I know the decade technically isn't over for another year. Don't care. As far as I'm concerned, and
for our purposes here, the decade is from 2000-2009.
And since we had such fun with the ‘compare the squads' vote a few weeks back, I thought another
poll or nine would be entertaining. Plus, it's easy content!

So another weekend has passed with another story linking Javier Mascherano with a move to
Barcelona.
It was good to read in the ECHO yesterday that Liverpool quickly dismissed the speculation, as he
is an important player.
But the time has now come for Argentina's captain to back up the faith many have shown in him with
a string of top displays for the Reds at this most crucial period.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has admitted to making errors in the transfer market but suggested he
had to take risks because of the precarious financial situation at Anfield.
With the club struggling in the Premier League and their Champions League participation hanging by
a thread, Benitez defiantly defended the job he has done at the club, and claimed when all of his
players returned from injury, fans would see the best of them.

Some uplifting news for the Liverpudlians. Stevie G is ready to rock n' roll against City this
weekend. Will Liverpool join the list of clubs that have stuck it to City?
Personally, I think Liverpool played well against Birmingham - they faltered familiarly on set
pieces but overall they were a number of positives.

Rumours of the potential transfer of Javier Mascherano from Liverpool to Barcelona during the
winter transfer window are understood to be without any concrete foundation, according to Spanish
publication Sport.
Speculation surrounding the Argentina captain has continued throughout the season after he was
strongly linked with a summer move to Camp Nou and recent reports suggested that the players
representatives had reached an agreement on the personal terms of a winter move.

Liverpool are not expecting any fresh interest from Barcelona in Javier Mascherano in January.
Weekend reports suggested the midfielder's advisers had already negotiated personal terms with the
Catalans in advance of a transfer fee being agreed with the Reds.
However, there has been no contact between the clubs since the summer when Barca were informed
Mascherano was not for sale.

After trying his best to engineer a move away from Anfield in the summer, rumours are flying again
that Javier Mascherano is on the verge of leaving Liverpool. So where's the problem? Why can't
Liverpool just let him leave? There seems to be this idea that Mascherano is somehow irreplaceable
and integral to Liverpool's success, but in my view, Liverpool could cope perfectly well without
him.

Javier Mascherano is set to leave Liverpool after his advisers agreed on personal terms with
Barcelona to line up a move in January or the summer, according to a report.
The Argentinian midfielder is desperate to complete a switch to Camp Nou and now knows he can
expect to earn around €120,000-a-week should he join the European champions, the Sunday Express
states.

What does former Red, Craig Johnson think he is on about? He is quoted in The Star as saying: "Has
he lost the dressing room? Six defeats in eight games would say that he has."The former Liverpool
fancy-dan has got that one wrong, big time.Despite our poor run of form, the players have not lost
faith in Rafa Benitez, as anyone who has seen Liverpool's performances will tell you that they have
given 100% commitment in every game.

Why didn't Alberto Aquilani play any part of the Lyon game? Can someone please explain to me the
logic behind keeping him on the bench for the full 90 minutes because I just don't get it.
Aquilani was on the bench against Lyon therefore he must be fit. He was even warming up at one
stage.

Pantomime season is almost upon us, but the contradictory stories over the future of Robinho
continue apace.
There have been a series of reports in today's press with regard to his future, and with many
seemingly different angles taken.
AS reported Joan Laporta as indicating the club would back the management at Barcelona should
Robinho be a target for them:
"We are not going to close any door or end any plan because, although the squad is
competitive, as was shown against Mallorca, if the coaches want to strengthen in the winter market
and they recommend a player to us, I am sure we can make a move.

When David N'Gog scored so early on, the game opened itself perfectly for Liverpool: this was the
ideal starting point, the launching pad that could lead to a much needed win. Then came the
inevitable defensive lapse that resulted in a conceeded goal which was followed up by the sucker
punch of Cameron Jerome's splendid but somewhat fortiuitous goal and suddenly it was a repeat of so
many games this season.

Instead, Tom suggests David Ngog will partner Dirk Kuyt upfront.
Steven Gerrard may be on the bench, that would be welcome news for the Reds.

No matter what happens from now until the end of the season, and whether we finish in the top 4 or
not, there are a number of recent transfer deals that bother me greatly - signings, sales or missed
opportunities that could've improved our squad and afforded us more depth than we currently
have.
The deals relevant to last season may even have turned some of those nagging draws in wins, maybe
giving us enough points to have snatched the title from Man Ure.

This season in a nutshell, except it's the first draw in 17 games. Ecstasy and optimism followed by
a kick in the teeth. A brilliant Babel opener off the bench, but a sloppy Lopez equalizer in the
90th after Liverpool couldn't completely clear late pressure, ending with a Bastos flick-on to
Lisandro, who out-muscled Kyrgiakos to beat Reina.

Tonight Rafa Benitez is on the managerial tightrope when his side faces Lyon in the Champions
League. Liverpool have to win, if Fiorentina and Lyon win then Liverpool can say goodbye to major
silverware this season and Benitez can probably say goodbye to his job.
Benitez's side is decimated by injuries and an awful lot of responsibility is on the shoulders
of Fernando Torres tonight if he plays.

persistent groin problem, and that roaming right-back Johnson is sidelined due to a calf injury.

Seems like there should be a bit of a grace period after Sunday's 2-0 victory over United, but I
suppose that's the beautiful, and sometimes maddening, part of football. Fernando Torres admitted
what we already knew about his fitness, Glen Johnson was likely less than 100%, and the side in
general could use time to soak in the most important victory of the young season.

Before Sunday's game between Liverpool and Manchester United, Liverpool were supposedly in
crisis. While their manager Rafa Benitez has got some relief from the enormous pressure on him, the
questions regarding the team's dependence on Gerrard and Torres will come up again in the future.
Liverpool fully deserved their victory and this does not reflect well on the quality of the United
team.

Lucas Leiva had a great game against Man Utd on Sunday.
I have been his biggest critic since he first joined Liverpool a couple of seasons ago.
But I have to say he was very good yesterday in central midfield alongside Mascherano.
He tackled like a man possessed, winning virtually every challenge he went into.

In the midst of the Alonso summer saga, I posted the results from different midfield pairings.
Lucas/Mascherano's line looked like this:
6 wins, 4 draws
2-0 West Brom, 3-0 West Ham, 4-1 United, 1-1 City, 1-1 Wigan, 0-0 Stoke, 5-1 Newcastle, 3-1 PSV
[4-4-2], 0-0 Fulham [4-4-2], 2-1 Marseille
Let's ignore the PSV and Fulham games because of the 4-4-2 formation in Gerrard's absence (and
Torres' against PSV).
