Portugal might have needed the final playoff round to qualify for Euro 2012, but its latest performance put the rest of the field on notice that it can still live up to its reputation as a world powerhouse.

After being held to a scoreless draw in the first leg of its playoff with Bosnia & Herzegovina, Portugal exploded for six goals in a 6-2 rout in the home leg on Tuesday.

Well I enjoyed a nice little layoff over the last week and a half, or however long it's been since I wrote something. I wasn't out of town, but did have more real work to do than normal. Kudos to Darren for doing the heavy lifting over the last week.

Anyway, we've been treated to another round of mostly meaningless internationals in the last few days.

After the first leg of the Euro 2012 play-offs, there were a wide variety of results to compare and analyze before the second leg on Tuesday. Some ties already look finished, while some are still very much alive.

We take a look at one thing we learned from each match.

A 3-0 demolition of Turkey reaffirms that despite missing out on the World Cup, Croatia are still a team with enough quality and talent to win the European Championships.

Fabio Capello's England have experienced some miserable results in the past year or so, such as the humiliating 4-1 defeat to Germany and the disappointing draws to Switzerland and Montenegro. For a national side that is so steeped in history and success, scorelines from certain matches haven't matched the players' unquestionable ability.

Euro 2012 qualifying began in August 2010, with 51 nations vying to be part of next Juneís tournament in Poland and Ukraine. Of course, only about half of those teams entered with realistic hopes of qualifying or making the playoffs, and less than half of those teams have a legitimate chance to make a serious run at the title.

Liverpool's European Cup winning captain Tommy Smith has criticised Manchester United Striker Wayne Rooney over his stupid red card against Montenegro in a recent European Championship qualifier.
In his column for the Liverpool Echo, Smith - who was (amazingly) sent off only once in 638 games for Liverpool - suggested that Rooney needs to grow up:
