The Aztexan 08 October @ 08:33 PM EST
photo: Patrick MeredithThe Aztex bagged an impressive win last night at the RRISD Athletic Complex,
beating Mexico's first-division contenders Monterrey 1-0.
Though just an exhibition match, the win is significant. For one, it ends 2009 play in Austin on a
high note. The fact that it was earned from a good Mexican pro team, in the midst of their season,
adds to the victory.

MLS Rumors 28 August @ 01:30 PM EST
Sparse home support and a 5-0 drubbing were not a good look for the Capital Club
View from the Press Box - DC United vs Toluca

Dan Loney weighs in with what I figured out long ago. I can boil his post down to a single
sentence.
MLS has found a way to make money from people who hate MLS.
And that's pretty much the point of Soccer United Marketing's existence. Quite honestly, it's the
answer to keeping MLS afloat and prosperous in the long term.

Look at these nice friends I made at a soccer game in Mexico City!
Ok, so it was much more than a friendly little match. Here's my story of a day I'll never
forget.
Carlo, Chris, and I arrived in Mexico City the day before the match. We took it easy, knowing
the following day would be quite an experience.

Plenty enough has been said elsewhere on the internet about the US Men's National Team's
disappointing performance at Azteca earlier this week. Probably not enough has been made in the
national media of the vomit-filled cups that were hurled (pun intended) at Landon Donovan while he
was taking corner kicks.

This is what separated U.S. fans from Mexican fans in the Azteca parking lot. With this kind of
police protection you would have thought Obama, the Pope, and the Dali Lama were all in the house.

After absorbing everything from yesterday's 2-1 loss at Azteca, here are some final thoughts:
- It's disappointing but not damning. Six points against El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago will
make me forget about it.
- I know Mexican fans have a reputation for being bad, but I am thoroughly disgusted with what I
read about here, and from Grant Wahl's little notebook (at the end).

That's how ESPN's Bob Ley put it after Mexico's 2-1 win over the United States in a World Cup
qualifier Wednesday at Azteca Stadium.
Here's are some of my thoughts:
- Charlie Davies is now the best forward on the USMNT. He was everywhere and scored a great
opener. Brian Ching/Jozy Altidore/Clint Dempsey were invisible up front.

You mean, this isn't the US team that was going to go down to Azteca and defeat the mightly
Mexicans?
They hadn't suddenly flipped a switch from the Confederations Cup and were hyped to do what no
other US team had done before?
Nope.
The US scored first on a nice goal by Charlie Davies, then held the lead for all of 10 minutes, and
finally gave in for good in the final 10, as Mexico won the CONCACAF World Cup 2010 qualifier
between the nations, 2-1.

As the U.S. MNT gets ready to make the trip to Mexico for the Aug. 12 game at Azteca we've got some
highlights from a few previous trips to Mexico City.
First up - March 27, 2005:
Playing their second qualifier of the final round on the road (the only team forced to start the
round away for their first two games), the U.

Gustavo Arellano is having me back on his show to talk about Wednesday's showdown between Mexico
and the US.
The stakes are high, particularly for Mexico. At home, El Tri are unbeaten against the US. In the
past decade, however, they've had a losing record in matches played away from home.

It was a tough Sunday in many ways for the Miami Ultras. Once again we were invited to attend
Univision's Republica Deportiva for the USA vs Mexico Gold Cup final. Everything was great,
confidence was high. The Mexican fans chanted their typical Mexican tunes while the Ultras began to
drown them out with our incessant USA!

I wish that I were writing an apology to the U.S. team right now. Sorry- and
I-was-so-wrong-for-doubting the 'B/C' squad. But let's face it: we all knew the end result. People
were optimistic that it would be close, but any objective observer knew how it would end.
The Mexican fans' cheers for the U.

This was a great post on DailySoccerFix by Steve Davis, describing the soccer fever that is
sweeping our country this summer.
I tell people all the time that there are plenty of soccer fans in this country. It's just that
only a relatively small percentage like MLS. But since that's the country's most visible soccer
property, it's irresistibly convenient to use as a barometer. Click to continue reading...
Here's Mexico coach Javier Aguirre letting his emotions get the better of him during the recent
Gold Cup game against Panama. He kicks out at Panama's Ricardo Phillips for absolutely no reason,
as Phillips ran along the touch line.
For his actions, Aguirre rightly received a red card and was apologetic after the game;
"I would like to apologize in order of the Mexican fans, the Mexican team, the Mexican press,
everyone involved with the Mexican national team, to the officials and workers because I didn't
have very good conduct,"
Ricardo Phillips also, bizarrely received a red card for pushing Aguirre in reaction to the kick.

The news came out this week that Austin Aztex FC and the University of Texas will jointly host an
exhibition match featuring 2 premier Mexican pro soccer teams, dubbed the "State Farm Copa Aztex".
The deal is to last for several years, making this an annual event. The teams announced for this
first year's matchup on July 18 are Cruz Azul and Tigres UANL.

Sports teams shaking their fans down for money is nothing new. U.S. Soccer passed the hat last week
by introducing something called the "U.S. Soccer Supporters Club." Basically it allows the USSF to
hit up their most loyal fans for $50 a piece in exchange for some trinkets and dibs on tickets to
the 2010 World Cup.

With the Portsmouth hotseat still empty, heavy rumors have been floating around that Mexico manager
Sven Goran Eriksson could be on the way in to Fratton Park. All reports indicated that the former
England manager would remain in Mexico, but following last night's 2-0 defeat at the hands of the
United States, his position remains uncertain.
