In recent years, the January window's been relatively tame 2007 was maybe the most active, with
Javier Mascherano and Alvaro Arbeloa among the names on the way in, and 2008 saw Martin Skrtel

underwhelming Robbie Keane, and 2010 had only Maxi Rodriguez arriving on a free with Andrea Dossena
and Andriy Voronin leaving Anfield.

Liverpool v Manchester United – preview
Two weeks after beating Everton in the Merseyside derby at Goodison the Reds (that's the
‘Reds' of Liverpool, not the ‘Red Devils' of Stretford) today take on Manchester United at
Anfield. Kenny Dalglish told his press conference audience that "everyone" was fit for the match
but with some of the squad away on international duty since that derby win, some only returning as
late as Thursday morning, there hasn't been much time to prepare and that may play a part in which
team is selected.
Manchester United will be hunting their first win at Anfield in four years when they make the trip
to bitter rivals Liverpool in Saturday's blockbuster clash.
As one of the most eagerly-anticipated fixtures of the season, the Saturday showdown promises to
get Premier League action back under way in style after the international break.

Fabio Aurelio has expressed his delight at the prospect of skipper Steven Gerrard lining up
against Manchester United this weekend in what would be his first start in over seven months but is
wary of the limited preparation that will go into Saturday's early kick-off.
Aurelio has had his own share of injury woes in the past, which has only furthered his
understanding of how the club's starting line-up can be bolstered by the return of someone as
instrumental as Gerrard.

In this week's review section, we look back at stories from the North London and Merseyside
derbies, as well as news from bottom of the table side Bolton.
If players can be banned for bad tackles why aren't refs banned for bad decisions like
Rodwell's red card?
As a player, I was a regular customer of FA disciplinary commissions, and I usually came away
poorer for the experience. But, finally, I can now speak my mind about referees without dreading
another summons landing on the doormat.
What hope is there for football if fan passion at the Merseyside derby spills over into
poison?

Everton 0-2 Liverpool: Reds take advantage of referee's mistake
Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners in the 216th Merseyside Derby, in a game overshadowed by a
shocking decision by referee Martin Atkinson. When Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell clearly won the
ball in a 23rd minute challenge with Luis Suarez, Atkinson surprised the 39,000 crowd at a
sun-baked Goodison Park, by brandishing a straight red for the talented youngster.
Refs like Martin Atkinson don't realise football is a gladiatorial contest and are
ruining the game for fans
In this column seven days ago, I urged the football authorities to show a little common sense,
and recognise the Merseyside derby is an encounter that requires sensitive handling.

Spotted before last weekend's Merseyside derby, here we see a ridiculously tetchy Luis Suarez
taking the warm-up far too seriously...
Calm down mardy bum, have a biscuit.
Anyone else suprised Ol' Luis didn't clutch his shin and leap three feet in the air when that
sprinkler went off?
Gary McAllister believes Luis Suarez has already proven he was well worth the £24 million
Liverpool paid to sign him from Ajax in January.
Suarez has quickly established himself as one of the most feared forwards in the Barclays Premier
League thanks to his supreme movement and clinical finishing.
Liverpool FC was making hard work of the Merseyside derby – and then Kenny Dalglish introduced
the substitutes. We did not look like we were going to break Everton down and we missed a great
opportunity when Dirk Kuyt's penalty was saved by Tim Howard at the end of the first half. With 10
men, Everton just sat back and we were struggling but it was game long marred by the wrongful
decision to send off Jack Rodwell.
My buddy, Ed and I continued our almost weekly dissection of Liverpool's weekend performance after
a friendly game of indoor futsal. Now Ed is a guy with a rather thought provoking mind. While we
were both thrilled that "The Beast" Andy Carroll opened his Premier League account this season with
a brilliant derby goal, he remarked how Dirk Kuyt's excellent run and "dummy" duck created the room
for Carroll to rifle the ball past Tim Howard.

Merseyside derby hero Andy Carroll dedicated his Goodison Park strike to everyone who has stood by
him during his short time at Liverpool.
The £35million striker scored the crucial opening goal against city rivals Everton on Saturday,
his first in the Premier League since April.
The former Newcastle forward has only scored four times in total in all competitions since his big
money move in January
However, he hopes his derby strike can kick-start his season and wanted to thank those who have
backed him over the past few months.
With 20 minutes to go in the October 2007 Merseyside derby, Steven Gerrard was surprisingly hauled
off by Rafa Benitez and replaced by the inexperienced Lucas Leiva. Fans and pundits across the
globe were aghast at what was perceived to be a traitorous act, but Liverpool went on to win, and
Lucas played an integral part in securing the penalty that won the game.
Liverpool winger Stewart Downing has hailed team-mate Andy Carroll and backed the striker to go
from strength to strength following his first Premier League goal of the season.
Downing moved to Anfield in the summer in a £20 million move from Aston Villa and has made a good
impression, and believes that Carroll will get a lot of confidence from his opening goal in the
Merseyside derby.
Everton have vowed to take 'firm and far-reaching action' against anyone who is found to have
thrown objects at Liverpool players during Saturday's Merseyside derby.
Objects - including what appeared to be at least one coin and a number of plastic bottles - were
seen being hurled at the likes of Luis Suarez and Craig Bellamy at Goodison Park over the weekend.
