For the seventh consecutive year, I'm one of the voters for the National Soccer Hall of Fame,
and it's a responsibility I take very seriously. I've made each of my previous six ballots and the
rationales behind them public, so there's no need to change now.
There are 12 newcomers on the 31-player ballot for 2012.
Yesterday the official ballot for the National Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2011 was announced,
and United States soccer fans will surely be pleased with the candidates. The pool of possible Hall
of Famers is full of talented players who plied their trade both domestically in Major League
Soccer as well as those pioneers that paved the way for fellow Americans overseas.
SEATTLE, WA Finalists for the National Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2011 were announced Thursday by
U.S. Soccer. Voting has already begun and continues through March 11. The results will be announced
in a few months. Here are the voting rules for the player category as detailed in the USSF press
release: The [.
Cobi Jones, Eddie Pope and Jason Kreis highlight a strong group of first-timers among the
nominees on the 2011 U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame ballot, which was released Thursday afternoon.
Jones, the United States' all-time leader in caps with 164, played in three World Cups and was
one of the most recognizable and distinguished players of his era.
Here's how the voting has gone for the National Soccer Hall of Fame for the last seven years
(all I have are the top tens - my man Jack Huckel, late of the Hall, may have the
complete lists, but whether he'll ever share them, I don't know). Those players who were elected
are in bold.
So, thanks to my man Dan Loney, I am reminded that Soccer Hall of Fame ballots
are due tonight. Last year, I apparently had until early December. Caught me off guard.
Anyway, last year I voted for Jeff Agoos, Mauricio Cienfuegos, Raul Diaz Arce, Marco
Etcheverry, Joy Fawcett, Robin Fraser, Pato Margetic, Victor Nogueira, Preki Radosavljevic
and Carlos Valderrama.
The National Soccer Hall of Fame released its final ballot for the Class of 2010 and the 24
former soccer players chosen represent a vast array of teams and eras.
Former U.S. national team standouts Earnie Stewart, Peter Vermes and Thomas Dooley, Women's
national team stars Cindy Parlow and Shannon McMillan, as well as foreign-born MLS pioneers Marco
Etcheverry, Peter Nowak and Carlos Valderrama are just some of the candidates on the ballot.

ONEONTA, NY (November 9, 2009) – The National Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum distributed the 2010
Player Ballot today to all voters. The ballot features 24 retired national team and professional
players who all have contributed to the growth of soccer in the United States.
The Miami Ultras organized a Major League Soccer watch party at Mickey Byrnes Pub in Hollywood this
past Sunday which also had the gracious presence of former Los Angeles Galaxy playmaker and ex
Salvadoran national team player Mauricio Cienfuegos.
It was a great experience to be next to the MLS Cup and to be able to pose with it in pictures
before it headed West to L.
Hot stuff: Former Galaxy midfield general Mauricio Cienfuegos has returned to the club as a
coach (Daily Breeze file photo).
Mauricio Cienfuegos, the diminutive Salvadoran who made more than 200 hugely influential
appearances for the Galaxy in an eight-year career with the club that ended in 2003, is returning
as technical coach for the LA Galaxy Academy.
I noticed a couple of errors yesterday relating to the LA Galaxy's games in the 2000 CONCACAF
Champions Cup (played in January 2001, but still called the 2000 edition). They've been fixed, and
the corrected version can be downloaded here (stats through 2010).
Brian Kelly & Zak Ibsen were each listed with two sub appearances.
For the first time in club history the Galaxy play a legitimate Champions League game.
Well, a preliminary round game anyway. And it's against the "minor league" Puerto Rico Islanders
not a big name club. Oh, and it's the CONCACAF version not the famous UEFA edition.
Still, for Galaxy fans tonight's 7 o'clock game at Home Depot Center (live on Fox Soccer
Channel) is bigger than the MLS All-Star game featuring Manchester United a day later, said Coach
Bruce Arena in my weekly column.
Here is the final video interview before posting the LA Galaxy alumni game footage sometime Sunday
or early next week. Mundo Deportivo's Alejandro Navarro interviews ex-LA Galaxy playmaker and El
Salvadorean legend, Mauricio Cienfuegos, after both of them have finished playing in the alumni
match (Spanish only).
Remember if you have any questions for the players or coaches, post here before
halftime and I will do what I can.

It has been 15 years since MLS began, giving U.S. soccer fans a domestic league for the first
time since the North American Soccer League finally succumbed to over-spending a dozen long years
earlier.
It has been 10 years since the Galaxy began considering a move to Carson (I broke the story in
the Daily Breeze in March 2000).

So which bicycle kick was the most impressive? Little Mauricio Cienfuegos' beauty against the ol'
Dallas Burn? Marcelo Balboa against the Crew? Or was it just seeing Carlos Ruiz in a LA Cosm.... I
mean, Galaxy uniform?
