Landon Donovan was named the 2009 MLS Most Valuable Player on Thursday, and while it is tough to
argue against awarding the U.S. national team star for his performance this season, the MVP results
still raised a glaring question.
What about Shalrie Joseph?
It isn't a question so much about choosing between Joseph and Donovan, which is a subjective
debate that has supporters on both sides.

The MLS playoffs resume on Friday with the Western Conference final, but the playoffs are
already over for the four teams eliminated this past weekend. How those teams respond to their
first-round exits, and how they deal with very important off-seasons, will determine if they are
back in the post-season in 2010.

Standing on a rooftop overlooking the site of the Philadelphia Union's future stadium, I
couldn't help but see the pieces being put into place for a club that should help revitalize soccer
on the East Coast.
As cranes lowered ten-ton cement blocks into place to piece together the Union's stadium, you
could stand inside the unfinished building and see the vision.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto was being counted on to help his Columbus Crew climb out of the one-goal
deficit it faced after a Game One defeat to Real Salt Lake, and he did just that with two
first-half goals in Thursday night's Game Two. Unfortunately for the Crew, the normally stout
defense it was counting on to pitch a shutout delivered a mistake-filled performance that has
helped put an end to Columbus' quest for a repeat.

As their defense of the MLS Cup hits the postseason, Columbus Crew and head coach Robert
Warzycha are still waiting on the injury status of Chad Marshall. The Crew's defender of the year
has been missing in action since spraining his left knee in practice on September 15. While there
was no reason to rush him back from the injury as Columbus secured their second consecutive
Supporters' Shield, it looks like he will be ready to make his first start since the injury on
Saturday night.

It's all going well for the Columbus Crew at the moment. After their stumbling start to 2009,
things have long been smoothed out as the team clinched a playoff spot after the weekend's

Deportivo Saprissa tonight (8pm, FSC), which would lock up second place in Group C and advance them
through to the Champions League quarterfinals.

Heading into the fourth round of CONCACAF Champions League and the leaders are separating
themselves from the pack. Nowhere is this more evident than Group C, where Columbus and Cruz Azul
have a small lead ahead of the bottom two teams in the group, Saprissa and Puerto Rico.Â
With the way the standings are set, the winner of tonight's match is in the driver's seat to at
least snag one of the top two spots in the group and advance to the quarterfinals.
