There are times in a soccer match when scoring a goal can destroy the motivation for an opponent to mount a comeback. The New England Revolution were that team on Saturday shortly after Luis Solignac put the visiting Fire 2:0 up in the 61st minute. It was the kind of authoritative strike that resulted in the Revs looking like they were ready to pack it in.

Near the end of his post-match press conference, talking about his team's growth through three games, his voice intensified.

Fire keep optimism alive with 2-0 win over Portland

The Fire passed their biggest test of the preseason with a tactically sound victory over the MLS Cup Champion Portland Timbers. A switch from a formation that often featured five defenders in the first half, to the team's more conventional set-up in the second, allowed the team to stifle the home team while absorbing pressure and attack on counters.

Who Is Available in the Second Round of the Re-entry Draft?

Stumptown Footy at related • 0 views

The second round of the MLS Re-entry Draft is coming up quickly tomorrow and there are still plenty of players ready for selection. The Portland Timbers do not have a strong history of taking players out of the Re-entry Draft -- Steve Zakuani in the first round in 2013 is the team's only selection to date -- but there are still plenty of intriguing prospects available, particularly now that teams are no longer able to sign or trade their own players that are draft-elligible.

After last week's litany of break downs the Fire regrouped and looked a bit more like the side that finished preseason undefeated. Playing a man down for an hour forced a change in the 3-5-2 formation that struggled to start the game and forced a more compact and disciplined effort. The shift to a more defensive posture resulted in another lopsided possession total (65-35 to Orlando), but the Fire were able to dodge enough bullets and remain dangerous enough on the counter to take a well earned point out of their first road game of the season.

The 2016 season is off to an auspicious start following a successful preseason that fostered some positive sentiment. A questionable goalkeeping change and an even more dubious team defensive performance left the Fire with a loss to another side attempting to recoup from a disastrous 2015. Former Crew goalkeeper Matt Lampson was given the nod in goal over Sean Johnson in what Veljko Paunovic called a "day by day move" after a good outing against the Timbers to close the Simple Invitational tournament.
