Saturday's 1–1 draw in San Jose put Kansas City in first place in the East with 45 points. With the opportunity to overtake them and gain a one point advantage, the Philadelphia Union were unable to prevent Juan Pablo Angel's 90th minute header and had to settle for a 1–1 draw and second place in the standings with 44 points.

CARSON, Calif. – The Philadelphia Union were just a few seconds of regulation and a few minutes of overtime from regaining the hold on first place they lost during the summer, but before they could even celebrate it, Juan Pablo Angel stepped in to spoil the party.

Usually we write something amusing here. Lately, our purple prose preamble has been little more than a device to divert your attention from the fact that the Women's World Cup and Copa America haven't kept us to the level of excitement we demand here.

England Women got their World Cup campaign underway with a slightly disappointing 1-1 draw against Mexico in Wolfsburg yesterday afternoon going ahead through Fara Williams' looping 21st-minute header before being pegged back just 13 minutes on down the line thanks to a bit of a special effort from Monica Ocampo.

For the right to advance to the Finals, the US will have to avenge a group stage defeat to Panama.
