HexagonalBlog 16 November @ 02:15 AM EST
I just saw a news report on Goal.com saying that Mexican striker Antonio DeNigris has died on a
heart attack yesterday. He was 31. He had played in Turkey and Greece in recent years (his last
club was Larissa). Sixteen caps for the Mexican national team. More later. Wow. RIP.

Franco should be a hero in Mexico/PA Sports Image
I understand this is a website dedicated to MLS and US Soccer, but please indulge me in this
moment of personal privilege about our neighbors to the south and our neighbors to the north.
Guille Franco opened his Premier League account yesterday, playing for a less competitive West
Ham side than former Mexican striker Jared Borgetti did in Bolton a few years back.

Blanco's Unsporting Ways Led Mexico to Qualification
PREFACE
This blog post is long overdue. My distinct hope was that Mexico WOULD NOT qualify
for South Africa, and this article which is sure to arouse controversy would not need to be
written.

Credit:Mexsport Mexico 4-1 El Salvador ESTO's front page said "Gracias", to Javier Aguirre, to
Cuauhtémoc Blanco, to all the Mexican national team, and I think all of Mexico feels the same way.
Javier Aguirre is Mexico's Mr. Fix-It. He turned around the looming disaster in the Mexican
national team after the Sánchez and Eriksson eras left the side on the verge of the playoffs,
incorporated young players like Vela and dos Santos into the lineup, and brought back the old
soldier Blanco.

The CONCACAF region is still very close and all six remaining teams were in action on Saturday,
October 10, 2009. The United States could clinch a spot with a win while Honduras and Costa Rica
are in 3rd and 4th. Mexico will all but clinch a spot with a win as they have a better goal
differential than Honduras and Costa Rica.

Mexican legend Cuauhtemoc Blanco once again proved to be the difference for his side, scoring
the only goal on a penalty in Mexico's 1-0 win over Honduras last night. Minutes after scoring, the
36-year-old, who retired from international play a year ago today, only to be coaxed back to a
struggling Mexican team back in April, Blanco passed out on the pitch and had to be taken off on a
stretcher.

While I was watching the USA loose to Mexico again on Wednesday, something struck me. It is clear
from the Hexagonal Concacaf World Cup qualifiers that the USA is not the dominant team in the
region. We may be the best (or one of the best), but not dominant by any measurement.
Mexico used to be dominant in every way in Concacaf until we developed over the last thirty years
into a serious threat.

Deja vu. The USA goes up early on a formidable opponent only to see the lead evaporate and
Bradley's boys are completely unable to generate anything in the second half. I loved the ESPN
pregame feature on the rivalry. A lot of hype, but it shows what this rivalry has become over the
last twenty years and what its potential is, if we can ever win in Mexico.

Mexico is hurting. The poor management reigns of Sven Goran Eriksson all but threw out the
successful Copa America run in 2007 under Hugo Sanchez and brought Mexico to its lowest point since
the struggles of the 2001 hexagonal.
But Mexico is never to be underestimated. Man for man, when healthy and calling up a full squad,
El Tri still has more accomplished and quality players than anyone else in CONCACAF.

Mexico's form in World Cup qualifying has been less than stellar. After qualifying for the
Hexagonal based solely on goal difference, El Tri now finds itself in fourth place in the final
qualifying group.
On its third manager in 17 months, Mexico desperately needs a victory. Javier Aguirre has
recalled the veteran hands of Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Guille Franco to lead the attack for El
Tri.

The United States and Mexico renew their heated rivalry on Wednesday August 12th in CONCACAF
2010 World Cup Qualifying at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

different circumstances. The US has a new roster with many experienced players and only a few who
played in the Gold Cup.

The United States v Mexico rivalry continues on August 12th as they play in CONCACAF World Cup
Qualifying. The match is important for both teams who have not clinched a spot to next year's World
Cup yet. There are a few players from the Gold Cup including Chad Marshall and Stuart Holden. The
rest of the roster is similar to the Confederations Cup roster with names like Howard, Donovan,
Dempsey, Onyewu, and Bocanegra.

After an even first half, the Mexican national team capitalized on dubious penalty call to take
a 1-0 lead and never looked back against the U.S. Men's National Team in Sunday's Gold Cup final at

counter-attacks, and the rout was on, before ending in a final score of 5-0.
