Africa Cup of Nations 2012 Team of the Round, Matchday 1 is a post from: Just Football

We have seen 15 goals in 8 opening games of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, with some fascinating fixtures and a few hints as to how the tournament might unfold. Only one game was separated by more than one goal, co-hosts Gabon beating Niger 2-0, while there have been no heavy defeats for any of the less-fancied teams, with the likes of Sudan and Botswana, and even Niger to an extent, more than holding their own against continental powerhouses like Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana.

In the spirit of the 125 anniversary celebrations, and in a follow up to Darren's recent blog about Arsenal's history, I now ask the question of whether the current team is the most multicultural team in history. I wasn't the first one to notice it, but we've recently used a couple of different lineups where every player hailed from a different country.

Champagne, bags of bank notes and Adidas balls: these were amongst the gifts Macedonian Blagoje Vidinić received during his African odyssey in the early 1970s.

This was a man who presided over the joint-worst World Cup performance of all time, but also a man who as a goalkeeper had once rivaled Lev Yashin in many eyes, who had played in Los Angeles, San Diego, St Louis in a pioneering era of American soccer; a man who as coach took two African countries to unprecedented heights and managed to change the course of world sporting history, by tipping off Horst Dassler just in time for the Adidas head to back the right man in the 1974 FIFA presidential election.

Morocco will host both the 2013 and 2014 FIFA Club World Cups.
Iran, South Africa and the U.A.E. all withdrew their bids, leaving FIFA to bring the competition to Africa for the first time. The hosting is set to be rubber-stamped in Zurich in December.
The North African nation has a strong soccer tradition, and the national team memorably became the first African nation to win a group in the World Cup Finals, topping England, Portugal and Poland at Mexico '86, before losing to a late Lothar Matthaus goal from eventual finalists West Germany in the next round.

Some very funny recent stuff, if you have not seen them yet,
The penalty by Al-Ahly from Egypt. Al-Ahli was winning 4-0 anyhow, and the ref gave him a yellow card assuming the player mocked the keeper. I don't think he meant it, it seems a pure accident.
Somehow the funny penalties are linked to Arab teams.
