The pieces are in place for it to be the weekend of the landmark appearance for Americans across
Europe.
After Tim Ream was named to Bolton's matchday roster and Charlie Davies was named to Sochaux's,
West Ham announced that centerback George John will be part of the 20-man traveling party for the
club's match at Peterborough United on Saturday.
Charlie Davies's road to recovery finally appears that it's getting closer to the end as the
striker has been selected into the matchday 18 for Saturday's game at Stade Rennes.
The big freeze produced one big winner. Germany's winter so far: a mild
December was followed by a warm January was followed by a frigging cold February. It's probably
some strange global warming phenomenon again, or 2012, or... It meant that matchday 20 took place
under arctic circumstances.
Two goals from Didier Drogba and a fine free kick from Yaya Toure gave Ivory Coast a comfortable
3-0 win over Co-host Equatorial Guinea to send the Elephants through to the Semi final where they
will face either Gabon or Mali.
In the day's earlier match Zambia beat 10 man Sudan with a scoreline to make it through to the
semis for the first time since 1996.
Marco Reus finds all the right answers to Bayern's trash talk. Reus'
announcement to move to Dortmund in the summer, triggered a series of trademark taunts from down
south during the winter break. Reus supposedly demanded a guaranteed starting spot at Bayern. He
chickened from trying to fight for his place in the team.

For U.S. Under-23 winger Joe Gyau, the future is now.
Gyau confirmed on his own Twitter feed that he will be in TSG 1899 Hoffenheim's matchday 18
against Hannover 96 this weekend for the first time. Hoffenheim is dealing with a number of
injuries, and Gyau, who has been playing well for the club's U-23 team, is going to get his first
taste of first-team life in the Bundesliga in what could prove to be a seminal year in the
19-year-old winger's career.
A bit too melodramatic? No, this is Arsenal!
Can we get back in the game?
Everyone loves a good comeback story. Americans, in particular, are completely fixated upon this
trope. Rocky Balboa, the Major League series (back when Charlie Sheen was a serious actor.
WINNING!), among many others played this story to its full effect, culminating in the 1993
mega-hit, The Sandlot, where puny little white kids (and one tall, dark, handsome
pseudo-Hispanic) showed that yeah, they could play baseball too!
Three notes from the second day of training in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
- The workload increased in the morning session, with the team on the field for about 90
minutes.
- The coaching staff transitioned into exercises involving more players (6 v. 6, 8 v. 8) to build
on the concepts they have introduced and give the team a picture of what it will look like in a
game.
Going into the Champions League group stages, there were likely a great deal of football bets
placed on Premier League powerhouses Manchester United and Manchester City reaching the round of
16. But after flubbing a group that appeared to be a relative stroll, United are now looking ahead
to the Europa League, and their archrivals are doing the same.

Finally a Champions League Knockout stages draw that spelt relief for Lyon. In their 9th
consecutive appearance in the Round-of-16, they meet APOEL FC; the Cypriot side that managed to
finish ahead of Zenit St.
Mario Gomez (left) is the top scorer in the Bundesliga this season
FC Bayern München secured the tag of Herbstmeister (autumn champions) in Germany last
night. Despite going down to ten men following Franck Ribéry's red card on the half hour mark, FC
Bayern were seldom troubled by visiting 1.
- Dempsey faces a fight to stay in the Europa League. Fulham must get a result at home over
Odense.
As the final matchday of the Europa League group stages approaches Wednesday and Thursday, so
does the best chance to see Americans in action overseas on a TV near you. And with some of the
Americans' teams in danger of crashing out of Europa, it may be the last chance for a while.
Milan started off their Champions League campaign in truly inspirational form after stealing a
point away to Barcelona on the opening match day. Their next two games ended according to
expectation, with routine victories over BATE Borisov and Viktoria Plzen. However, following their
2-0 win over BATE Borisov on matchday three, the Rossoneri failed [.
- Next time, rake the cleats, Rooney my boy.
And as Matchday 6 of the Champions League separated the wheat from the chaff, the next eight
into the Europa League knockouts are:
Valencia
Olympiakos
Porto
Victoria
Plzen
Manchester United
Manchester City
Lyon FC Basel
Trabzonspor
Manchester United failed to beat Basel, so MUFC goes to Europa while the Swiss progress to the
knockouts.
Olympiakos 3 (Djebbour 16, Fuster 36, Modesto 89) Arsenal 1 (Benayoun 57)
(Champions League Group Stage)
It seems the knives are out again. Described as Euro flops in some quarters, and a laughing
stock in others, it seems many of the press are finally able to pull the trigger on the negative
stories they've been unable to run over the past month, thanks to our improved form.
Dinamo Zagreb vs. Olympique Lyonnais
Matchday 6, UEFA Champions League Group Stages 2011/12.
The equation is simple really. Make mincemeat out of Dinamo Zagreb in Zagreb, and bribe Madrid
to make fruit punch out of Ajax in Amsterdam. Seven strikers, one defender (Lovren, of course) and
three goalkeepers ought to be enough, one would think?

AVB held his pre match press conference yesterday and was keen to point out that Chelsea will not
be sitting back to try and keep a clean sheet to progress to the knockout stages tonight but will
be going all out to win the game which is good to hear.
He said:
People have seen us play enough now to be sure we always take the initiative in games,
We know that Valencia want to get something because a goal for them makes the game even more
difficult for us, but we won't change our strategy just because it is an important game
We will take the initiative and we don't play counter attack or use the long balls.
It comes down to tomorrow. One night, everything on the line. For Villas Boas, maybe his job.
For the rest of us, our sanity. More, after the jump:
The Moment
By now everyone is well aware of the script. Chelsea need a resounding victory or a bore-draw
tomorrow to ensure safe passage into the knockout phase of the Champions League.
At the 2010 Nike International Friendlies, the U.S. Under-17 MNT took on Korea Republic, Brazil and

Brazil and Turkey opened the competition last year, with both teams earning a point in the
scoreless tie.
We haven't been shy about how much we appreciate the community around here there's a healthy
balance of the thoughtful and the ridiculous, and the frequent discussions that occur throughout
the week glean some of the more enjoyable Liverpool-focused reading to be found. So in a detour
from the normal posting, we're taking a break to celebrate some of the week's better efforts;
limiting it to ten does a disservice to the myriad of quality (and sometimes lengthy) contributions
we get on a regular basis, but here's a sampling of what we got this week.

FC Barcelona defeated AC Milan 3-2 in an entertaining encounter at the San Siro on Wednesday to

Yesterday's 2-1 loss at Napoli has left Manchester City in a very precarious position in their
Champions League group. Citizens now have to defeat Bayern Munich in the final matchday and hope
Napoli somehow draw or lose at Villareal. The same Villareal that have a whopping zero (0) points
from five..

Tonight Arsenal face a giant of a test when German club Borusssia Dortmund visit them at the
Emirates in a winner takes all Group F Champions League clash. Any slip up tonight from either
Arsenal, Marseille or Dortmund could effectively end their hopes of moving on to the knockout
stage.
Arsenal lead Group F on 8 points and Wenger will be hoping that his star striker Robin Van
Persie will carry on from Saturday and ensure the Gunners qualify with a game to spare.
It was bound to happen sooner or later. Man City's amazing unbeaten run finally ended last night
after they suffered 2-1 away defeat to Serie A club SS Napoli. The loss now means City will have to
beat Bayern Munich at home in the final group game and hope that Villarreal who are yet to pick up
a point in the tournament can spring a surprise and beat the Italian club.
Bayer are looking to turn Group E on its end tomorrow night in Leverkusen. Current Bayer
midfielder and former Chelsea boy Michael Ballack, for visual aid, demonstrates the effect the home
side is seeking to have in the splashy photograph below.

Real Madrid entered the fifth matchday of UEFA Champions League already having qualified for the
knockout rounds, so a more subdued performance from the Spanish giants wouldn't have been a
complete surprise. That's not quite what happened, though,.
From the arrival of the teams to Landon Donovan's title winning goal to the post-match
celebrations, this is Major League Soccer's entertaining six minute capsule (or what MLS calls

As attention shifts to matchday 5 of the Champions League today, many will be waiting with bated
breath for what could very well be the Match of the season. Italian giants AC Milan host defending
Champions Barcelona at the San Siro tomorrow.
The first leg of this fixture ended in a 2-2 draw at the Nou Camp and Milan know that they can't
take any chances with the champs this time round.

The U.S. men's national team's quest to qualify for the 2014 World Cup will begin at home.
CONCACAF released the schedule for the third round of World Cup qualifying, and the United
States will open its campaign in Group A with a home game against Antigua & Barbuda on June 8,
2012.
While Serie A takes its third break two months into a delayed season, teams in Serie B are double
yoked, with a full set of fixtures on matchday 15 and the league's bright young stars fleeing to
Istanbul for a hit on the international hookah pipe. Fifty-two sides are battling it out for a mere
seven spots in the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship in Israel.
There has been lots of talk about the goal glut that is happening in the Premier League right
now. Are pricey strikers to blame or is it the death of quality defense? Decision Technology's
Ian Graham has already taken a look at debunking the Guardian's piece on the "goal glut". I
thought I'd add my two cents.
Premier League Weekend Review: Easy games for Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd & Liverpool - originally

The big clubs of England play the minnows this weekend with odds largely in favor of the giants
formerly known as the 'top 4′. Here's a look at the betting situation heading into the Matchday
11 of the English Premier League.
Arsenal will receive WBA's visit in what will be the Premier League's 11th matchday of the season.
With the teams fast approaching midseason things are now settling in and the table is starting to
take a more reasonable appearance so it is a lot easier to predict winners of football matches than
betting at a [.
The UEFA Champions League resumes tomorrow night as the fourth matchday of the group stage gets
underway, and there are several teams that could clinch a place in the round of 16 if results go
their way this week. It should be no surprise that the top three teams in Champions League
statistics in regards to goals scored are all in that bunch, in Barcelona (9), Real Madrid (8), and
Chelsea (8).
It's around the fourth matchday of the UEFA Champions League that things start to really take
shape atop group tables and those with ground to make up feel the pressure even more as their
European hopes start to tick away. That's where plenty of teams stand entering Tuesday's critical
matches.
