Waiting for the Weekend (World Cup Edition)

100 Percent Soccer 09 October @ 10:37 AM EST

First things first: the excellent movie "The Damned United" opens today in Los Angeles.

The studio and producers face an uphill battle persuading American soccer fans in general (most of whom have probably not heard of late English manager Brian Clough, who is the film's subject) let alone general movie-goers to see this film, but both constituencies will enjoy this film that I highly recommend.

‘The Damned United’ is good fun, just don’t expect much of a story

American Soccer News 09 October @ 06:08 AM EST

Tom Hopper's The Damned United is a fun British sports drama based on David Pearce's novel of the same name. Starring Michael Sheen as Clough, the film opens in select U.S. theaters today (it already ran in the U.K. and Ireland). It tells the story of Brian Clough's tumultuous 44 days in charge of Leeds United in 1974.

The Damn United

Springfield MO Soccer 08 October @ 12:52 PM EST

Wow, a triple threat. A futbol movie, about Leed's United (my favorite former EPL team, now leading the 1st Division and primed to return!) and a great story. It's been covered by NPR and is receiving special screenings on both coasts. I've put in a request to my favorite indie theater, The Moxie, to find out if they'll be bringing the film to our area.

Movie Review: The Damned United

EPL Talk 05 October @ 05:30 AM EST

I was sitting in a plush screening room at the Sony Pictures Lot in Culver City, CA just a short walk down the hallway to anything and everything Spider-Man (hell, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst may have been on premises for all I know – the studio lot was so infested with Spider-Man promos) but when The Damned United kicked-off I was no longer in warm Los Angeles.

Movie Review – The Damned United

EPL Talk 05 October @ 05:00 AM EST

There is a thin line between being a mad genius and simply being mad. If Brian Clough was the mad genius of English football, the new film The Damned United explores Clough's simply mad stage when he got fired at Derby County and then, after 44 days in charge of Leeds United, got himself dismissed there as well.

And I enjoyed the book.I'm sorry that the Clough family have been upset but it is, essentially, a fictionalised account of real events involving Brian Clough. Click to continue reading...
