Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 Newcastle United FA Cup 29th January 2012
Oh how Newcastle boss Alan Pardew must be counting down the hours 'til his double dose of
Dembas, Ba and Papiss Cisse, return to the north-east of England.
Those were surely the words of Wenger prior to the game on Sunday. United could be considered lucky
in this eventual deserved victory. Several blatant misses from Arsenal, including a six yard sitter
from Van Persie, portrayed a thoroughly open game that was genuinely anyone's for the taking from
the outset.

We're not gonna do this. Not right now. Just go read the Blackburn recap. Or the Swansea recap.
Or any other match in which Liverpool never really looked like doing something worth watching,
subtract any chances that were created but not taken, punch yourself in the face for watching the
whole thing, and then go back to drinking yourself into oblivion.
Sigi Schmid refers to his central midfielders as the engine room. Whether these players are
glamorous playmakers, defensive stalwarts or a box-to-box man who gets ignored or pilloried by fans
these are players who make or break seasons. For Seattle Sounders FC the center includes a player
who many will claim is their best, the Honey Badger.

Early in the first half Brisbane had crazy misses. Besart found himself clear twice. The first time
he fell over. The second he took too long. Then Issey failed to take his chance.
Then Newcastle settled into their 3-4-3 formation with Ruben Zadkovich outpacing Erik Paaratlu,
Broich having his quietest half of football ever with a few well timed elbows in the head from
Kasey Wehrman, and Newcastle playmaker Ryan Griffiths occasionally looking dangerous.

Video highlights and reaction Match Report By the numbers
There is a tendency these days to over-hype every little thing as something special but what we
saw yesterday ... well, that was extraordinary. At the end the Arsenal players celebrated as if
they'd won a trophy. Normally I'd be cynical about that, it being only one game after all, but not
yesterday.
Darren Fletcher has flown out to Liechtenstein after making a remarkable recovery from a bout of
tonsillitis.
The midfielder, who is also in the latest Man United football bowling video, had been expected
to miss his country's crucial Euro 2012 qualifiers after being taken ill and had been left out of
the original squad.

What a game of football that was. Astonishing, really.
That being said, it's likely to be remembered more for the misses than the goals themselves.
There were plenty to go around. How that match remained goalless over the final 45 or so minutes is
something that will never be understood, at least in this household.
Staying Put: Ten Expected Summer Transfers That Weren't - originally posted on
Soccerlens.com
For every confirmed transfer in any given summer transfer window, there's another ten that fall
short of completion or being remotely plausible. That's the way it seems, at least.
Even with the misses in mind, a lot and I mean a lot of money changes hands every summer, as
players notable and not leave for new pastures, some greener and some not.

The Bandinis 2011: An utterly exhaustive review of the Serie A season.
There are many things that will be remembered about the 2010-2011 Serie A season, both fondly
and infamously. Of course, people will remember Milan's Scudetto and Bari's relegation, Inter and
Roma's thrashings in the Champions' League and Napoli's dramatic late goals. Here's a series that
focuses on some of the other things that should be remembered about a fantastic season, full of
both the bizarre and the unbelievable.
In the 3rd minute of tonight's MLS match between the Colorado Rapids and Seattle Sounders, Brian
Mullan offered Steve Zakuani an ugly challenge that sent one to the locker room and the other to
the hospital. The pop is loud and clear and Zakuani's leg immediately goes to mush. Reports are
that he fractured both his tibia and fibula and will require immediate surgery.
Last week I took a look at correlations between first half and second half rates of various
statistics for MLS players to help explore the question of whether the rates were primarily driven
by player skill or other factors. The upshot was that shot rate is pretty well correlated, but both
accuracy (shots on goal / shots) and conversion (goals / shots on goal) were all over the place,
indicating that factors other than player skill (which we'll call 'randomness') dominate those
rates.
The Los Angeles Galaxy went into Tuesday night's MLS season opener against Seattle missing three
key starters, but that didn't stop the defending Supporters Shield holders from getting off to a
winning start.
Brazilian midfielder Juninho blasted the lone goal of the night from long distance to give the
Galaxy a 1-0 victory against the Seattle Sounders on Tuesday night at Qwest Field.
Blue is the colour, and blogging is the game. On 10th March 2011 five devoted Chelsea fans launched
a new website to share their love for CFC. The idea of a football fan site is not new, but Miss SW6
is a bit different from the rest; it's run entirely by women.
Co-founders Danielle, Annely, Amanda, Jaymee and Liz spent much of the last year discussing
football online and bonding over their mutual support for Chelsea.
The Comets looked good for long periods last night against the Wave, but couldn't hold the lead
when they needed to and fell to the Milwaukee Wave 17-16. The Wave were the more adventurous team
early in the quarter and found themselves deservedly up 2-0 as Marcio Leite fired a ball to the
back post that Hewerton chested into the net as he was unmarked.
Another weekend in Serie A full of interesting results. Probably the biggest result was Udinese
defeating Inter 3-1 at home. Recently, Udinese has been lauded in the Italian media as playing the
best calcio in Italy, and they are confirming that more and more as the weeks pass (I wrote about
how great a club Udinese is back in 2008, give it a read if interested).
