I'm sure you have all heard of the "Canary Test".

In 19th century coal mining there were no automated ventilation systems, leaving the pit workers at risk of perishing from toxic gases.

So they used to bring a caged canary down to the coalface with them. Canaries are especially sensitive to carbon monoxide and methane and would keel over dead soon after inhaling them.

As we dip our toes into the crowded holiday slate of games in the English Premier League, it's fairly clear the powers running the league figure that the players have the same super-human, tireless, work ethic as the elves in Santa's workshop. The slight irony here, is that in the early days of football in England the players were drawn from the working class.

The Offside: Manchester United at related • 0 views

This is directly from Jim White's article over at the Telegraph. It elicited a good laugh when I read it.

In reference to the Chilean miners who had visited and stayed to watch the United Arsenal game yesterday:

"The joke doing the rounds before kick off was that, while in Manchester, Manchester United's special guests had been offered the opportunity to look round City's trophy room.

Wenger blames pitch for Arsenal's defeat

"The pitch was so poor in my opinion and the game suffered a lot from it," he said. "I ask you, 'Do you want a good pitch or a bad pitch?' What do you say?"

There you have it. In order to protect his team, Wenger's rationalizations for Arsenal's continued defeats against their peers now border on the very absurd or the very petty.

Man Utd regain the lead.

There was great joy among the trapped Chilean miners - mainly because they were no longer trapped and also because they had this big reception on Monday night at Old Trafford whey they got to meet Fergie and Rooney and things.
No such joy for Arsenal at the same venue. They experienced that familiar sinking feeling and sank to a 1 - 0 loss.
