"I'd rather be at Michel Telo's next concert than sit here answering your questions. By the way,
what colour does my hair look like under the light?" - Brazil's Marta at the FIFA Ballon d'Or
earlier last month!

Que triste! It isn't a good week for fans of the US Women's Professional Soccer (WPS)
league. The board announced it would be "suspending play" this year due to complex legal issues
involving a former club owner. This matters because some of the world's best female players ply
their trade there including Abby Wambach, Marta, Alex Morgan and
Hope Solo.
U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage, forward Abby Wambach and goalkeeper Hope Solo have arrived in
training camp after attending the annual FIFA Awards Gala in Zurich, Switzerland on Monday
night.
Sundhage finished second in the voting for FIFA Women's World Cup of the Year and Wambach finished
third in the voting for FIFA Women's World Player of the Year behind Marta of Brazil and winner
Homare Sawa.
Sawa potentially begins her Ballon d'Or reign as Messi continues his own, picking up his third
in as many years.
If history is anything to go by, expect 2011 Women's World Cup winner Homare Sawa to be
collecting her second Ballon d'Or prize this time next year. Marta had won five years running as
the top female player in the world, but no more.

Japanese World Cup winner Homare Sawa beat out a strong field that included Brazilian Marta and
Abby Wambach to win the FIFA Women's World Player of the year 2011.
Marta who was looking to win the award for a 6th consecutive time had to contend with a second
place finish while Abby Wambach of the USA came in in third place.
Having faced uncertainty about its future in recent weeks and months, WPS appears to have
avoided doomsday. At least for now.
WPS reportedly received conditional Division 1 sanctioning for 2012 from U.S. Soccer's board of
directors on Monday evening despite it only having five teams and the minimum for Division I status
typically being eight.
U.S. U-17 WNT captain Morgan AndrewsAs 2011 comes to a close, 2012 will be a big year for the USA's youth women's national teams as
both the Under-17s and Under-20s prepare for regional qualifying for their respective FIFA Women's
World Cups, which will be held toward the end of the year after the Olympics.
Will this be the year that Marta will be dethroned as FIFA's women's world player of the year?
The Brazilian striker has won the award for the past five years and was among the 10 players
nominated for the 2011 award.
The United States has three players on the list all of whom played for the WNT at last
summer's Women's World Cup in Germany.

Union
Danny Mwanga is back and healthy for the playoffs. Nice timing, Danny!
The Shin Guardian gives the Union 7 to 1 odds at winning the MLS Cup. That puts the Union as
the 4th most likely team to win, behind Seattle, LA and Real Salt Lake.

After a year in which the United States women's national team reached the World Cup final, Abby
Wambach, Hope Solo and Alex Morgan were rewarded by being named are among the 10 finalists for the
FIFA Women's World Player of the Year award.
FELIZ MARTES! The shortlist for the Women's FIFA Ballon d'Or has been
announced and surprise, surprise, three of the names drawn are from the US national team.
The winners, Japan, also have two possible winners in the list, as do France. Abby
Wambach (seen above with a fan), Hope Solo and Aya
Miyama are a few of the key names but all these talented futbolitas are all
winners in their own right.
*Rolling Hills Estates' Whitney Engen was named today to the Women's Professional Soccer Best
XI, along with former LA Sol star Marta.
Engen is a defender for the Western New York Flash, which won the league title last weekend. She
was also earlier named WPS Defender of the Year.
Hermosa Beach resident Abby Wambach was also named to the WPS team.
Brazilian football legend, Marta, was in Sierra Leone in the last two days to
promote women's empowerment. The UNDP Goodwill Ambassador met with university students,
footballers, advocates and students. Marta also told them the story of how she overcame a difficult
childhood to become the best female football player in the world.
The final of Women's Professional Soccer between the Philadelphia Independence and the Western New
York Flash ended in a 1-1 draw, forcing a dramatic shootout in Rochester, NY. Former Portland Pilot
Christine Sinclair of Canada put Western New York ahead in the 67th minute, and the Flash seemed to
be in control of the match with Brazilian Marta, the undisputed best player in the world,

The Philadelphia Indpendence is back in the WPS Final for the second time in only their second
year of existence. After dropping last year's final 4-0 to FC Gold Pride, this year's motto has
been "unfinished business".

Women's soccer leads the way this week on the KYW Philly Soccer Show when KYW's Greg
Orlandini is joined by Philly Soccer Page writer Eli Pearlman-Storch and PSP‘s Philadelphia
Independence beat writer Mike Servedio.
The Independence heads to Rochester, NY to face the Western New York Flash for the WPS crown on
Saturday, August 27 (4pm, CSN).
Union
So, no Union game on Sunday because of Hurricane Irene. What's a Philly soccer fan supposed to
do? Support the Independence in Saturday's WPS Championship Final (CSN, 4pm), that's what.
Looking at the title of Kerith Gabriel's excellent piece in today's Daily News, "Union's youth
has not been served," it would be easy to expect a rant about how some deserving young players on
the Union roster are not getting enough playing time.
Palos Verdes Estates' Christen Press (magicJack) was named Rookie of the Year, while Rolling
Hills Estates Whitney Engen (Western New York Flash) received the Defender of the Year honor in
Women's Professional Soccer.
Engen, 24, led the regular season champions to a 13-2-2 record and missed just one game (while
on national team duty) all season; Press, the reigning 2010 MAC Hermann trophy winner out of
Stanford, scored eight goals for magicJack - almost one-third of the team's total - and just two
behind former LA Sol striker Marta, who took the Golden Boot Award despite playing in just 14
games.
On Saturday, July 22nd, in the Atlanta Beat's first home game since the end of the World Cup the
fans came out in full support with a sold out KSU Soccer Stadium. The official attendance was
announced at 9,345. The Beat were looking to break their 12 game winless streak against a
magicJack team that was coming off short rest after taking on Western New York Flash three days
prior.

Did you buy a ticket for the Independence match against Atlanta on Sunday after seeing some of
the Women's World Cup? Or are you just making it down to Widener University for the first time?
Here's what you've missed so far during Philadelphia's 2011 campaign:
Early season unevenness.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. The Boston Breakers welcomed back all eight of their World Cup competitors last
night and one of them Kelly O'Hara stepped up with a two-goal effort in a 2-2 draw against the
Western New York Flash before a record crowd of 6,222 at Harvard Stadium.
O'Hara scored in the 20th and 84th minutes, while the Flash countered with goals in the 38th and
87th minutes from World Cup stars Marta and Alex Morgan, respectively.
It is always sad when a World Cup ends. No more matches at all hours of the day, no more
constant media coverage, no more excitement with new heros daily emerging from obscurity. This
year's 2011 Women's World Cup was as entertaining an affair as we have seen from this (or any other
tournament) in quite some time.

This week's cover of France Football is a first for the squad - the headline "On Vous Aime!" has a
lovely double resonance. It means "We love you!" and it's used by football fans - I have a

By Dr. Raf Crowley Yesterday, Neil W. Blackmon took our readers back through the emotional gauntlet
that all true US Soccer fans experienced during the latest heart-stopping track meet, thriller of a
match late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon. As a US Soccer fan for many years, I was
emotionally at a loss for [.
Abby Wambach and Hope SoloOK, you've won me over United States Women's National Team (#USWNT as we
say in the Twitterverse). I got sucked into that game yesterday and I enjoyed it; why is this
starting to sound like some kind of Alcoholics Anonymous initiation rite?
I admit I was late, forgive me, but I did catch up quickly after halftime.
Rare is the soccer event involving a U.S. team that our sports nation is yakking about – but
that I am not writing about. So it is with the Women's World Cup, which I am watching as an
interested observer, but not necessarily as a journalist.
It's a strange place. So many casual fans know as much or more about Pia Sundhage and Co.
Thoughts on the USA win over Brazil;
Never say never. This game will go down in Woman's World Cup history as one of the all time
greats. The U.S. women won their quarterfinal match in unbelievable fashion Sunday, overcoming bad
referee decisions, being down a woman, and being down a goal with literally seconds remaining
before beating Brazil on penalty kicks (5-3) to advance to the semifinals.
It's tough to sift through 122-plus minutes of a match filled with so much action, excitement
and intrigue and distill it down to a few details. But here are the five major events from
today's match that shaped the outcome of the game.
-Brazil's Early Miscue
The United States jumped out to an early lead thanks to a flub by Brazil just 74 seconds into
the game.

I feel sorry for anyone that missed the US/Brazil World Cup match yesterday. It is one of the
best games I have ever watched personally. It had everything- drama, questionable reffing (is that
really a surprise when FIFA is involved?), tension, excitement, action, and a historic finish. It
is even being replayed tonight on ESPN2 at 11:00 PM CST.
Poetic Justice. After a grueling and dramatic race against Brazil, referees, and time, the USA
Women's National Team made unforgettable history. If you missed the match and your a sports fan in
even the smallest measure, then you missed the essence of sport. You better watch the replay, for
this will forever be one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the game.
By Neil W. Blackmon Let's just get the disclaimer right out of the way, shall we? What follows
won't do today justice. I would hope that's obvious. Some moments in life are too sensory, too "I

U.S. captain Christie Rampone leads the victory charge
One word: Wow.

winning in penalty kicks againts Brazil in the quaterfinal of the Women's World Cup which just
happens to be in a sold-out stadium in Dresden where the U.
There was no more margin for error in today's WWC quarterfinal game between the US and Brazil.
The team that lost goes home, while the winning team books a ticket to the semifinals on
Wednesday. Twitter and Facebook blew up as the match progressed and more and more fans logged on
to see what was happening.
It was a roller coaster of a match in Dresden, Germany on Sunday July 10, 2011, when the United
States and Brazil met in the quarterfinals of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.
It was an own goal, put into the net by Daiane, that gave the United States an early lead:
Then in controversial confluence of events, Rachel Buehler picked up a red card in the 65th minute,
but after Hope Solo stopped a penalty kick taken by Cristiane, but, after an encroachment call, the
penalty was retaken, and converted, by Marta:
The match stayed tied at 1-1 as regulation came to end.
