Abby Wambach's penchant for coming up big in the FIFA Women's World Cup this past summer has
earned her more individual acclaim six months later.
Wambach was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year Tuesday, becoming the first
soccer player -- male or female -- to win an individual year-end award from the AP.
With joy in the air and consumerism driving television right now, my dreams are of big purchases
for the Seattle Sounders. A little girl may want two front teeth, I'd rather two amazing fullbacks,
possibly one as a youth DP. I know enough that these are just dreams, the reality is more likely a
player like Heiner Mora and Ever Alvarado.
CONCACAF has announced the pairings for the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League. Seattle
will play Santos Laguna, Metapan plays UNAM Pumas, with the other two quarterfinals matching up
teams from the same league. Morelia plays Monterrey and Toronto draws the LA Galaxy. The dates and
times have yet to be released, with the home-and-away series set for March 2012.
The Denver Broncos are not the only recipients of the unbridled optimism of Colorado sports fans
and writers.
Trailing Kansas City 2-0 on aggregate when they take the field tonight at Livestrong Sporting
Park in Kansas, the Colorado Rapids have suddenly become the beneficiaries of miraculous hopes for
improbable outcomes.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras. –- The Galaxy booked their ticket to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF
Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Club Motagua on Thursday night in Honduras.
Juninho put the Galaxy ahead in the 29th minute with a dipping ball from distance that was too
much for Motagua goalkeeper Kerpo De Leon.

Hector Jimenez has been living life under the radar in his rookie season, but when the
midfielder from the University of California has had his chance to see action, he's grabbed a hold
of it.
Jimenez was instrumental in the Galaxy's 2-1 victory over Morelia in the CONCACAF Champions
League, helping to create the winning goal.
"No disrespect to the Eastern Conference, but tonight was the championship" -- Dallas defensive
midfielder Daniel Hernandez after winning the Western Conference Championship in 2010I just wanted to throw that in as a "friendly" reminder about our guests tomorrow. I expect him to
get the official Class VI welcome for 90 minutes!
So, yeah, about that whole post where I said the Rapids will be beat by Metapan and the roster
selection was not great. Well Colorado proved me an idiot with a 3-1 win last night. The reserve
squad, lead by Steve Guppy and augmented by Wells Thompson and Tyrone Marshall, pulled together in
a tough environment and dominated the scoreboard.
The Colorado Rapids unloaded a month of frustrations on Isidro Metapan, beating the Salvadoran
side 3-1 at home on Wednesday night.
In the process, the Rapids (2-2-1, 7 points) also threw a lifeline to a CONCACAF Champions
League campaign that appeared dead after losing two matches at home by a combined 6-2 margin.
It's a big night for Major League Soccer teams both domestically and regionally. The Los Angeles
Galaxy and Colorado Rapids fighting for their CONCACAF Champions League lives, while FC Dallas
looks to take a giant step further toward advancing to the knockout stage.
In league play, Sporting Kansas City and Columbus meet in a crucial Eastern Conference battle,
while Real Salt Lake is expected to welcome playmaker Javier Morales back to the field at some
point during its match against the Chicago Fire.

The Colorado Rapids could advance to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League by
winning both of their last two group matches. Even so, it looks like club is throwing in the towel
on its tournament run.
Colorado sent a reserve-heavy squad to face Isidro Metapan in El Salvador for Wednesday's match,
and head coach Gary Smith didn't make the trip, either, instead leaving assistant coach Steve Guppy
to handle the team.
The Colorado Rapids season ended at about 10 p.m. on Wednesday.
The team will still play two more CONCACAF Champions League group stage games, four MLS regular
season matches and one probable playoff game, but the disappointing 2011 season ended with the
final whistle in Real Espana's 2-1 victory at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Tomorrow night Real Espana becomes the final CCL team to make the trip to Denver for the group
stage. In August we faced them in Honduras using mostly a team of reserves and drew 1-1. The only
members of our best XI that started that game were Kimura, Larentowicz, and Cummings with Moor
getting 20 and Nyassi getting 10 minutes late.

Stumbling Columbus hosts bumbling Houston in MLS action tonight.
Colorado hosts Santos Laguna of the Mexican League tomorrow. This is the biggest CCL match the
Rapids will play, as Santos is by far the best team in the group but a win tomorrow would put
Colorado in the driver's seat for advancing into the knockout rounds. Game time tomorrow at the
Dick is 8pm and the game will be on FOX Soccer Channel.
Landon Donovan makes the most of his play against the Rapids, and he did it again on Friday
night, delivering the lone goal in the LA Galaxy's home win over Colorado.
This time, the goal came in the 36th minute as Donovan was unmarked when receiving a pass from
Sean Franklin. Unlike his miss against Costa Rico on the same field in a USA friendly a week early,
Donovan was clinical.

Apologies for the delay, a summer flu has knocked me out for the last 24 hours. Preview of
tomorrow's Chivas game will be up later tonight.

Robbie Keane appears ready to go for the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Los Angeles received the Ireland international's P-1 visa on Wednesday, which will make him
eligible to play in the club's match against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday.
Well, it took a number of years, and a couple dozen tries, but an MLS team has finally scored a
victory south of the border in CONCACAF Champions League group play as FC Dallas defeated Pumas
UNAM 1-0 in Mexico City. It shouldn't have taken this long, but sincere congratulations to Schellas
Hyndman's side for finally breaking the ice.
The Colorado Rapids couldn't have gotten off to a worse start in their CONCACAF Champions League
match on Wednesday night, surrendering an early penalty to go down 1-0 to visiting Salvadoran side
Metapan.
The defending MLS Cup champions didn't buckle though, not even after a Matt Pickens blunder gave
Metapan a 2-1 lead.
Isidro Metapan and the Colorado Rapids combined for five goals on Wednesday night, but it was a
brace from Macoumba Kandji that made the difference in the home side's first CONCACAF Champions
League match.
Kandji's goals, in the 16th minute and first-half stoppage time, rescued a discombobulated
Rapids side and paved the way for Andre Akpan's second half winner at Dick's Sporting Goods
Park.
The other two teams in Group D of the CONCACAF Champions League are kicking off now. If we're
gunning for second place in the group (as we probably should be), we'll want a Monterrey win here
to reduce the competition. On the other hand, a stumble by the Mexican team would open a crack in
the door to a group win and possibly an easier route through the bracket.

The Colorado Rapids learned the final dates and hosting opportunities for the team's inaugural
run in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday.
Colorado, which hosts its opening match in CCL play on Aug. 17 against Metapan, will also host
matches against Santos Laguna on Sept. 13 and Real Espana on Sept.
Brian Mullan made the most of a Friday night game, launching a goal of the week nominee, and
Sanna Nyassi turned provider as the Colorado Rapids downed the Columbus Crew 2-0 at Dick's Sporting

Colorado improved to 9-6-10 (37 points) and dispatched the third Eastern Conference leading team
in the past four games.

As most NASL teams enter their final 10 games of the season, here's a taste of how dominant
Carolina has been since the beginning of April.
The Railhawks have racked up an incredible +25 goal differential over their opening 18 games.
That's followed by the NSC Minnesota Stars.

Most Seattle Sounders fans should be reasonably familiar with CONCACAF Champions League, but
because it's a bit different than anything else in American sports, it can't hurt to do a bit of a
refresher course. But even if you are well aware of CCL and how it works, this story should still
be interesting as we'll go over some of the teams the Sounders are likely to face and what kind of
chance they have at improving on last year's disappointing Group Stage performance.
