D.C. United scratched their way back to a playoff berth only to see a stoppage time red card and
subsequent penalty conversion relegate United to cheerleaders for other results. United's 2-2 draw
was in many ways a capsule of their frustrating season as their destiny was in their hands and yet
again it slipped away.

D.C. United coughed up yet another lead and allowed the previously winless on the road San Jose
Earthquakes to come into RFK and take away a potential playoff killing win over the Black and Red.
United has now lost two consecutive home matches after going the first 11 matches of the season
without allowing a loss.

DC United has 2 goals in their match against Marathon in the CONCACAF Champions League match at
RFK Stadium. Those goals? They need to score 2 goals and win for a chance to continue in the
Champions League. Sounds simple right? Take a look at DC and their goal scoring opportunities as of
late.
The last goal that DC scored in the run of play was an Emilio goal in their 2-1 loss to Seattle
during MLS league play on Sept 12.

D.C. United got a rare road win and toughed out a 1-0 win in Chicago to improve the teams chances
at gaining the MLS playoffs. United had not won in over four months on the road and perhaps this
newfound confidence will spur the Black and Red from this point forward.

D.C. United's defensive effort was unquestioned in their 0-0 draw with the Galaxy last night at RFK
Stadium. Offenisvely though it was a different story as the Black and Red struggled to carve out
opportunities.

Me quedo con el de Arturo Alvarez, el último. Se necesita mucha técnica para manejar la pelota
como lo hizo. Además, definió a lo Romario: con la punta del pie. Notable.
MenciĂłn honrosa para el de Conde. Puro huevo para ganar por arriba.
Y tú, con cuál te quedas?

It's so rare to have a trade that affects every single facet of the team: from goalkeeper to the
attack to the draft. And you just get the feeling that this is one of those moments that we'll look
back on and say whether it made or broke the season.
When Colorado and DC made a trade last offseason, you can't really say that either team won on that
deal, because both missed the playoffs.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but with Ownership's threats against Dave Kasper and Tom
Soehn if the team fails to perform in 2009, it appears that they may have gone and sacrificed the
future in favor of one last chance to shine. The truth is, I reckon there is greater than a 50%
chance that Christian Gomez, Jaime Moreno, and Ben Olsen will all retire following this season.

With all the lineup changes and the tinkering we've seen in the first four matches of the 2009
season, I figured this would be a good time to bring back an old favorite feature from 2008.
This matchup pits a grizzled veteran against a rookie for the withdrawn forward role, lining up
next to Emilio.

As promised, this is the first of a new recurring feature here at the DCUMD blog. In the NFL,
coaches and analysts often divide the season into four quarters when discussing how their team is
doing. For example, the Redskins were a good 3-1 in the first quarter of their season, but finished
1-3 in their fourth quarter.

I've been pretty busy with house additions and family functions the past couple weeks, so without
the capability to DVR matches that frustatingly are not on television, my reactions to these past
two matches are coming only from video highlights and the written opinions of other fans, bloggers,

I'm having a real hard time figuring out how to feel about this tie. The ending kind of makes it
feel like a win. I can tell you with certainty that that was the loudest I've yelled at my tv this
year with Benny scoring a goal in extra time. But apparently the recurring theme of the season to
date is earning ties against teams that we are better than.

DC United looked like the better team for all 90 minutes tonight, but the first 60 sure were scary.
Even though they had threatened to score so many times, and it seemed hard to believe that they
would end the night with a bagel, it was hard not to be nervous about witnessing another lost point
or 3.

What an incredible contrast from the previous match. Even though they both ended in ties, this was
a much more inspired DC United club, playing against a much more inspired opponent. The match
against Kansas City earlier in the week saw two offensive subs (Gomez and Emilio) enter the match
and have no impact.
