TAM, Affiliation, and Expansion Draft

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
There's been a few stories of note since Friday, so we'll go through them all in one post.

First, the league announced $1.2 million in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) each of the next two years. They also announced that each team could self-fund an additional $2.8 million in TAM each of the next two years.

Goodbye Drew And Thanks!

Today the rumors were made official. Drew Moor is no longer a Rapid. The last remaining player from the 2010 MLs Cup team has signed with Toronto FC. Two weeks ago the Rapids declined his option and under the new CBA that made Moor a free agent (28 years old or older with 8 years in MLS). He had offers from multiple clubs but last week signs started pointing heavily towards him heading north of the border to Toronto and the Reds finalized the deal today.

Moor Done For Season, O'Neill Likely Done As Well

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
The worst possible news today about Moor's knee injury, a torn ACL that ended his season. Moor has been the most consistent player on the team this year (and for the last couple of years) and there's no good replacement for him. This is a huge loss that all but ends the season.

To add injury to injury, Chris Bianchi tweeted this today:
Looks like O'Neill's done.

Odds And Ends

A couple of "real" news items and a couple of fun items today.

The big one, the Rapids signed Austrian defender Thomas Piermayr today. He'll be eligible to play right away. Piermayr is a 24-year old outside back (both right and left) and can apparently play in the midfield as well. This is probably an indicator that Burch's injury will make him unavailable in Vancouver on Saturday and Pablo may be considering the Austrian to fill in since Klute is also still injured.

All-Star Voting Started Today

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
The Rapids have 6 players on the All-Star ballots that were released today. Clint Irwin, Drew Moor, Atiba Harris, Dillon Powers, Edson Buddle, and Deshorn Brown. Normally I don't really care about the All-Star Game, its great for those players who deserve it but the game is usually not interesting to me, This year though the ASG is on July 31st in Kansas City.

Akpan Traded, Calderon Injured, Moor Suspended

View From The Couch at related • 1 view
Three bits of new today from Commerce City.

  • Andre Akpan was traded to NYRB for a conditional 2015 draft pick
    • Not a bad trade, I think Akpan's role as the young forward had been supplanted by both Tony Cascio and DeShorn Brown. We're a little thin on bodies at the moment though!

Trade Official, Rapids Get Draft Pick

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
Here's the official announcement, the Rapids get a conditional draft pick from Chicago in exchange for Wells Thompson.

There's a good deal of consternation in the on-line Rapids fanbase about wells asking to be traded to find playing time, but it doesn't bother me. Look at what's happened this season:

*Wells was on pace for 727 minutes this year, his lowest season total of his career.

Slower, Lower, Weaker

More of the same. Not really going to review the game because if you saw any league match in July you saw this game.
My key to the game was the Rapids figuring out how to win. Not yet.
Other Observations:
  • The first Sounders goal we just got beat on. It was a corner kick and Johnson did a good job of getting his man (Wynne it looks like) caught in traffic so EJ could have a free header.

Colorado Outplayed By DC

Horrible play, two complete debacles on defense, and only two shots on target. An almost forgettable game that almost doesn't deserve a review, but I wanted to highlight the two goals as they really show the disaster of our defense last night.

On the first goal Neal was allowed to bring the ball a good 50 yards into the Rapids end with no pressure.

Rapids cruise past nine-man FC Dallas

When FC Dallas started Sunday's match against the Colorado Rapids, they were already facing the prospect of trying to win without Brek Shea, sidelined by turf toe. Two red cards later, Dallas' task went from difficult to impossible.

First-half red cards to Daniel Hernandez and Blas Perez gave the visiting Rapids a two-man edge.

MLS Cup 2010 Rematch

Need I say more? ;)

A quick turnaround from our trip to Boston sends us to Dallas tomorrow for a rematch of our MLS Cup victory. As good as the Rapids have been in Dallas in the postseason they've struggled in the regular season. With this being the 3rd game in 8 days we'll probably see some tired legs.

Time For Mullan To Face The Music

The Ivar's Dog, you'll have to go across the street from CLink to Safeco to get it though

Colorado is in my hometown of Seattle this week to face the neon-green Sounders. Seattle has been a bit of a house of horrors for the Rapids. Over the last 3 years we've lost all 3 games at Qwest/CLink, being outscored 9-4 and the less said about the U.

Day Late and A Dollar Short

View From The Couch at related • 0 views

The title refers to the Rapids performance in SLC, but it could just as easily refer to me as a heavy work schedule this week has me getting this post up a day later than normal. The Rocky Mountain Cup game was a disaster for the Rapids and the 2-0 was generous towards them. I'm going to dispense with the normal review and just hit the "highlights" of the two goals.

Rapids Get First Preseason Win

Colorado faced Chivas USA in a scrimmage at the HDC today. A late Qunicy Amarikwa goal from a Steven Emory assist gave the burgundy boys a 1-0 win. Of course its preseason so its meaningless but wins are always better than losses. The starting XI (trialists makred with a *):

Angulo* - Cummings - MullanLarentowicz - Castrillon - MastroeniZapata* - Marshall - Wynne - KimuraPickens
After subs the team finished with the the following lineup:

Cascio - Amarikwa - AkpanThompson - LaBauex - EmoryFreeman - Palguta - Guido* - AbabioJoyce
Guido is a local player playing with the team while they're in California.

Turmoil In The Front Office/All-Time Team Recap

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
I was just going to do a recap of my All-Time Team tonight but the Denver Post had an interesting article about tension in the Rapids Front Office this afternoon. It seems that Gary Smith is happy to sign a new contract for next year, but not if he has to continue to work with Technical Director Paul Bravo.

Dark Day Ends With A Loss

View From The Couch at related • 1 view
Obviously the post game focus has been on the Mullan-Zakuani incident. I covered that in length yesterday so I won't say any more about it other than correct red card to Mullan doomed the Rapids in the game. Playing a man down for 87 minutes is too much to overcome.
I thought Colorado actually had the better play most of the game but that was partially because Seattle got an early goal.

International Rapids

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
An interesting discussion came up on BigSoccer this week about how the Red Bulls have started a lineup of 11 players from 11 different countries. So I decided to take a look at the Rapids roster to see how close I could come. I can come up with a Rapids lineup of 11 players who have eligibility for 11 different national teams, but one has already passed on it.

2011 Season Preview

View From The Couch at related • 2 views

This year starts on a much better note than the last 3 years. Before our first kick of 2011 we'll be raising our 2010 Champions banner (I assume)! That's a much better place to be than on a 3-year playoff drought like last year. With the added CONCACAF Champions League games the Rapids have a full schedule this year.

Marshall Returns to The Rapids

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
In today's Re-Entry draft the Rapids selected Tyrone Marshall, who's option was not picked up by the Sounders. Marshall is a Jamaican defender who's been in the league since 1998. In fact, he was originally drafter by Colorado and played 1 game for them before being traded to Miami for David Vaudreuil (who, despite what the announcers like to claim about Brian Ching, was really the first MLS player born in Hawai'i).

Season Review - Defenders

Continuing our review with the guys in the back.

Kosuke Kimura - A contender for the most improved player in 2010 and the clear winner for the most passionate player on the team. Koz did not get off to a good start this season, almost immediately being replaced in the starting xI when Wynne was acquired and having a string of average-to-poor games that really kept him from reclaiming the starting spot.

What a game! Highs, lows, and what just happened! moments all over the place. I'm going to dispense with the normal post-game recap as I'm assuming anyone who's reading this has a least watched the highlights if not the whole game, and I'm not sure if I could really recap everything anyway.

Western Conference Final: Rapids vs. Earthquakes (Match Night Commentary)

The Colorado Rapids will look to move a step closer to a first MLS Cup Final victory with a won tonight at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in the Eastern Conference final against the San Jose Earthquakes (9pm, Fox Soccer Channel).

A cold and snowy atmosphere awaits the two Western Conference clubs, with the Rapids considered the favorites at home, but the Earthquakes have already shown an ability to triumph in a hostile environment.

Union Get Omared

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
Hey Philly? Your team might be a bit too interested in the Michael Vick - Kevin Kolb saga because they've apparently never heard of this guy Omar Cummings that the Rapids have. That's surprising considering Union player Jordan Harvey played here in Colorado with Omar last year. Despite that the Union didn't seem to even know he as on the field, as they left him unmarked in front of goal twice in the first 20 minutes and Cummings made them paying, staking the Rapids a 2-0 lead on their way to a 4-1 win last night.

Local Boy Makes Good For The Rapids

The Rapids game in Philadelphia ended much like Howe's Philadelphia campaign did, after gaining the advantage early on it ended in a draw and nothing really gained. Another 90 minutes of futile attack, one lone moment of brilliance for a gaol, and another failed attempt to hold a 1-0 lead led to a 1-1 draw for Colorado.

Do Or Die Time At The Dick

View From The Couch at related • 1 view
Stealing a line from our opponents area of the country the Rapids face what's pretty close to a must win game tomorrow at the Dick. San Jose is in town and both teams are battling for the last playoff spots. Game time is back to a more normal 7pm. The Supporters Group tailgate stats at an early time of 4pm due to the homebrew challenge.

Rapids Try To Salve The Burn

View From The Couch at related • 0 views
OK, so they're FC Dallas now, but they'll always be the Burn. The Rapids are back home with a 6 game winless streak and a opponent that they like to see in the playoffs. Game time is an unusual 2pm at the Dick, so the tailgate starts at noon.

Injury Report:OUT: MF Ciaran O'Brien (L hip sprain); FW Ross Schunk (R ACL tear);PROBABLE: DF Julien Baudet (L knee strain), FWD Conor Casey (scalp laceration)
Discipline Report:TWO CAUTIONS FROM SUSPENSION: Conor Casey, Omar Cummings, Pablo Mastroeni
Dallas only has two players injured and heavyweight Dario Sala suspended (again) so they're close to full strength.

I could see how that could be misinterpreted.
