United goalkeeper Milos Kocic and midfielder Ben Olsen took in the Washington Wizards-Miami Heat
game last night at the Verizon Center. Unfortunately, the Wizards lost 93-89 despite Gilbert
Arenas' 32 points.

Okay, so first things first...the MLS HQ troglodytes should be ashamed of themselves. Fining Payne
$5k for criticizing other teams' style of play? Shameful...and predictable. Also predictable?
Payne's apology. But what to make of this bit of...

That's what I heard at the end of the DC United vs Chivas USA match. I made the trip up to RFK
Stadium and took in the 2-0 loss in person. It is time to give up on this season and start to look
at changes for next season. The first 2 changes are find a new goalkeeper and a new head coach.
Josh Wicks is looking at a suspension by the US Soccer Federation from his actions during the US
Open Cup final.

This was clearly a match between two teams going in different directions. Chivas was starting guys
like Maicon Santos, Jesus Padilla, and Yamith Cuesta - all who joined the team in August and have
already claimed starting jobs. They haven't been afraid to bench their veterans like Razov,
Galindo, and Marsch and have instead sought out better players.

DC United comes off its 2-1 loss to San Jose to win 5-1 against San Juan Jabloteh. And what do
you know...the youth played a huge factor in this with the help of Christian Gomez and Fred.
Scoring for UNited was Gomez (13′,68′), Fred (30′), Khumalo (43′, 92+'). They key in this
match was how well the youth wokred together for this win.

Last week I made a big mistake in reading too much into the results of a win against a weak
opponent. Learning my lesson, let's just say that this match was a pleasure to watch. This is the
second time this season United has scored five goals, and it looked like the boys were having fun
out there.
Does that mean though that they will carry this momentum into the match Saturday against Chivas?

This weekend had set itself up really nicely for DC United. After losses by Seattle and RSL, and
ties by Colorado, Chivas, and Toronto, DC United only needed a home victory against the worst road
team in the leauge in order to move into 5th place. But the underdogs continued to impress. Not
only did United lose, but they really deserved to lose.

Just a couple of things on my mind today, so... U-20's Bounce Back The USA U20's recovered from
dropping their opener in the U-20 World Cup, a 3-0 loss to Germany, by routing Cameroon 4-1. Of
course, the final score was terribly flattering to...

As some have heard at this point, Josh Wicks is going to be out 4-6 weeks because of a
dislocated shoulder and torn MCL. Milos Kocic is the next in line for goalkeeper. Bill Hamid is not
available for league matches, only CONCACAF Champions League.
With Kocic in goal, how does DC work with this?

By definition, the Convey Award goes to DC United's rookie of the year. The award's namesake is
Bobby Convey, who coincidentally is on the other side today. Convey was very promising in his short
time here in DC, and started 18 matches his rookie season, which sounded like a lot until this
year.
Last year's Convey Award went to Ryan Cordeiro with a huge 76% margin.

This 1-0 win reminded me a bit of another 1-0 win less than a week ago against the Wizards. United
was clearly the better team, and our defense did well in shutting down some opportunities, but a
big part of the victory can also be attributed to a weaker team failing to get any quality shots on
target.

Boy did I miss the feelings of 2008. Poor motivation in international tournaments, decent
possession but few shots on target, costly individual mistakes... This is deja vu all over
again.

Danny Szetela stood out in an otherwise
mediocre midfield.

DC United should be neither elated nor concerned after the team needed 75 minutes to beat a PDL
squad consisting mostly of college players and a few amateurs. It wasn't pretty, but DC is one step
closer to defending their US Open Cup title, which is more than you can say about the 4 MLS clubs
who lost to USL clubs last night.

16 games in to the season, with a two week break from MLS action, I can think of no better time to
deliver to you the second annual installment of the Mid-Season Review. In this space over the next
10 or so days, we will take a look at the Acquisitions, Departures, and Trades that United has made
since the end of the 2008 season, and then wrap it all up with a Summary.

Let's try out a different format this time for my much heralded "Versus" series. Here we'll take a
look at each of our three potential starting goalkeepers (Louis Crayton, Josh Wicks, and Milos
Kocic) on a number of different categories to see if we can come up with a consensus.
Stats to date:
Including Open Cup matches, these three aren't too
different.

This is the second in a recurring series where we look at the DC United season, five games at a
time. Of course I failed already because I miscounted and should have written this one last week,
so this post is through the Chivas match, and does not include the scoreless draw with RSL.
Results: 2-0-3.

This is part 1 in a...multi part series where we'll go over a situation that needs to be
addressed by the Front Office or Tommy and lay out the pros and cons, and ask you to decide.
Today's issue: the goalie position.
As I wrote earlier, Louis Crayton appears to be on the outs. Both from my sources and from
Martin Fernandez from United Mania, Crayton appears to be rubbing people on the staff the wrong way
with his attitude.

It's gonna be difficult not to vote for Dwayne De Rosario for player of the week. ...
D-Ro is one of ColoradoSoccerNow's favorite players, and there are few things in Major League
Soccer that I like better than seeing De Rosario doing his post-goal chicken dance. He did it twice
on Saturday, and both goals warranted it.

In a sparsely attended game (which may be the worst to take your Dad to as his first
professional soccer experience), DCU beat out FCD 2-0, with goals by Fred and Brandon Barklage, who
dazzled. Chances were easy to come by, as DC had Dallas goal under siege from the get go.
Fred missed a sitter early in the first half, and Quaranta was not playing his best, despite
what Goff's ratings may tell you.

Since last we delved into the messy business of roster refinement, United has decamped to Florida,
brought in a new batch of trialists, and seen their backup goalkeeper go walkabout. There is still
no news of what will be done to address the Gallardo-sized hole in the midfield and on the wage
bill. So where do we stand now?

And the hits just keep on comin'! Lots to talk about today after Goff provides us with the shocker
that Wells' confidence may be so entirely shot that he's contemplating leaving the game altogether.
Figures that he'd screw us one more time, doesn't it? I mean, we could have gotten a lower round
draft pick (not that they're worth much anymore, but beggars can't be choosers) at the very least

Hmmm, things are still disturbingly quiet given that the draft has come and gone. About all we've
clarified since last time is that the Walter Martinez acquisition is a work in progress and that
we're working several angles on a Mystery Veteran Defender of Unknown Nationality (a Mivdun?).
Also, there has been mention of interest in a young right-sided midfielder from a domestic Jamaican
team.
