Time for another year of wishes for 2012. Here's a look of what I am wanting and wishing to see in
2012.
1. Silverware - Is anything else really that important? I want silverware, as Robb Heineman put it
tonight on Twitter, #paintthewall. I want to add more stuff to the wall that shows our
accomplishments.
Three Sporting KC players have been called up by Jurgen Klinsmann for the upcoming US Men's
national team camp in Phoenix and Los Angeles. Teal Bunbury returns to the US national team, having
been a part of the quite a few of Klinsmann last few squads, although he's yet to make an
appearance for the national team under the new manager.
With the season now over, it's time to take a look at my year end awards for Sporting KC. As last
year, members of the media got to vote on MVP, Defensive player of the year, and Humanitarian of
the year. The team awards saw Jimmy Nielsen bring home MVP, Matt Besler bring home defensive player
of the year , and Kei Kamara bring home Humanitarian of the Year for the second year in a row.
Well as I said earlier, that was gutting, but here are some stats from the game, including a couple
nice marks being hit.
The loss was KC's first home playoff loss since 1997, the team had gone unbeaten for 12 games since
their 3-0 home loss to Colorado.
CJ Sapong tied a team record for appearances in a season with 40.
The game against Colorado was KC's 40th in all competitions this year, tying a team record set by
in 2000 and 2002.
Matt Besler's minutes total for the season is now 3,367, good for 11th most in all competitions in
team history.
Davy Arnaud made his 14th playoff appearance for KC, breaking his tie with Peter Vermes for 9th
place on that list.
Sporting KC's +10 goal difference is only the second time in team history their goal difference has
been in double digits positively.
Matt Besler ended the season playing 2,880 minutes in league play, tied for the 3rd most in team
history for a single season with Preki in 1996 and Bo Oshoniyi in 2005.
Sporting KC didn't have to rely on other results, KC took care of business themselves, beating DC
1-0 and earning themselves the top spot in the Eastern Conference. KC started an unchanged lineup
from the one that clinched a playoff spot vs New York. KC once again had the early pressure
creating some decent chances, the best of which was a cross that Omar Bravo ran onto in the fourth
minute.
Matt Besler's 54th minute goal was enough for visiting Sporting Kansas City in their 1-0 victory
over D.C. United last night at RFK Stadium. The loss wraps up the season for United as they were
officially eliminated from playoff contention ...
Playoffs feel so good.
Last night was the 12th league win, and 15th in all competitions this year, the most since 2004
when the team had 14 league wins and 20 in all competitions.
Teal Bunbury scored his 14th league goal, breaking his tie with Matt McKeon, Jose Burciaga, Sasha
Victorine, and Claudio Lopez and moving into a tie with Jack Jewsbury for 13th on that list.
Sporting KC had a chance to really move away from some of the teams in the Eastern Conference, but
some poor finishing on the few chances created against the San Jose Earthquakes kept them from
taking all 3 points. In a game that was fairly unexciting for much of the game turned wild in the
85th minute as San Jose grabbed the lead only for Teal Bunbury to equalize 30 seconds later to give
the teams a share of the points.
Sporting KC extended their team record unbeaten run to 14 games last night as for once KC came out
of the gates fast and took the game to Real Salt Lake immediately. Directly from the kickoff KC was
attacking and almost found net as Michael Harrington played a great cross in to Omar Bravo who
headed wide of the goal.
For the second year in a row the MLS All Stars fell to Manchester United in the mid-season all star
game. Again it wasn't much of a game as United won 4-0, bringing the aggregate score to 9-2 over
the two years. But honestly in the end it was a team that had practiced with each other a grand
total of two times before the game going up against a team that has been consistently playing
together, many of them for years.
Matt Besler and Omar Bravo will at least be on the bench next Wednesday when the MLS All Stars take
on Manchester United. Today, MLS All Stars coach, Hans Backe announced the 22 man game day roster.
Both Besler and Bravo are on the roster. Four players selected to the "First XI" are not on the
roster due to injury or upcoming CONCACAF Champions' League games.
With one of my precious days off today from my job that pays the bills, I made my way to Swope for
Sporting KC's practice today and the press conference with Peter Vermes and Soony Saad. The one
thing that was most surprising about practice today was that it was more laid back than I thought
it was.
Today MLS announced the Starting XI for this year's All Star game against Manchester United on July
27th in New York. The Starting XI was dominated by New York and LA players. But there will be at
least one Sporting KC player in New York for the game. Sporting KC defender, Matt Besler has been
selected to the All Star team as the winner of of the AT&T Text Voting Winner.
Major League Soccer announced it's All-Star First XI on Sunday, and no Colorado Rapids made the
cut.
A 12th All-Star, the winner of the AT&T Text Voting, was revealed on Sunday on
MLSsoccer.com.
On July 27, at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., the MLS All-Stars will face the defending
English Premier League champions Manchester United in the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game (live on
ESPN2, Galavision, and TSN at 6:30 p.
Due to being out of town I'm a day late, but here are some stats for you.
Matt Besler made his 50th league start for KC. He's the 35th player to hit that mark for KC.
Kei Kamara made the 150th appearance of his MLS career in all competitions.
Graham Zusi made his 50th appearance for KC in all competitions, he's the 47th player to hit that
land mark.
I have to say that I was probably a little more optimistic about this game after seeing the
pounding SKC gave FC Dallas. But, I was also a little worried that Vermes was going to go back to
his beloved 4-3-3 formation that hasn't worked well. But, when I saw that Omar Bravo was going to
replace Stojcev (who was suspended) I was again excited.
Here are your stats for Monday.
Luke Sassano scored his first ever MLS goal.
Aurelien Collin's goal was his first MLS league goal.
Milos Stojcev's red card was KC's 5th of the season, they had only 4 all of last year.
Matt Besler made his 50th league appearance for KC, he's the 38th player to hit that mark for KC.
The new MLS All Star game rules state that teams can now only have 6 players up for selection in
the fan vote for the All Star game. Today the list of candidates was released, including the
Sporting KC 6 players. The KC players are Davy Arnaud, Omar Bravo, Matt Besler, Teal Bunbury, Roger
Espinoza, and Kei Kamara.
Michael Harrington made his 123rd league appearance, tying him with Chris Brown for 12th on that
list.
Harrington also made his 123rd start in all competitions, tying him with Jose Burciaga for 13th on
that list.
He also started his 111th league game, breaking his tie with Burciaga for 12th place on that list.
Well in my prediction on Friday night I said that this game looked like it would be a dull, drab
0-0 or 1-0 result, and it turned out to be exactly that. After Toronto's 6-2 loss last week I
expected them to sit a little deeper and play a similar game plan to the one KC did in Seattle
after losing 4-1 to LA.
Another away game, another 3 goals given up, and another red card. These are things that are
becoming way to common when talking about the Wizards games. The only difference with this game
from the previous is the fact Sporting KC played solid for most of the game. For the first time I
don't feel like SKC beat themselves in this game.
Here are the stats from yesterday's game.
Aurelien Collin was the 150th player to appear in a competitive game for Sporting KC.
Collin picked up the third red card of the season for KC, they picked up 4 in all of last
season.
Kei Kamara's first goal tonight broken his tie with Igor Simutenkov, Miklos Molnar, and Chris
Henderson for 17th on that list.
The weather might not have been the best for a game, but it would be hard to blame the poor play
from both teams solely on that. The Crew showed why they have only scored 4 goals the entire
season. And the Wizards showed why they have given up more goals than any other team.
Formation
Vermes decided after the embarrassment in Vancouver that he would go with the exact same line up
for this game.
A 10 game road trip is not an ideal way to start a season! But, the Wizards scheduled this on
their own. They knew they would have to travel to some hostile environments and need to get
points pick up points in order to avoid falling too far back in the standings. After picking up 3
points against Chivas and almost stealing a point against Chicago while playing down a man I
expected a positive result from the trip to Vancouver.
Matt talks about the Chicago game, getting his first goal, a message from Conrad, Roger Espinoza as
a center back and a bit more...Matt Besler scored his first professional goal against Chicago and
proved he could take the cold with short sleeves. Of course he did not have much choice, his long
sleeve jersey somehow remained in Kansas City.
Here's your stats for this week.
Matt Besler's goal was his first professional goal.
Besler's goal was also the 50th scored by KC against the Fire in all competitions.
Roger Espinoza started his 50th game in all competitions for KC, he's the 38th player to hit that
mark for KC.
A first half red card to Wizards designated player, Omar Bravo put Sporting KC behind early and
they were never able to recover even though they outplayed the Chicago Fire for a good portion of
the second half. Before the game even started things didn't seem to be good for KC, as with Shavar
Thomas on national team duty, and Julio Cesar having a knock, Roger Espinoza partnered Matt Besler
in the center of defense for KC.
It looked like an absolutely amazing time today out by the Kansas City Repertory Theatre as Kei
Kamara's want to have a snowball fight was realized. A decent crowd turned out for the event and
plenty of photos were taken. Afterward the group hit up Kamara's favorite restaurant, Chipotle,
which had offered to give some free lunches.
It started with a (probably not too serious)tweet and ended with Sporting Kansas City players and
fans playing in the snow. A snowball fight, snow soccer and even some sledding...Enjoy the slide
show. For the full galleryThanks to the Cauldron (especially Sean Dane and Jeff Szajnuk) for
getting this organized, the Kansas City Repertory Theatre (for letting us use their park), Sporting
