A spectacular Wayne Rooney goal capped a 2-1 Manchester United victory Saturday, but did the
loss shove the Citizens out of the title race? On this edition of the EPL Talk Podcast, myself,
Kartik Krishnaiyer and Laurence McKenna talk about Saturday's big match, one that keeps United five
points clear at the top of the league.
The weekend preview edition starts with Olympic Stadium news and the potential return of Chris
Hughton, which I discuss with a special guest. Making his first appearance on the show is Kevin
McCauley (manager of CartilageFreeCaptain.com, managing editor of WorldSoccerReader.com, and
contributor at SBNation.
On a historic weekend of football in the English Premier League – one that saw a record number
of Saturday goals, Manchester United's first loss of the season, and a memorable capitulation from
Arsenal – the story was Kenny Dalglish; or, the story was Carlo Ancelotti, depending on how you
want to look at Sunday's match at Stamford Bridge, a 1-0 win by Liverpool in Fernando Torres's
Blues debut.
For many of you, it's Super Bowl Sunday, so we're moving the show up one hour giving you a
slightly larger gap between show and Bowl. For myself, Laurence McKenna and Kartik Krishnaiyer, it
was Chelsea-Liverpool Sunday, with Kenny Dalglish leading the Reds to a potentially season-defining
win at Stamford Bridge.
The fourth round of the FA Cup saw the league's top four barely survive, though the fifth of the
Big Five (Tottenham) met their end at Craven Cottage. On this edition of the EPL Talk Podcast,
myself, Kartik Krishnaiyer, and the returning Laurence McKenna discuss the weekend's results,
outcomes that failed to producing the type of captivating upset we've come to hope for from our
knock-out competitions.
Only one of the English Premier League's top six clubs entering mid-week action came away with
three points from Tuesday and Wednesday fixtures, and unfortunately for those looking for the title
race to stay as close as possible, that club was league-leading Manchester United, winning 2-1 on
Tuesday versus Stoke.
Manchester United's kept their spot at the top of the league, no matter how many times Gary
Neville tried to give it away. Macnehster City's even on points after their win over Blackpool,
while Arsenal was convincing at a St. Andrews' Stadium that's often inhospitable to visitors.
On this edition of the EPL Talk podcast, myself, Laurence McKenna and Jesse Chula (filling in
for the infirm Kartik Krishnaiyer) and talk about the weekend that was in our favorite football
league.
