton's
creativity. The Scot is no stranger to Goodison Park, having made 109 appearances for the
Toffees.
Since his release from the relegated Birmingham City, McFadden has been training with clubs
throughout England, including Mick McCarthy's Wolverhampton Wanderers side.
David Stockdale started and made 11 saves in Ipswich Town's 2-2 draw at
Cardiff on Saturday. On October 1 he started and made 7 saves in Ipswich's 3-1 win over
Brighton.
Bjorn Helge Riise did not dress in Portmouth's 2-0 win over Barnsley on
Saturday. He started and played 45 minutes in Portsmouth's 1-0 loss at Leeds on October 1.
Building up to this week's final round of group qualifying fixtures for the 2012 European
Championships, BBC Radio Scotland has produced short audio pastiches daily on their
Sportsound programme featuring new interviews with former Scottish national team players
along with rebroadcasting some audio caught in the moment after some big matches.

probe that also saw Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings nicked at his home earlier this
morning.

Just what's being going wrong at Hibs? What is the point of Paulo Sergio?
There was a decidedly American flavor to Glasgow Rangers' 4-0 rout of Motherwell on Saturday, as
U.S. teammates Carlos Bocanegra and Maurice Edu both scored goals for the Scottish champions.
Bocanegra opened the scoring in the ninth minute on a powerful header, while Edu blasted a
long-range left-footed shot in the 17th minute.
A tortuous night following Hibs' league cup win against Motherwell from afar.
They got there in the end, the dramatic cruelty of the penalty shoot-out and all that.
The "real" Hibs, said a relieved Colin Calderwood. But they were minutes away from another
defeat.
Cometh the approaching final whistle, cometh the man.
The story of a £2.8m tax liability (over)due for payment by Rangers Football Club ought to be a
straightforward one. Either the club owes the money or it doesn't. And it says it does. However, if
Rangers FC does owe the money, and publicly admits as much, yet still does not pay it, there must
be a problem with their ability to do so.
